A numerical assessment of the free energy function for fractional-order relaxation

2014

In this paper a novel method based on complex eigenanalysis in the state variables domain is proposed to uncouple the set of rational order fractional differential equations governing the dynamics of multi-degree-of-freedom system. The traditional complex eigenanalysis is appropriately modified to be applicable to the coupled fractional differential equations. This is done by expanding the dimension of the problem and solving the system in the state variable domain. Examples of applications are given pertaining to multi-degree-of-freedom systems under both deterministic and stochastic loads.

Mini-drones swarms and their potential in conflict situations

2021

Drones are currently used for a wide range of operations, such as border surveillance, general surveillance, reconnaissance, transport, aerial photography, traffic control, earth observation, communications, broadcasting, and armed attacks. This paper examines the swarming and associated abilities to overwhelm a combatant as well as bring extra functionality by means of extra sensors spread throughout the swarm. The strategy of stealth is becoming increasingly less effective. Combatants can not only sense them, but can also successfully destroy them (although this cannot be said for nano-drones). For mini-drones, objectives can be enhanced by the strategy of overwhelming. peerReviewed

Bridging scales with thermodynamics: from nano to macro

2014

We have recently developed a method to calculate thermodynamic properties of macroscopic systems by extrapolating properties of systems of molecular dimensions. Appropriate scaling laws for small systems were derived using the method for small systems thermodynamics of Hill, considering surface and nook energies in small systems of varying sizes. Given certain conditions, Hill's method provides the same systematic basis for small systems as conventional thermodynamics does for large systems. We show how the method can be used to compute thermodynamic data for the macroscopic limit from knowledge of fluctuations in the small system. The rapid and precise method offers an alternative to curre…

Site-selectivity control in hetero-Diels-Alder reactions of methylidene derivatives of lawsone through modification of the reactive carbonyl group: a…

2019

A new perspective on the reactivity of hydroxyquinones was revealed as an acetal derivative of lawsone was synthesized, isolated, and used in tandem Knoevenagel/hetero-Diels-Alder reactions catalyzed by S-proline. The intermediate alkylidene-1,3-diones that were formed in situ reacted with electron rich alkenes to predominantly afford pyrano-1,2-naphthoquinone (β-lapachone) derivatives along with the isomeric pyrano-1,4-naphthoquinone (α-lapachone) derivatives in high to excellent total yields. Interestingly, the highly reactive arylidene-1,3-dione derivatives were found to be stable and isolable. DFT calculations suggest that these hetero-Diels-Alder reactions have a high polar character, …

The discovery and preservation of the Great Inscription of Gortyna in Crete by Italian researchers in the late nineteenth century. and the first decades of the twentieth century. was an important cultural and scientific recognition for the young Italian nation. In the past the island of Crete had been tied to the Republic of Venice and this report also favored sending in Crete the young epigraphist F. Halbherr who among considerable vicissitudes came to together to the epigraphist german E. Fabricius the inclusion of the famous ancient city of Gortyna. The inscription among the oldest and most comprehensive so far known throughout Europe the rules contained on the family's legacy in general and the rights and duties of some of the people of the Minoan civilization (480-450 BC). The inscription was carved on blocks organic limestone a restored ancient building which later in Roman times was turned into odeon. The Laws of Gortyn were engraved on the remains of the wall forming the passageway in front of the steps of the odeon. The essay traces the events that led to the discovery and subsequent storage made by Halbherr especially with the help of archaeologist L. Pernier and finally with the help of architect E. Stefani who designed a modern cover on the top of the ambulatory of the segments containing the inscription. This coverage was made to perform during the First World War on the basis of the Italian project from the Greek Government in order to protect the membership from possible war damage but especially from vandalism. The roof brick clay of the Laws of Gortyna still serves its function and ensures the use of the monument bearing witness to the preservation of Italian culture in Greece and more generally in the world. But in Sicily in the remains of the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina (Enna) its elegant protection (built in 1957) is representative of a whole period of culture of the Italian restoration is removed and replaced because it has not been able to make a ongoing maintenance is due. A bad example of conservation and management of a UNESCO monument from which arise after the work for the construction of new roofs an equally insulting to the archaeological heritage and scenic Italian and world.Settore ICAR/19 - Restauro

Voluntary CSR vs. mandatory CSR : the sound of employees

2016

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) laws are an area of exploration and there is debate over preference to voluntary CSR laws or to mandatory CSR laws. The objective is to con-duct a micro-level study to explore the employee’s preferences for mandatory CSR laws or voluntary CSR laws. There is some existing literature on this topic at the macro-level and goal is to extend and contribute to the literature about this topic by studying the pref-erence at the micro-level. A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews was conducted with 15 employees in India and Finland. The study contributes by identifying two different kinds of typologies of employees based on their experiences with…

Jesu oppstandelse og naturlovene

2012

Author's version of an article published in the journal: Norsk filosofisk tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/nft/2012/04/jesu_oppstandelse_og_naturlovene In this article, I defend the possibility of understanding the resurrection of Jesus as an event within the framework of natural laws. In this way, the resurrection is not necessarily contrary to Natural Science or belief in the existence of Natural laws. I offer, at the same time, a critique of one of David Hume's arguments against the belief in miracles. - I denne artikkelen forsøker jeg å åpne opp for den mulighet at Jesu oppstandelse ikke vil innebære et brudd med verken naturlover eller vitenskape…

“Piero Sraffa: economic reality, the economist and economic theory. An interpretation”.

2007

We carry out a textual analysis of Sraffa's main published contributions to pure economics in order to elaborate a rational reconstruction of an aspect of Sraffa's implicit methodology which has not yet been duly investigated. We refer to the threefold relationship between ‘economic reality’, ‘the economist/observer’ and ‘economic theory’. We elucidate the constraints which, for Sraffa, should bind the economists' arbitrariness and we trace the elements of continuity and evolution from the 1925–6 critique of Marshallian economics to Production of Commodities.

Method and analysis in Piero Sraffa's 1925 critique of Marshallian economics

2000

This paper provides an analysis of the logical structure and analytical content of Piero Sraffa's 1925 Italian paper, ‘Sulle relazioni fra costo e quantita prodotta’. It shows that Sraffa's criticism of the supply side of Marshall's theory of value in a competitive partial equilibrium model involves analytical and methodological issues. Endorsing an agressive methodology Sraffa logically reconstructs Marshall's model on variable returns to determine its empirical domain. He demonstrates that the latter encompasses only the empirically irrelevant cases of specific factor industries and specific external economies industries and that it cannot be generalized to non-specific factor industries …

''Forward to the past''

2012

Carlini, Alessandro | Actis-Grosso, Rossana | Stucchi, Natale | Pozzo, Thierry; International audience; ''Our daily experience shows that the CNS is a highly efficient machine to predict the effect of actions into the future; are we so efficient also in reconstructing the past of an action? Previous studies demonstrated we are more effective in extrapolating the final position of a stimulus moving according to biological kinematic laws. Here we address the complementary question: are we more effective in extrapolating the starting position (SP) of a motion following a biological velocity profile? We presented a dot moving upward and corresponding to vertical arm movements that were masked i…
