Significance of passively induced stretch reflexes on achilles tendon force enhancement

1998

An in vivo buckle transducer technique was applied to study the reflex contribution to ATF enhancement during passive dorsiflexion stretches. Single stretches led to a linear ATF increase in the absence of an EMG reflex response, whereas clear ATF enhancement over the passive component occurred 13-15 ms after the onset of EMG responses. To quantify the reflexly induced increase in ATF, the stretched position was maintained. The mean reflex effect was two to four times greater than the passive stretch effect.

Abnormal pentagastrin response in a patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism

2002

The case of a 25 year old female patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism type I (PHP) and hypercalcitoninaemia is reported. She was referred to our clinic because of recurrent hypocalcaemia associated with paraesthesias and muscle cramps. She had no signs of Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO), a normal mental status and no family history of hypocalcaemia or any other endocrine disease. Considering the laboratory results with hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, normal vitamin D and normal creatinine with an extraordinary elevated PTH we diagnosed pseudohypoparathyroidism type I. She had delayed pubertal development with menarche in the age of 20 and hypothyroidism with an atrophic thyroid…

Postural equilibrium: functional system and its stabilization by means of osteoreflexotherapy.

1998

Our investigations have confirmed that the osteoreceptive sensory system participates in the polysensoric regulation of animal and human posture. Experiments with animals have demonstrated that the irritation of osteoreceptors by electric pulses leads to osteoreceptive response potentials of the same parts of the brain (Deiter's nuclei, cerebellum, caudate nucleus, cortical motor centre etc.) which participate in the regulation of animal and human posture and other motion acts. Close functional relations have been established between the skin, bone, vestibular and muscle sensory systems in the brain structures where the osteoreceptive excitation converges. The studies of osteoreceptive sens…

Patch testing with components of water-based metalworking fluids

2003

Water-based metalworking fluids (MWFs) may cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Several well-known MWF allergens are available for patch testing, but considering the wide variety of possible components used in MWF, our diagnostic arsenal covers only a small part of potential allergens. We therefore selected 13 frequently used MWF components that might be sensitizers and had not yet been tested routinely. In 5 centres, 233 dermatitis patients with present or past occupational exposure to MWF were patch tested with this and other panels. Only 7 patients showed positive reactions to the study panel. Allergic reactions to the emulsifier diglycolamine [syn. 2-(2-aminoethoxy) etha…

Age–sex differences in the global burden of lower respiratory infections and risk factors, 1990–2019: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study…

2022

Funding: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Background: The global burden of lower respiratory infections (LRIs) and corresponding risk factors in children older than 5 years and adults has not been studied as comprehensively as it has been in children younger than 5 years. We assessed the burden and trends of LRIs and risk factors across all age groups by sex, for 204 countries and territories.  Methods: In this analysis of data for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, we used clinician-diagnosed pneumonia or bronchiolitis as our case definition for LRIs. We included International Classification of Diseases 9th edition codes 079.6, 466–469, 470.0, 480–4…

Iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism after surgery for retrosternal goitre. A single centre retrospective analysis

2018

AIM: The aim of this study is to assess, retrospectively, the incidence of secondary hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy in patients with retrosternal goitre. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2009 to September 2015, 622 patients who undergone total thyroidectomy for goitre, were retrospectively observed. The patients were divided into two group: Group A, including 58 patients with retrosternal goitre and Group B, including 562 patients with in situ goitre. Those patients with diseases of the parathyroid glands, assumption of drugs modifying calcium metabolism and who received blood transfusions before or after surgery, were excluded from the study. In both groups, a total thyroid…

In-Vivo Estimation and Repeatability of Force-Length Relationship and Stiffness of the Human Achilles Tendon using Phase Contrast MRI

2008

Purpose To devise a method using velocity encoded phase contrast MRI and MR-compatible dynamometry, for in vivo estimation of elastic properties of the human Achilles tendon and to assess within-session and day-to-day repeatability of this technique. Materials and Methods Achilles tendon force and calcaneus-movement-adjusted displacement were measured during a submaximal isometric plantarflexion in 4 healthy subjects, four repeated trials each. The measured force-length (F-L) relationship was least-squares fitted to a cubic polynomial. Typical error was calculated for tendon displacement at multiple force levels, stiffness from the “linear region,” and transition point from the displacement…

Papillary thyroid cancer incidence in the volcanic area of Sicily.

2009

Abstract BACKGROUND: The steadily increasing incidence of thyroid cancer has been attributed mostly to more sensitive thyroid nodule screening. However, various environmental factors, such as those associated with volcanic areas, cannot be excluded as risk factors. We evaluated thyroid cancer incidence in Sicily, which has a homogenous population and a province (Catania) that includes the Mt Etna volcanic area. METHODS: In a register-based epidemiological survey, we collected all incident thyroid cancers in Sicily from January 1, 2002, through December 31, 2004. The age-standardized incidence rate for the world population (ASR(w)) was calculated and expressed as the number of thyroid cancer…
