Don Lorenzo II Gioeni committente e collezionista di opere d'arte
2019

The contribution is dedicated to one of the most recent acquisitions of the Giorgio Cini Foundation collection: the valuable corpus of works b…
2020
The collection of works in Trapanese coral exhibited at the XXXI International Biennial of Antiques in Florence demonstrates show such production was characterized by a consistently high cultural level and refined artistic knowledge. Whereas from the 16th Century onwards the main players in this trend were sovereigns, nobles and high prelates, between the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Century, antique dealers and wealthy private individuals became the main players, as they were attracted, like their predecessors, by the exquisite beauty of Trapanese coral artifacts, which still commands high prices in the art market. The article proposes a scientific study of the wor…

2021
This volume constitutes the second stage of a research project which, through a detailed study of the accounts of foreign travellers who arrived in Sicily between the 17th and 19th centuries, has identified descriptions of the Sicilian decorative arts seen during their itineraries. After having published the results of the research on the diaries of English travellers in the volume Beauty and Splendour - Le Arti Decorative siciliane nei diari dei viaggiatori inglesi tra XVIII e XIX secolo, the results of the scientific research on the diaries of French travellers are presented here.
IMMUNOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF CROHN'S DISEASE: A REGULATORY FUNCTION OF TIM-3/GALECTIN-9 IN LYTH1.
2017
Crohn's disease (CD) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and its etiology is multifactorial and involves a combination of genetic environmental factors. The interaction of these factors causes an imbalance of the microbiota, leading to the activation of several immunological and inflammatory mechanism. From an immunological point of view, there seems to be an involvement of the TIM-3/GALECTIN-9 pathway and of the autoregulation of lyTh1. These studies show that in patients with CD the autoregulation of lyth1 is lost due to a reduced concentration of galectin-9 and a reduced TIM-3 expression in LyTh1. This could be one of the reason for the state of perpetual activation of lyTh1, r…
Galectin-3 immunodetection for improving the performance of conventional thyroid cytology: preliminay results
2008
Introduction: Most of differentiated thyroid carcinomas should be easily revealed by fine-needle aspiration cytology but sometimes preoperative diagnosis is doubtful. Galactin-3 is a carbohydrate –binding protein with affinity for beta-galactosides that plays a significant role in cell-cell and cell matrix adhesion, growth, neoplastic transformation and metastasis. Moreover, galectin-3 immunodetection is related to follicular thyroid malignancies. Our aim is to test Galectin-3 as potential preoperative marker for follicular and papillary carcinomas. Methods: Expression of galectin -3 was tested by fluorescence staining on 40 fresh cytological thyroid samples obtained preoperatively; the sam…
Apical transport of osteopontin is independent of N-glycosylation and sialylation.
2002
Studies of how epithelial surface polarity into apical and basolateral domains is generated and maintained have proposed that carbohydrate modifications serve as apical targeting signals for proteins by interacting with lectin sorters. However, the experimental evidence in support of N-glycans, O-glycans and sialic acids mediating apical transport is still very controversial. This could be partly due to the fact that in most studies exogenously expressed proteins were analysed. One has, therefore, examined the role of carbohydrate moieties in apical targeting of the endogenous secretory protein osteopontin in MDCK cells. It was found, however, that sorting of osteopontin does not require N-…
