A new marker for sea surface temperature trend during the last centuries in temperate areas: Vermetid reef

2004

The presence of Vermetid reefs in temperate waters, their diffusion in the Mediterranean Sea, and the possibility of performing 14 C ages allowed the use of Vermetids as an indicator of sea level changes. We present new data on sea climate trend fluctuations that could be interpreted as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) variations, recorded on Vermetid (Dendropoma petraeum) reefs, by means of isotopic analysis. The isotopic records show positive values of the d 18 O relative to present-day values in the period between 1600 and 1850 AD; this deviation occurs in association with the climatic cooling event known as Little Ice Age (LIA). Subsequently, we can observe the warming trend that character…

Residents' attitude towards possible adaptation measures to the sea coast erosion in Latvia

2011

PurposeIn addition to climate changes, human activities in the sea coast area are also important in the context of coastal erosion. There is a need to consider possible measures of adaptation at a national level to solve this issue. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the findings of the interviews made by the author and come to conclusions about residents' attitude towards possible measures of adaptation to the coastal erosion in Latvia.Design/methodology/approachThe research was made by interviewing those seashore residents whose households are most influenced by sea coast erosion along the entire coastline of Latvia in the areas where erosion rate is projected to be at least 6 m unti…

Geographical Distribution of Unemployment: An Analysis of Provincial Differences in Italy

2007

Unemployment rates appear to vary widely at a subregional (e.g., local or provincial) level. Using spatial econometric models for spatial autocorrelation, this paper focuses attention on the spatial structure of regional unemployment disparities of Italian provinces. On the basis of findings from the economic literature and of the available socio-economic data, various model specifications including different explanatory variables are tested to investigate the geographical distribution of unemployment in the 103 provinces of Italy for the years 1998 and 2003. The results suggest that there is a clear explanation of unemployment differentials in terms of spatial equilibrium and disequilibriu…

Bulk stable nitrogen isotope values of the carbonate-bound organic matrix in bivalve shells (δ15NCBOM) are increasingly used to assess past food web dynamics, track anthropogenic nitrogen pollution and reconstruct hydrographic changes. However, it remains unresolved if the δ15NCBOM values are also affected by directed ontogenetic trends which can bias ecological and environmental interpretations. This very aspect is tested here with modern and fossil specimens of the long-lived ocean quahog, Arctica islandica, collected from different sites and water depths in the NE Atlantic Ocean. As demonstrated, δ15NCBOM values from the long chronologies show a general decrease through lifetime by −0.00…

Validation of a very simple model for computing global solar radiation in the European, African, Asian and North American areas

1990

Abstract In a previous paper Coppolino has proposed a very simple model for predicting the monthly mean daily global solar radiation G (MJm −2 day −1 ) at any Italian location using as input only the sunshine duration s (hours) and the noon altitude of the sun on the 15th of the month h n (degrees). The correlation suggested is G = 7.8 s 0.5 (sin h n ) 1.15 . Herein the validity of this model is verified by extending its application to dat from 24 stations displaced at various latitudes, altitudes above sea level and geographical situations in the European, African, Asian and North American areas. Furthermore the validity of this model to fit the data of the tested stations is compared with…

A well-oxygenated cells environment may help to fight against protein glycation

2010

Normoglycemic Wistar rats' Glycated Hemoglobin Levels (GHL) showed a time-dependent difference between control groups and those exposed to regular inhalation of peroxidizing extracts of turpentine. These extracts were able to optimize the oxygen permeation at the cellular level during and subsequently to a breathing session. The more the rats breathed turpentine peroxidized vapor, the lower their GHL was. This study was designed to confirm, in ex-vivo blood samples, the impact of peroxidizing extract on the GHL.Red blood cells were separated from plasmas by centrifugation. Plasmas were treated by peroxidizing and non-peroxidizing turpentine vapor or untreated (control), then combined with w…

The role of governance in realising the transition towards sustainable societies

2016

It is widely known that governance is central to the successful implementation of sustainable development policies and measures. Yet, there is a paucity of research which explore the links between governance and sustainability. This paper attempts to address this research need by providing an analysis of the role of governance in enabling - and to some extent - fostering a transition towards sustainable societies. A set of indicators for assessing the capacity for and willingness and commitment to transition to a more sustainable society is presented, enabling identification of direction of change. This paper presents the results of a study, in the context of which sustainability governance…

Sports Cars, Sleaze and Gamma Rays: Rhineland-Palatinate Elects its First Red-Green Government

2012

The 2011 election in Rhineland-Palatinate was a political earthquake: Following a string of political scandals, the SPD lost almost ten percentage points of their support, while the CDU could hardly improve on their disastrous 2006 result. The FDP is no longer represented in the state parliament. The Greens more than tripled their last result, allowing them to enter a coalition with the SPD for the first time. Analyses at the municipal level show that the party improved most in their urban strongholds while still showing a (relatively) weak performance in rural areas. This will make it difficult to sustain the momentum of their victory. Moreover, the SPD is battered and bruised and needs to…

Polymorphism in the immunoglobulin-like domains of the receptor tyrosine kinase from the sponge Geodia cydonium.

1996

Sponges [Porifera] are the phylogenetically oldest phylum of the Metazoa. They are provided with both cellular and humoral allorecognition systems. The underlying molecules are not yet known. To study allorecognition in sponges we first determined the frequency of graft rejection in a natural population of the marine sponge Geodia cydonium. We then determined, for the first time at the molecular level, the degree of sequence polymorphism in segments of one molecule which may be related to sponge allorecognition and host defense: the Ig-like domains from the receptor tyrosine kinase [RTK]. Thirty six pairs of auto- and allografts were assayed, either by parabiotic attachment or insertion of …
