Influences on Master’s Degree Students’ Economic Knowledge

2020

Despite the growing body of research, little is known about students’ economic knowledge at the beginning of, or at various points throughout, their master’s degree programs. In this study different impact factors on students’ microeconomic knowledge are tested. Based on the “utilization of learning opportunities model” by Helmke we focus on 1) individual and sociodemographic characteristics of the students, 2) their learning potential and study-related characteristics and 3) the characteristics and structure of their learning environment. For each of the three influencing factors we used different indicators that were expected to correlate with students’ knowledge. We tested the assumption…

Managing asymmetry in franchise contracts: transparency as the overriding rule

2012

PurposeThe aim of this article is to provide solutions to protect the weaker party in management and distribution contracts, especially in the field of franchising.Design/methodology/ approachThe paper is based on a review of literature, legislation and practices concerning management and franchise contracts. The regulation of this field at a national level consists of laws that are both private and mandatory in nature. Certain questions are raised concerning the obligatory nature of regulations when applied to the management of international franchise contracts.FindingsThis article studies the question of whether the imperative application of laws to international contract management is ap…

Short-term occupations at high elevation during the Middle Paleolithic at Kalavan 2 (Republic of Armenia).

2021

The Armenian highlands encompasses rugged and environmentally diverse landscapes and is characterized by a mosaic of distinct ecological niches and large temperature gradients. Strong seasonal fluctuations in resource availability along topographic gradients likely prompted Pleistocene hominin groups to adapt by adjusting their mobility strategies. However, the role that elevated landscapes played in hunter-gatherer settlement systems during the Late Pleistocene (Middle Palaeolithic [MP]) remains poorly understood. At 1640 m above sea level, the MP site of Kalavan 2 (Armenia) is ideally positioned for testing hypotheses involving elevation-dependent seasonal mobility and subsistence strateg…

Growth vs. level effect of population change on economic development: An inspection into human-capital-related mechanisms

2011

ACL-1; International audience; This paper studies the different mechanisms and the dynamics through which demography is channeled to the economy. We analyze the role of demographic changes in the economic development process by studying the transitional and the long-run impact of both the rate of population growth and the initial population size on the levels of per capita human capital and income. We do that in an enlarged Lucas–Uzawa model with intergenerational altruism. In contrast to the existing theoretical literature, the long-run level effects of demographic changes, i.e. their impact on the levels of the variables along the balanced growth path, are deeply characterized in addition…

Recent developments, current challenges, and future directions in electrophysiological approaches to studying intelligence

2021

Abstract EEG studies represent an important sub-discipline in the field of intelligence research and have significant potential to advance the theoretical understanding and practical applications of the construct. This commentary reviews key themes and major developments in the field from the last several decades, and outlines open questions and future directions for the next phase of research. Two main areas of progress in recent years relate to (1) improvements in study design and psychometric approaches, and (2) increased integration with cognitive psychology and neuroscience. In turn, these advances have clarified several themes and pressing issues. These include: The need to establish …

FinTech in Latvia: Status Quo, Current Developments, and Challenges Ahead

2021

FinTech has been in the focus of discussion for quite some time. However, the market share of FinTech companies is still relatively small compared to that of more traditional financial services. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the status quo, current developments, and challenges ahead for the Latvian FinTech sector. We combine three analyses: a political and legal, economic, social, and technological environment (PEST) analysis

Utilizing games in the co-production of mental health services

2020

This study analyses the application of a co-production approach in utilizing digital games and game-related methods in mental health services. The goal is to offer a real-world experiment on co-production, focusing on mental health service users, active gamers and mental health practitioners who worked together in equal ways and valued each other’s unique contributions during the experiment. The implications of a co-production approach for applying digital games in the field of mental healthcare are somewhat limited and under-explored. In this case study, seven workshop sessions were held involving service users, gamers and professionals. Participants were interviewed concerning their exper…

Explicit Algorithms for a New Time Dependent Model Based on Level Set Motion for Nonlinear Deblurring and Noise Removal

2000

In this paper we formulate a time dependent model to approximate the solution to the nonlinear total variation optimization problem for deblurring and noise removal introduced by Rudin and Osher [ Total variation based image restoration with free local constraints, in Proceedings IEEE Internat. Conf. Imag. Proc., IEEE Press, Piscataway, NJ, (1994), pp. 31--35] and Rudin, Osher, and Fatemi [ Phys. D, 60 (1992), pp. 259--268], respectively. Our model is based on level set motion whose steady state is quickly reached by means of an explicit procedure based on Roe's scheme [ J. Comput. Phys., 43 (1981), pp. 357--372], used in fluid dynamics. We show numerical evidence of the speed of resolution…

Image boundaries detection: from thresholding to implicit curve evolution

2014

The development of high dimensional large-scale imaging devices increases the need of fast, robust and accurate image segmentation methods. Due to its intrinsic advantages such as the ability to extract complex boundaries, while handling topological changes automatically, the level set method (LSM) has been widely used in boundaries detection. Nevertheless, their computational complexity limits their use for real time systems. Furthermore, most of the LSMs share the limit of leading very often to a local minimum, while the effectiveness of many computer vision applications depends on the whole image boundaries. In this paper, using the image thresholding and the implicit curve evolution fra…
