Plio-Quaternary coastal landscape evolution of north-western Sicily (Italy)
2023
We present and discuss the results of a geomorphological and geological study aimed at reconstructing the Plio-Quaternary evolution of the NW Sicily coastal belt, a low strain rate region in the central Mediterranean Sea. We performed morphometric and field analysis of Quaternary marine terraces extracting more than 300 shoreline location points subdivided into six orders. The obtained dataset was validate by investigating the morphological changes along topographic profiles and comparing the extracted locations and elevations with the stratigraphic boundaries in the Plio-Quaternary units. We distinguished two contiguous coastal sectors characterized by different paleo-shoreline elevations …
When and how do hospital nurses cope with daily stressors? A multilevel study
2020
BackgroundDuring their workday, nurses face a variety of stressors that are dealt with using different coping strategies. One criticism of the contextual models of work stress is that they fail to focus on individual responses like coping with stress. Neverthless, little is know about the momentary determinants of coping in nurses.ObjectivesTo identify the momentary predictors of problem-focused approaching coping and emotion-focused approaching coping, as well as those for seeking social support and refusal coping strategies, during the working day in nurses.DesignThis study uses descriptive, correlational, two-level design with repeated measures.SettingsWards of two University hospitals.P…
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Different Testing Strategies that Use Antibody Levels to Detect Chronic Hepatitis C in Blood Donors.
2016
Aim. We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of seven hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing strategies in blood donors. Methods. Three of the seven strategies were based on HCV diagnosis and reporting guidelines in Mexico and four were from previous and current recommendations outlined by the CDC. The strategies that were evaluated determine antibody levels according to the signal-to-cut-off (S/CO) ratio and use reflex Immunoblot (IMB) or HCV RNA tests to confirm true positive (TP) cases of chronic HCV infection. Costs were calculated from the perspective of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). A decision tree model was developed to estimate the expected number of true positive cas…
High-precision mass measurements and production of neutron-deficient isotopes using heavy-ion beams at IGISOL
2019
An upgraded ion-guide system for the production of neutron-deficient isotopes with heavy-ion beams has been commissioned at the IGISOL facility with an $^{36}\mathrm{Ar}$ beam on a $^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Ni}$ target. It was used together with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap to measure the masses of $^{82}\mathrm{Zr}, ^{84}\mathrm{Nb}, ^{86}\mathrm{Mo}, ^{88}\mathrm{Tc}$, and $^{89}\mathrm{Ru}$ ground states and the isomeric state $^{88}\mathrm{Tc}^{m}$. Of these, $^{89}\mathrm{Ru}$ and $^{88}\mathrm{Tc}^{m}$ were measured for the first time. The precision of measurements of $^{82}\mathrm{Zr}, ^{84}\mathrm{Nb}$, and $^{88}\mathrm{Tc}$ was significantly improved. The literature value for $^…
On a topology optimization problem governed by two-dimensional Helmholtz equation
2015
The paper deals with a class of shape/topology optimization problems governed by the Helmholtz equation in 2D. To guarantee the existence of minimizers, the relaxation is necessary. Two numerical methods for solving such problems are proposed and theoretically justified: a direct discretization of the relaxed formulation and a level set parametrization of shapes by means of radial basis functions. Numerical experiments are given. peerReviewed
Interpretation of absorption edges by resonant electronic spectroscopy: experiment and theory
2004
Abstract Resonant electronic spectroscopy consists in measuring a non-radiative decay process (Auger or autoionization process) excited with photon energies around an absorption edge. The resonant spectra carry information both on the nature of the electronic transitions near the absorption edge by scanning the very first empty orbitals above the Fermi level (through the absorption process), and, on the other hand, on the atomic electronic configuration through the lineshape of the observed decay process. In this paper, after a quick review of the pioneering works in this field, we show that resonant measurements and their theoretical modeling can be used to precisely interpret complex abso…
Chalcogen adsorption and surface magnetism
2000
Abstract Investigations concerning the electronic and magnetic properties of oxygen and sulfur adsorbed on magnetized surfaces were carried out by means of angle and spin resolving photoelectron spectroscopy. Iron(110), a polycrystalline iron alloy, and an amorphous metallic glass (Fe 79 B 16 Si 5 ) served as ferromagnetic substrates. Exchange splittings of the O 2p and S 3p derived levels could be detected, demonstrating a magnetic coupling between the chemisorbate and iron. This observation presents a prerequisite for an induced magnetic moment within the adsorbate overlayer. For sulfur an adsorbate-induced structure only in the minority spin channel near the Fermi level was observed whic…
Contributions to the study of educational returns
2016
In Tunisia, enrollment rates in tertiary education had soared up over the past two decades. A significant increase of student annual flows imposed the implementation of reforms that led to an increase in the number of higher education institutions and universities. One of the challenges in Tunisia and many African countries is to improve the efficiency of education systems to promote employability and graduates employment. This thesis discuss the question of the efficiency of education from an economic approach based on returns to education in the labor market. The first chapter analyses private returns to education particularly higher education in African countries. Our findings highlight …
