Infection of brown trout with Diphyllobothrium dendriticum procercoids.
1997
The aims of this experimental study were to develop a practical method of controlling the number of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum procercoids delivered to a fish host; to examine the effect of different procercoid doses (3, 7 and 15) on the plerocercoid level in fish; and to examine the potential mortality caused by plerocercoids. The experiment was terminated after 2 months. The prevalence of infection at the lowest dose level, 17.2%, was statistically significantly lower than at medium and high levels, 63.3% and 56.7%, respectively. The mean intensity increased slightly along with the dosage. The contribution of D. dendriticum to the death of a few fish could not be proved. It is concluded…
Analytical chemistry on many-center chiral compounds based on vibrational circular dichroism: Absolute configuration assignments and determination of…
2019
The absolute configuration of a chiral molecule is key to its biological activity. Being able to find out what this configuration is, is thus crucial for a wide range of applications. The difficulties associated with such a determination steeply rise as the number of chiral centers in a given compound becomes larger. Concurrently, it becomes increasingly more challenging to determine the levels and identity of potential stereochemical contaminants in a given sample with one and the same technique, leading in practice to extensive and laborious efforts employing multiple analytical techniques. Here, experimental and theoretical studies based on Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) are presen…
Security, QoS and self-management within an end-to-end Cloud Computing environment
2015
Today, Cloud Networking is one of the recent research areas within the Cloud Computing research communities. The main challenges of Cloud Networking concern Quality of Service (QoS) and security guarantee as well as its management in conformance with a corresponding Service Level Agreement (SLA). In this thesis, we propose a framework for resource allocation according to an end-to-end SLA established between a Cloud Service User (CSU) and several Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) within a Cloud Networking environment (Inter-Cloud Broker and Federation architectures). We focus on NaaS and IaaS Cloud services. Then, we propose the self-establishing of several kinds of SLAs and the self-managemen…
Mobilities in Finland's Information Society Strategies from 1995 to 2010
2012
Abstract The article explores Finland’s national information society strategies and uses the Finnish case as an example to identify the limitation of the so-called ‘methodological nationalism’ and to explicate the advantages of the mobility paradigm. The research material consists of the Finnish national strategies published between 1995 and 2010. The article identifies two trends from the studied strategies; a further intermingling of physical movement of objects and virtual mobility, and a tendency to reduce corporeal mobility. The study also shows that most mobility-related challenges require international cooperation and multinational solutions, although state-centred thinking was preva…
A Viscosity Equation for Minimizers of a Class of Very Degenerate Elliptic Functionals
2013
We consider the functional $$J(v) = \int_\varOmega\bigl[f\bigl(|\nabla v|\bigr) - v\bigr] dx, $$ where Ω is a bounded domain and f:[0,+∞)→ℝ is a convex function vanishing for s∈[0,σ], with σ>0. We prove that a minimizer u of J satisfies an equation of the form $$\min\bigl(F\bigl(\nabla u, D^2 u\bigr), |\nabla u|-\sigma\bigr)=0 $$ in the viscosity sense.
Approach to mathematics in textbooks at tertiary level – exploring authors’ views about their texts
2012
The aim of this article is to present and discuss some results from an inquiry into mathematics textbooks authors’ visions about their texts and approaches they choose when new concepts are introduced. Authors’ responses are discussed in relation to results about students’ difficulties with approaching calculus reported by previous research. A questionnaire has been designed and sent to seven authors of the most used calculus textbooks in Norway and four authors have responded. The responses show that the authors mainly view teaching in terms of transmission so they focus mainly on getting the mathematical content correct and ‘clear’. The dominant view is that the textbook is intended to he…
Knowledge and Beliefs About Developmental Dyslexia: A Comparison Between Pre-Service and In-Service Peruvian Teachers
2017
The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge, misconceptions, and knowledge gaps of Peruvian pre-service teachers (PSTs) and in-service teachers (ISTs). To do so, 112 PSTs and 113 ISTs completed the Knowledge and Beliefs About Developmental Dyslexia Scale (KBDDS). Results show that ISTs scored significantly higher than PSTs. Moreover, misconceptions and lack of information were higher in PSTs. The most noteworthy misconceptions were that dyslexia is due to poor visual perception and that letter or word reversals are the most important criterion in the identification of dyslexia. Age, years of teaching experience, prior exposure to a child with dyslexia, and self-efficacy were …
Panel Summary: Plasticity and Reconfigurability in Sensory Systems
1997
Natural neural network are highly plastic in structure and function and may adapt to long lasting environmental changes. Plasticity and adaptation are not confined to lower level of processing, or to lower vertebrates, but also at the higher levels of visual processing in higher vertebrates are highly dynamic and perform considerable spatial integration. There are numerous influences that play a role in the functional architecture of the retina and the, cortex, the dynamics of the outside environment, the context within which a feature is presented, the history of previous visual stimulation and attention or expectation. The brief report on the visual system is integrated by the report of G…
Dynamic Packet Bundling for VoIP Transmission Over Rel'7 HSUPA with 10ms TTI Length
2007
In this paper, the system level optimization of the voice over IP transmission in the HSUPA system, configured with a 10 ms TTI length, is analyzed. The study considers the release 7 improvements to HSUPA, in terms of the DPCCH gating concept. A dynamic activated MAC layer bundling of two VoIP packets in a single frame is proposed and compared against the single packet per frame transmission by means of quasi-static system level simulations.
Beyond GDP: an analysis of the socio-economic diversity of European regions
2019
International audience; This paper aims to analyze the socioeconomic diversity of the European Union (EU-28) regions from a dynamic perspective. For that purpose, we combine a series of exploratory space-time analysis approaches to multiple Factor Analysis (MFA) applied to a large range of indicators collected at the NUTS-2 level for the period 2000–2015 for the EU-28. First, we find that the first factor of MFA, interpreted as economic development (ECO-DEV), is spatially clustered and that a moderate convergence process is at work between European regions from 2000 to 2015. Second, when comparing these results with those obtained for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, we show that th…
