Ammonoid morphological signal versus sea-level changes

1997

The morphological diversity, considered as a biological signal, of a series of four Upper Callovian (Middle Jurassic) ammonite populations of Côte-d’Or (France) is quantified. These populations fall within two third-order sequences of a second-order transgression. A sampling method that adheres as closely as possible to the morphological characteristics of the populations is established. It is valuable in that it eliminates the subjectivity related to taxonomy to allow more objective comparisons between the biological signal (shell morphology) and the physical signal (eustasy).

Comparison of the functional responses of invasive and native amphipods

2008

While we can usually understand the impacts of invasive species on recipient communities, invasion biology lacks methodologies that are potentially more predictive. Such tools should ideally be straightforward and widely applicable. Here, we explore an approach that compares the functional responses (FRs) of invader and native amphipod crustaceans. Dikerogammarus villosus is a Ponto-Caspian amphipod currently invading Europe and poised to invade North America. Compared with other amphipods that it actively replaces in freshwaters, D. villosus exhibited significantly greater predation, consuming significantly more prey with a higher type II FR. This corroborates the known dramatic field imp…

Gradient-echo and CRAZED imaging for minute detection of Alzheimer plaques in an APPV717I x ADAM10-dn mouse model.

2007

Different strategies to visualize amyloid plaques with MRI at 17.6 Tesla were investigated in a novel mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Large iron-containing plaques were observed in the thalamus, but cortical plaques did not show iron deposits. Plaques in the thalamus were visualized in vivo with the use of low-resolution, 3D gradient-echo (GRE) imaging in 82 s, and with 94-microm resolution in 34 min. The feasibility of obtaining bright contrast from plaques using the COSY revamped with asymmetric z-GRE detection (CRAZED) technique was investigated in experiments on fixed brains. The original CRAZED approach provided reduced signal near the plaques (similarly to GRE imaging) and ad…

Effects of environmental and occupational lead toxicity and its association with iron metabolism

2021

Abstract Background Discrepancies are present in the findings from clinical trials evaluating a physiological role of iron status in the lead-exposed population. Objective The purpose of this article was to summarize the current understanding of cellular mechanisms of lead toxicity and present a comprehensive review of existing clinical trials related to associations of lead poisoning and iron status. Although an association of iron metabolism pathways that are affected by lead intoxication has been studied, there are still aspects that remain to be elucidated. The existence of additional Pb uptake pathways besides DMT1 transporter-mediated is postulated to non-specifically regulate lead ab…

Ultracold Rare-Earth Magnetic Atoms with an Electric Dipole Moment

2018

We propose a new method to produce an electric and magnetic dipolar gas of ultracold dysprosium atoms. The pair of nearly degenerate energy levels of opposite parity, at 17513.33 cm$^{-1}$ with electronic angular momentum $J=10$, and at 17514.50 cm$^{-1}$ with $J=9$, can be mixed with an external electric field, thus inducing an electric dipole moment in the laboratory frame. For field amplitudes relevant to current-day experiments, we predict a magnetic dipole moment up to 13 Bohr magnetons, and an electric dipole moment up to 0.22 Debye, which is similar to the values obtained for alkali-metal diatomics. When a magnetic field is present, we show that the electric dipole moment is strongly…

Der Einfluß von extremen Ausdauerbelastungen auf den Eiweißstoffwechsel des Menschen mit besonderer Berücksichtigung des Immunsystems

1985

In summer 1981, six long-distance runners covered a 1100-km-course across the Federal Republic of Germany within 20 days. Four of them were on a more or less ovo-lacto-vegetable and two a vegetarian diet. In spite of a high absolute but indeed low relative protein supply, a continuous decrease of the total protein content could be noticed in the serum. The alterations of the protein fractions corresponded to those of an acute-phase reaction. The Immunoglobulin-G and the Immunoglobulin-A content decreased continuously. The cortisol level was always above the norm, the insulin level always below. The glucagon level increased continuously in the course of the day. The urea-N-level moved around…

The Antioxidant Potential of White Wines Relies on the Chemistry of Sulfur-Containing Compounds: An Optimized DPPH Assay

2019

The DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay is an easy and efficient method commonly used to determine the antioxidant capacity of many food matrices and beverages. In contrast with red wines, white wines are poorer in antioxidant polyphenolics, and the more hydrophilic sulfur-containing compounds in them may contribute significantly to their antioxidant capacity. The modification of the classical DPPH method, with a methanol-buffer and the measure of EC20 (quantity of sample needed to decrease the initial DPPH concentration by 20%) has shown that sulfur-containing compounds such as cysteine (0.037 &plusmn

Anxiety level and decision-making among Norwegian top-class soccer referees

2013

The purpose of this study was to examine the level of anxiety experienced by Norwegian top-class soccer referees while officiating, and to predict the level of anxiety according to refereeing level and perceived refereeing competence. Also investigated were referees' perceptions of how crowd noise and disturbance from players and/or coaches, failure (i.e. mistakes) in refereeing, and aggressive behaviour by players and/or coaches influence their decision-making when officiating. A total of 83 (response rate: 84.7%) referees (73 men and 10 women) aged 20–46 years (mean = 33.2 years) completed our questionnaire using SurveyXact, a web-based program for conducting electronic questionnaires. Anxiety and athletic performance of finnish athletes: Application of the zone of optimal functioning model

1995

Abstract The aim of this study was to test five hypotheses based on Hanin's [in Spielberger, C. D. & Diaz-Guerrero, R. (Eds), Cross-cultural anxiety (Vol. 2, pp. 45–64), 1986] Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning (IZOF) model. Eighty Finnish athletes filled out the State Anxiety Inventory two weeks, one week and one hour before the start of a competition. The predicted anxiety level measured two weeks and one week before the competition correlated significantly with the state anxiety level measured one hour before the start. Comparison of athletes preparing for a very important competition showed that those who were inside their optimal individual zone performed significantly better than…

The Spanish economic Miracle: a disaggregated approach to productivity growth, 1958-1975

2006
