Abstract 3α-Hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one (HPO) is a progesterone metabolite which exhibits narcotic properties at high concentrations by interactions with the receptor for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The present investigation characterized low-dose effects of HPO on GABA A receptor binding, by determining the allosteric properties of HPO on the in vitro binding of 3 H-muscimol to membrane fractions from the cerebella of ovariectomized rats. A newly developed method for tissue preparation was used to wash out endogenous ligands interfering with the assay. Multi-objective optimization of nitinol stent design.

Nitinol stents continuously experience loadings due to pulsatile pressure, thus a given stent design should possess an adequate fatigue strength and, at the same time, it should guarantee a sufficient vessel scaffolding. A PC-based wattmeter for high accuracy power measurements

This paper proposes the use of a commercial data acquisition board (DAQ) connected to a common personal computer for high accuracy power measurements. In the paper the set up of the PC-based wattmeter is described and an experimental evaluation of its metrological performances is made by means of the comparison with a simultaneous coherent digital sampling wattmeter realized with two high-precision DMMs Hewlett Packard Model 3458 A. In both cases the power source is a Fluke 6100A/E electrical power standard. © 2010 IEEE.

Power Consumption Analysis of Operating Systems for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper four wireless sensor network operating systems are compared in terms of power consumption. The analysis takes into account the most common operating systems-TinyOS v1.0, TinyOS v2.0, Mantis and Contiki-running on Tmote Sky and MICAz devices. With the objective of ensuring a fair evaluation, a benchmark composed of four applications has been developed, covering the most typical tasks that a Wireless Sensor Network performs. Technogenic Magnetic Particles in Alkaline Dusts from Power and Cement Plants

During this study, we investigated the mineralogical characterization of technogenic magnetic particles (TMPs) contained in alkaline industrial dust and fly ash emitted by coal burning power plants and cement plants. The reaction of tested dust samples varied between values of pH 8 and pH 12. The influence of 50 Hz sinusoidal magnetic field on physico-chemical properties of water was studied. Tanks with distilled water (120 mL) were individually exposed to action of homogenous 50 Hz magnetic fields, using a Helmholtz coils system. For magnetically exposure have been used different values of magnetic flux density (between 1 and 5 mT) and different durations of exposure (between 5 and 240 minutes). Metagenomics Reveals Planktonic Bacterial Community Shifts across a Natural CO2 Gradient in the Mediterranean Sea

ABSTRACT Bacterial communities at a CO 2 vent (pH 6.7) were compared with those at control (pH 8.0) and transition sites (pH 7.6) using 16S rRNA metagenomics. Firmicutes and unclassified bacteria dominated across all sites, Proteobacteria , especially Gammaproteobacteria , declined, and Epsilonproteobacteria increased in the vent with an increase in Bacteroidetes at both the vent and transition sites.
