Spin crossover phenomena in Fe(ii) complexes

The behaviour of spin crossover compounds is among the most striking and fascinating shown by relatively simple molecular species. This review aims to draw attention to the various ways in which spin crossover phenomena are manifested in iron(II) complexes, to offer some rationalisation for these, and to highlight their possible applications. Typical examples have been selected along with more recent ones in order to give an overall view of the scope and development of the area. The article is structured to provide the basic material for those who wish to enter the field of spin crossover.

Influence of titanium-vanadium alloys on cell morphology: electron microscopy and ESCA studies

Titanium and its alloys provide optimum metallurgical properties for implants. The formation of an oxide layer favours compatibility with the adjacent hard and soft tissues. Research focuses on further optimizing the passive layer, particularly with respect to minimizing metal ion migration into the tissues. The present study concentrates on two alloys (Ti6A14V and Til.5A125V) coated with oxide layers generated by different techniques: thermal oxidation, anodic oxidation and sol-gel treatment. Precursor Polymers for the Carbon Coating of Au@ZnO Multipods for Application as Active Material in Lithium-Ion Batteries

The synthesis of statistical and block copolymers based on polyacrylonitrile, as a source for carbonaceous materials, and thiol-containing repeating units as inorganic nanoparticle anchoring groups is reported. These polymers are used to coat Au@ZnO multipod heteroparticles with polymer brushes. IR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy prove the successful binding of the polymer onto the inorganic nanostructures. Thermogravimetric analysis is applied to compare the binding ability of the block and statistical copolymers. Thermogravimetric behavior of black liquors and their organic constituents

The slow thermal degradation of various black liquors and their organic components (lignin, aliphatic carboxylic acids, extractives and polysaccharides) was investigated by thermogravimetry in the temperature range 25–700 °C under an inert nitrogen atmosphere and at a heating rate of 20 °C/min. Oven-dried samples of pine and birch black liquors from kraft and soda-anthraquinone pulping were tested. Similar tests with black liquor components were carried out both in the absence and in the presence of alkali. In all cases, the mass loss occurred primarily in the temperature range 250–500 °C. Combining in the melt physical and biological properties of poly(caprolactone) and chlorhexidine to obtain antimicrobial surgical monofilaments.

Bacterial infections on a sutured wound represent a critical problem, and the preparation of suture threads possessing antimicrobial properties is valuable. In this work, poly(caprolactone) (PCL) monofilaments were compounded at the concentration of 1, 2 and 4 % (w/w), respectively, to the antiseptic chlorhexidine diacetate (CHX). The incorporation was carried out in the melt by a single-step methodology, i.e. “online” approach. Mechanical tests revealed that the incorporation of CHX does not significantly change tensile properties of PCL fibres as the thermal profile adopted to prepare the compounded fibres does not compromise the antibacterial activity of CHX. Thermal and Light-Induced Spin Transition in [Fe(bpen)X2] (bpen = 1,6-Bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5-diazahexane, X = NCS-, NCSe-)

The thermal and light-induced spin transitions in [Fe(bpen)(NCS)2] and [Fe(bpen)(NCSe)2] have been investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and Mossbauer measurements. The HS → LS transition in [Fe(bpen)(NCS)2] is detected at temperatures below 120 K (T1/2 [when the fraction of high-spin species γHS = 0.5] = 68 K) with a residual HS fraction of 8% at 20 K. The transition is fairly abrupt and no hysteresis is observed, in contrast to earlier studies (ref. [8]). Electrosynthesis of Sn-Co nanowires in alumina membranes

A fabrication process of amorphous nanowires of Sn-Co alloys, based on electrodeposition into anodic alumina membranes, is described. It is shown that nanowires of tin-cobalt alloys with different compositions can be produced by varying electrodeposition time and concentration ratio of salts dissolved into the electrolytic bath. Importance of the chelating agent to produce amorphous Sn-Co alloys has also been addressed. Electrodepositions were carried out potentiostatically at -1 V versus Saturated Calomel Electrode and 60 degrees C for times ranging from 10 to 90 minutes; the atomic fraction of Co2+ in the aqueous electrolyte (Co2+/(Co2+ + Sn2+)) was varied from 0.33 to 0.67.
