Influence of laminated architectures of heterostructured CeO2-ZnO and Fe2O3-ZnO films on photodegradation performances

2020

Abstract The development of photocatalytically active films has gained a great attention in recent years. Herein, new heterostructured films associating ZnO and CeO2 or Fe2O3 and exhibiting various architectures were prepared by the solution precursor thermal spray (SPPS) process. The paper examines the effect of the films laminated architectures on the photodegradation performance. For CeO2-ZnO and Fe2O3-ZnO films, the photodegradation efficiency of the Orange II dye is 100% and 95% after 240 min UV light irradiation and after 360 min visible light irradiation, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the laminated structures was found to depend on the materials used to construct the h…

Heterogeneous Photocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis: From Unselective Abatement of Noxious Species to Selective Production of High-Value Chemicals

2015

Heterogeneous photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis have been considered as oxidation technologies to abate unselectively noxious species. This article focuses instead on the utilization of these methods for selective syntheses of organic molecules. Some promising reactions have been reported in the presence of various TiO2 samples and the important role played by the amorphous phase has been discussed. The low solubility of most of the organic compounds in water limits the utilization of photocatalysis. Dimethyl carbonate has been proposed as an alternative green organic solvent. The recovery of the products by coupling photocatalysis with pervaporation membrane technology seems to be a…

Photodegradation of selected phthalates on mural painting surfaces under UV light irradiation

2014

Abstract The esters of phthalic acid are considered as hazardous pollutants due to their mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and are also classified as endocrine disruptor chemicals. Several compounds of this class of substances for decades, and probably even now, were used as softeners in water-based synthetic paintings. Surfaces and structures, such as house walls painted with phthalates based paintings, can be a concern to construction workers engaged in demolition, restore and paint removal activities if they are not protected from hazardous dust inhalation. In this paper we report the results of an investigation about phthalate ester degradation by direct UV irradiation at 254 nm. The result…

Novel silicon microparticles to improve sunlight stability of raw polypropylene

2015

Oxidation of polyolefins by ultraviolet/visible irradiation is a significant limitation for their use in several technological applications. The use of high-tech additives such as silicon microparticles becomes a compositing strategy that can improve the performance of these materials at long-term service conditions. Silicon particles were added to non-additivated raw polypropylene (PP) prepared by hot melt extrusion and subjected to accelerated sunlight irradiation tests. The stability of thermal properties, mechanical performance and thermal decomposition behaviour of composites was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and thermogravimetry. T…

[FeIILSCoIIILS]2⇔ [FeIIILSCoIIHS]2 photoinduced conversion in a cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic molecular square

2010

The self-assembly of [Fe(III){B(pz)(4)}(CN)(3)](-) and [Co(II)(bik)(2)(S)(2)](2+) affords the diamagnetic cyanide-bridged [Fe(II)(LS)Co(III)(LS)](2) molecular square which is converted into the corresponding magnetic [Fe(III)(LS)Co(II)(HS)](2) species under light irradiation at relatively low temperatures.

Light-Activated Sensitive Probes for Amine Detection

2017

Our new, simple, and accurate colorimetric method is based on diarylethenes (DAEs) for the rapid detection of a wide range of primary and secondary amines. The probes consist of aldehyde- or ketone-substituted diarylethenes, which undergo an amine-induced decoloration reaction, selectively to give the ring-closed isomer. Thus, these probes can be activated at the desired moment by light irradiation, with a sensitivity that allows the detection of amines at concentrations as low as 10exp−6 M in solution. In addition, the practical immobilization of DAEs on paper makes it possible to detect biogenic amines, such as cadaverine, in the gas phase above a threshold of 12 ppbv within 30 seconds. P…

Elastic Properties of Liquid Crystal Elastomer Balloons

2001

We introduce a method to measure elastic properties of smectic liquid crystalline elastomers. Freely suspended smectic polymer films containing photoreactive groups are inflated to spherical bubbles and crosslinked by UV light irradiation. After crosslinking, the balloon volume is varied and elastic properties of the material are determined from the relation between radius and inner excess pressure. The influence of the network topology on the elastic behaviour is discussed.

Effect of N-substitution in multinuclear complexes allows interplay between magnetic states and multistability investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy

2006

A series of pentadentate ligands N-X-5LH2 (X=H, Methyl, Benzyl)=N-X-saldptn (4-X-N,N′-bis(l-hydroxy-2-benzylidene)-1,7-diamino-4-azaheptane) has been prepared by a Schiff base condensation between 1,7-diamino-4-X-azaheptane and salicylaldehyde. Complexation with Fe(III) yields a series of high-spin (S=5/2) complexes of [FeIII(N-X-5L)Cl]. Such precursors were combined with [Mo(CN)8]4− and a series of blue nonanuclear cluster compounds [MoIV(CN)FeIII(N-X-5L)8]Cl4 resulted. Such star-shaped nonanuclear compounds are high-spin systems at room temperature. On cooling to 10K some of the iron(III) centers switched to the low-spin state as proven by Mossbauer spectra, i.e. multiple electronic trans…
