3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) is the most common chemical contaminant of the group of chloropropanols. It can occur in foods and food ingredients at low levels as a result of processing, migration from packaging materials during storage and domestic cooking. Abstract In this work, a simple device for extraction glutathione (GSH) in biological fluids using a hybrid monolithic material within a polypropylene syringe is developed. For this purpose, glycidyl methacrylate-based monolith was firstly prepared within this housing material, and the polymer was modified with different ligands (ammonia, cysteamine and cystamine). The resulting materials (containing amine or thiol groups, respectively) were then functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Extraction of β-blockers from urine with a polymeric monolith modified with 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride in spin column format

Abstract A glycidyl methacrylate-based monolith was modified with imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL) to be used as stationary phase for solid-phase extraction (SPE). The host monolithic support was prepared by in-situ UV polymerization in spin column format. Two approaches were developed to incorporate the IL into the polymeric monolithic matrix: generation of IL onto the surface monolith, and copolymerization by addition of the IL to the polymerization mixture, which gave the best results. Fatigue crack propagation from a cold-worked hole

Abstract The cold expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the influence on fatigue life of cold-worked process was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Then, a parametric study on material hardening behavior and Bauschinger’s parameter was performed for several loading conditions in order to determine their effect on crack growth propagation. The results of the numerical tests have exhibited a good prediction of the fatigue life of the component.

Highly sensitive monoclonal antibody-based immunoassays for the analysis of fluopyram in food samples

Monoclonal antibody-based techniques have become a useful analytical technology in the agro-food sector. Nowadays, residues of the recently registered fungicide fluopyram are increasingly being found in quality control programs. In the present study, novel chemical derivatives of this pesticide were prepared and specific and high-affinity monoclonal antibodies to fluopyram were raised for the first time. Determination of Mercury in Milk by Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence: A Green Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Experiment

Green analytical chemistry principles were introduced to undergraduate students in a laboratory experiment focused on determining the mercury concentration in cow and goat milk. In addition to traditional goals, such as accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and limits of detection in method selection and development, attention was paid to the evaluation of green parameters of the analytical methods. Milk samples were evaluated by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) and the wastes were minimized by co-precipitation with Fe(III).

Assessment of the BMI, WHR and W/Ht in pre- and postmenopausal women

The main goal of this study was to determine whether and how values of the BMI, WHR and W/Ht indicators change in pre- and postmenopausal women. The tested group consisted of 10,216 women aged 25-95 years. Data were collected during the national campaign "Fighting Obesity", organized by Hand-Prod Company between 2000-2002 across Poland, when adult women voluntarily filled in a questionnaire and participated in anthropometric measurements. The BMI, WHR and W/Ht values were calculated based on these measurements. The values of the BMI, WHR and W/Ht change with age.
