Scaling guidelines of a soliton-based power limiter for 2R-optical regeneration applications
2010
International audience; In this work, we report scaling rules for the design of an all-fibered soliton-based power limiter for reamplification and reshaping (2R) regeneration process. In particular, we propose general guidelines to fix the optimum fiber length and initial power of the regenerator. We quantitatively point out the optical power limiting effect of the device enabling a significant reduction of the amplitude jitter of a degraded signal. Influence of the initial level of amplitude jitter is discussed and the results are compared with a self-phase modulation-based configuration working in the normal dispersion regime. Realistic numerical simulations in the context of 160 Gbit/s s…
Asymptotic Analysis of a Slightly Rarefied Gas with Nonlocal Boundary Conditions
2011
In this paper nonlocal boundary conditions for the Navier–Stokes equations are derived, starting from the Boltzmann equation in the limit for the Knudsen number being vanishingly small. In the same spirit of (Lombardo et al. in J. Stat. Phys. 130:69–82, 2008) where a nonlocal Poisson scattering kernel was introduced, a gaussian scattering kernel which models nonlocal interactions between the gas molecules and the wall boundary is proposed. It is proved to satisfy the global mass conservation and a generalized reciprocity relation. The asymptotic expansion of the boundary-value problem for the Boltzmann equation, provides, in the continuum limit, the Navier–Stokes equations associated with a…
ApproximatingL 2-invariants by their finite-dimensional analogues
1994
LetX be a finite connectedCW-complex. Suppose that its fundamental group π is residually finite, i.e. there is a nested sequence ... ⊂ Г m + 1 ⊂ Г m ⊂ ... ⊂ π of in π normal subgroups of finite index whose intersection is trivial. Then we show that thep-thL 2-Betti number ofX is the limit of the sequenceb p(Xm)/[π:Г m ] whereb p(Xm) is the (ordinary)p-th Betti number of the finite covering ofX associated with Г m .
First Results on the Scalar WIMP-Pion Coupling, Using the XENON1T Experiment
2018
We present first results on the scalar coupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to pions from 1 t yr of exposure with the XENON1T experiment. This interaction is generated when the WIMP couples to a virtual pion exchanged between the nucleons in a nucleus. In contrast to most nonrelativistic operators, these pion-exchange currents can be coherently enhanced by the total number of nucleons and therefore may dominate in scenarios where spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions are suppressed. Moreover, for natural values of the couplings, they dominate over the spin-dependent channel due to their coherence in the nucleus. Using the signal model of this new WIMP-pion channel, …
Ab initio simulations on migration paths of interstitial oxygen in corundum
2016
Abstract Ionizing radiation produces in Al 2 O 3 (corundum) crystals primary Frenkel pairs of complementary defects (in oxygen sublattice these are oxygen vacancies and interstitial oxygen ions, V O − O i ). The interstitial O i atoms begin to migrate above certain temperature and create the dumbbell pairs with regular oxygen atoms (O reg − O i ). We have calculated the optimal dumbbell configurations and optimized further migration paths ( i.e. , O i interstitial can break the bond with one O reg atom and moves towards another, one of four next-neighbor O reg atoms). To simulate all possible O i migration trajectories, we have performed large-scale hybrid DFT-LCAO PBE0 calculations on 2 …
Nuclear Analysis of an ITER Blanket Module
2013
ITER blanket system is the reactor’s plasma-facing component, it is mainly devoted to provide the thermal and nuclear shielding of the Vacuum Vessel and external ITER components, being intended also to act as plasma limiter. It consists of 440 individual modules which are located in the inboard, upper and outboard regions of the reactor. In this paper attention has been focused on to a single outboard blanket module located in the equatorial zone, whose nuclear response under irradiation has been investigated following a numerical approach based on the Monte Carlo method and adopting the MCNP5 code. The main features of this blanket module nuclear behaviour have been determined, paying part…
Search for sleptons in e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 161 GeV and 172 GeV
1997
The data recorded by the ALEPH experiment at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 161 GeV and 172 GeV were analysed to search for sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of leptons. No evidence for the production of these particles was found. The number of candidates observed is consistent with the background expected from four-fermion processes and gammagamma-interactions. Improved mass limits at 95% C.L. are reported.
Search for events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least two tau leptons in 7 TeV proton–proton collision data with the ATLAS det…
2012
A search for events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least two tau leptons has been performed using 2 fb[superscript −1] of proton–proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and a 95% CL upper limit on the visible cross section for new phenomena is set, where the visible cross section is defined by the product of cross section, branching fraction, detector acceptance and event selection efficiency. A 95% CL lower limit of 32 TeV is set on the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) scale Λ independent of tan β. These limits provide the most s…
A strategy to study the role of the charm quark in explaining the Delta{I}=1/2 rule
2004
We present a strategy designed to separate several possible origins of the well-known enhancement of the Delta{I}=1/2 amplitude in non-leptonic kaon decays. In particular, we seek to disentangle the contribution of physics at the typical QCD scale (soft-gluon exchange) from the effects at the scale of the charm quark mass. This is achieved by considering QCD with an unphysically light charm quark, so that the theory possesses an approximate SU(4)_L x SU(4)_R chiral symmetry. By computing the relevant operator matrix elements and monitoring their values as the charm quark mass departs from the SU(4)-symmetric situation, the role of the charm quark can be assessed. We study the influence of t…
Limits on tau lepton-flavor violating decays into three charged leptons
2010
A search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor violating decay of the tau lepton into three charged leptons has been performed using an integrated luminosity of 468 fb(-1) collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. In all six decay modes considered, the numbers of events found in data are compatible with the background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions are set in the range (1.8-3.3) x 10(-8) at 90% confidence level.
