Analytical utility of quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the determination of pesticide residues in comparison with an optimized column …

2009

Abstract A multiresidue method for the analysis of 30 pesticides with different physicochemical properties in fruits and vegetables was developed. The method involves a rapid and small-scale extraction procedure based on matrix solid-phase dispersion using octadecylsilyl (C18) as the dispersant and dichloromethane as the eluent. The target pesticides were determined using column high-performance liquid chromatography/triple quadrupole-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/QqQ-MS/MS). The method was validated for sensitivity, linearity, reproducibility, and accuracy. A recovery study was conducted at 3 different levels, and the average ranged from 74 to 99 for all of the studied compounds, with relat…

Acute exposure to 50ppm toluene does not increase sleepiness

2005

Abstract The Pupillographic Sleepiness Test (PST) is a new neurophysiological method to assess sleepiness. In an exposure study to a constant exposure level of 50 ppm toluene on 20 healthy men, our aim was to find out, if increased sleepiness could be seen with PST. PST was performed before and after 4.5 h of exposure. General complaints were assessed with the Swedish Performance Evaluation System (SPES) self-assessment questionnaire, once before and during exposure. Values obtained during exposure were related to pre-exposure values. Parametric cross-over analysis of logarithmic Pupillary Unrest Index (PUI) values did not show an effect of toluene exposure. In a nonparametric cross-over an…

Risk analysis in bioequivalence and biowaiver decisions

2013

This article evaluates the current biowaiver guidance documents published by the FDA, EU and WHO from a risk based perspective. The authors introduce the use of a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) risk calculation tool to show that current regulatory documents implicitly limit the risk for bioinequivalence after granting a biowaiver by reduction of the incidence, improving the detection and limiting the severity of any unforeseen bioinequivalent product. In addition, the authors use the risk calculation to expose yet unexplored options for future extension of comparative in vitro tools for biowaivers.

A measurement of the phases of the CP-violating amplitudes in K0→2π decays and a test of CPT invariance

1990

Abstract The phases of the CP-violating amplitudes in K0→π+π− and K0→2π0 decays, φ+−=46.9°±2.2° and φ00=47.1°±2.8°, have been measured in the same experiment, and a direct comparison gives the phase difference φ00−φ+−=0.2°±2.9°. This result leads to an upper limit on possible CPT violation in the K0 mass matrix, of |(m K 0 −m K 0 )/m K 0 | −18 at the 95% confidence level and is the most stringent test of the equality of particle and antiparticle masses.

Optimized analysis of the critical behavior in polymer mixtures from Monte Carlo simulations

1992

A complete outline is given for how to determine the critical properties of polymer mixtures with extrapolation methods similar to the Ferrenberg-Swendsen techniques recently devised for spin systems. By measuring not only averages but the whole distribution of the quantities of interest, it is possible to extrapolate the data obtained in only a few simulations nearT c over the entire critical region, thereby saving at least 90% of the computer time normally needed to locate susceptibility peaks or cumulant intersections and still getting more precise results. A complete picture of the critical properties of polymer mixtures in the thermodynamic limit is then obtained with finite-size scali…

Monte Carlo study of the ising model phase transition in terms of the percolation transition of “physical clusters”

1990

Finite squareL×L Ising lattices with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interaction are simulated using the Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithm. Both thermal properties (internal energyU, specific heatC, magnetization 〈|M|〉, susceptibilityχ) and percolation cluster properties relating to the “physical clusters,” namely the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters (percolation probability 〈P∞〉, percolation susceptibilityχp, cluster size distributionnl) are evaluated, paying particular attention to finite-size effects. It is shown that thermal properties can be expressed entirely in terms of cluster properties, 〈P∞〉 being identical to 〈|M|〉 in the thermodynamic limit, while finite-size corrections differ. In contr…

Classification theory for anequilibrium phase transitions

1993

The paper introduces a classification of phase transitions in which each transition is characterized through its generalized order and a slowly varying function. This characterization is shown to be applicable in statistical mechanics as well as in thermodynamics albeit for different mathematical reasons. By introducing the block ensemble limit the statistical classification is based on the theory of stable laws from probability theory. The block ensemble limit combines scaling limit and thermodynamic limit. The thermodynamic classification on the other hand is based on generalizing Ehrenfest's traditional classification scheme. Both schemes imply the validity of scaling at phase transition…

Effect of O2 control and monitoring on the nutraceutical properties of extra virgin olive oils

2016

Abstract The presence of oxygen during malaxation has key role in improving Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) quality in terms of volatile and phenolic compounds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the head space malaxer oxygen concentration on the physicochemical characteristics and nutraceutical properties of EVOO from the Nocellara del Belice olives. The acidic compounds were related to the concentration of the oxygen presented in the machine headspace considering a new software application for the online oxygen management opportunely designed and applicable to all the existing plants. The right timepoint and oxygen concentration of the malaxation process was establ…

Two-dimensional phononic thermal conductance in thin membranes in the Casimir limit

2011

We discuss computational analysis of phononic thermal conduction in the suspended membrane geometry, in the experimentally commonly appearing case where heat can flow out radially in two dimensions from a central source. As we are mostly interested in the low-temperature behavior where bulk scattering of phonons becomes irrelevant, we study the limit where all phonon scattering takes place at the membrane surfaces. Moreover, we limit the discussion here to the case where this surface scattering is fully diffusive, the so called Casimir limit. Our analysis shows that in the two-dimensional case, no analytic results are available, in contrast to the well known 1D Casimir limit. Numerical solu…
