Large time behavior for a porous medium equation in a nonhomogeneous medium with critical density

2014

Abstract We study the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical singular density | x | − 2 ∂ t u = Δ u m , in R N × ( 0 , ∞ ) , where m > 1 and N ≥ 3 , with nonnegative initial condition u ( x , 0 ) = u 0 ( x ) ≥ 0 . The asymptotic behavior proves to have some interesting and striking properties. We show that there are different asymptotic profiles for the solutions, depending on whether the continuous initial data u 0 vanishes at x = 0 or not. Moreover, when u 0 ( 0 ) = 0 , we show the convergence towards a peak-type profile presenting a jump discontinuity, coming from an interesting asymptotic simplification…

New perspectives of EU Member States Constitutional Courts as actors in the European Union integration process.

2013

Our purpose is to examine the origin and development of constitutional limits case law doctrine, in order to understand better the relationship between the highest courts of EU Member States and European Court of Justice in the European multilevel legal system. And finally, we would like to study the actual position and new perspectives of EU Member States Constitutional Courts as actors in EU integration process. Our purpose is to examine the origin and development of constitutional limits case law doctrine, in order to understand better the relationship between the highest courts of EU Member States and European Court of Justice in the European multilevel legal system. Long-range cohesive interactions of non-local continuum faced by fractional calculus

2008

Abstract A non-local continuum model including long-range forces between non-adjacent volume elements has been studied in this paper. The proposed continuum model has been obtained as limit case of two fully equivalent mechanical models: (i) A volume element model including contact forces between adjacent volumes as well as long-range interactions, distance decaying, between non-adjacent elements. (ii) A discrete point-spring model with local springs between adjacent points and non-local springs with distance-decaying stiffness connecting non-adjacent points. Under the assumption of fractional distance-decaying interactions between non-adjacent elements a fractional differential equation in…

Probiotics in transition: novel strategies

2015

Regulations regarding health claims made for probiotics demand their proven effectiveness and limit the array of microbial species regarded as safe for live consumption. Novel strategies such as moving to postbiotics and genetically modified probiotics may be necessary to increase the effectiveness of microbial products.

Utility of the Mantel-Haenszel Procedure for Detecting Differential Item Functioning in Small Samples

2004

Sample-size restrictions limit the contingency table approaches based on asymptotic distributions, such as the Mantel-Haenszel (MH) procedure, for detecting differential item functioning (DIF) in many practical applications. Within this framework, the present study investigated the power and Type I error performance of empirical and inferential criteria for DIF detection in small samples. Sample sizes (50/50, 100/50, 200/50, and 100/100 for the reference and focal groups, respectively), ability distributions (equal and unequal), and amount of DIF (moderate and high) were manipulated. The results show the advantages of employing theMHchi-square statistic using high levels of significance (•…

Contribution to variational analysis : stability of tangent and normal cones and convexity of Chebyshev sets

2014

The aim of this thesis is to study the following three problems: 1) We are concerned with the behavior of normal cones and subdifferentials with respect to two types of convergence of sets and functions: Mosco and Attouch-Wets convergences. Our analysis is devoted to proximal, Fréchet, and Mordukhovich limiting normal cones and subdifferentials. The results obtained can be seen as extensions of Attouch theorem to the context of non-convex functions on locally uniformly convex Banach space. 2) For a given bornology β on a Banach space X we are interested in the validity of the following "lim inf" formula (…).Here Tβ(C; x) and Tc(C; x) denote the β-tangent cone and the Clarke tangent cone to …

A symmetric nonlocal damage theory

2003

The paper presents a thermodynamically consistent formulation for nonlocal damage models. Nonlocal models have been recognized as a theoretically clean and computationally efficient approach to overcome the shortcomings arising in continuum media with softening. The main features of the presented formulation are: (i) relations derived by the free energy potential fully complying with nonlocal thermodynamic principles; (ii) nonlocal integral operator which is self-adjoint at every point of the solid, including zones near to the solid's boundary; (iii) capacity of regularizing the softening ill-posed continuum problem, restoring a meaningful nonlocal boundary value problem. In the present app…

Möglichkeiten der 16-Schicht-CT bei der linksventrikulären Funktionsbestimmung: Beurteilung zweier unterschiedlicher Software-Tools zur quantitativen…

2004

PURPOSE To determine global and regional left ventricular (LV) function from retrospectively gated multidetector row computed tomography (CT) by using two different semiautomated analysis tools and to correlate the results with those of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS Nineteen patients (5 females, 14 males, mean age 69 years) underwent 16-slice spiral-CT (MS-CT) with standard technique without administration of beta-blockers for a decrease in the cardiac rate. Ten series of images were reconstructed at every 10 % of the RR-interval. With commercially available software capable of semiautomated contour detection, end-diastolic and end-systolic LV volumes (EDV and ESV)…

Sistema de monitorización en continuo a tiempo real de la concentración de oxígeno durante el batido para la producción de aceite de oliva virgen

2012

During the mechanical extraction process of Virgin Olive Oil (VOO) some important physical phenomena and enzymatic transformations occur which influence the quality of the final product. The control of process parameters is crucial to ensure the quality of VOO, therefore process monitoring and control is a fundamental requirement in the modern VOO processing industry. The present work proposes an innovative Real-Time Monitoring System (RTMS) aimed at continuously measuring the oxygen concentration during the malaxation process in order to establish a correlation with the quality of the final product obtained. This monitoring system is based on an oxygen concentration sensor directly connect…
