Improving Lossless Image Compression with Contextual Memory
2019
With the increased use of image acquisition devices, including cameras and medical imaging instruments, the amount of information ready for long term storage is also growing. In this paper we give a detailed description of the state-of-the-art lossless compression software PAQ8PX applied to grayscale image compression. We propose a new online learning algorithm for predicting the probability of bits from a stream. We then proceed to integrate the algorithm into PAQ8PX&rsquo
Imperialist competitive algorithm for determining the parameters of a Sugeno fuzzy controller
2020
Abstract We used an imperialist competitive algorithm to determine the parameters of a fuzzy controller of type Sugeno that would ensure a good unit step response of a second-order single-input and single-output automatic system.
Tuning a Mamdani Fuzzy Controller with an Imperialist Competitive Algorithm
2021
We have implemented a fuzzy controller with a view to regulating a single-input and single-output second-order linear system. The fuzzy controller was a Mamdami proportional-derivative controller. To determine the parameters of the fuzzy controller we have used an imperialist competitive algorithm. This type of algorithm has a long running time so we implemented also a parallel version of the algorithm that we run on HPC Zamolxes located at the Engineering Faculty of “Lucian Blaga” University from Sibiu. Because we did not have on this computer a version of MATLAB allowing to write parallel algorithms, we implemented the entire application in the C language using the MPI library.
Lists of Spanish sentences with equivalent predictability, phonetic content, length, and frequency of the last word.
2010
This paper presents a pool of Spanish sentences designed for use in cognitive research and speech processing in circumstances in which the effects of context are relevant. These lists of sentences are divided into six lists of 25 equivalent high-predictability sentences and six lists of 25 low-predictability sentences according to the extent to which the last word can be predicted by the preceding context. These lists were also equivalent in phonetic content, length and frequency of the last word. These lists are intended for use in psycholinguistic research with Spanish-speaking listeners.
Probabilistic Self-Localization and Mapping - An Asynchronous Multirate Approach
2008
[EN] In this paper, we present a set of robust and efficient algorithms with O(N) cost for the solution of the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) problem of a mobile robot. First, we introduce a novel object detection method, which is mainly based on multiple line fitting method for landmark detection with regular constrained angles. Second, a line-based pose estimation method is proposed, based on LeastSquares (LS). This method performs the matching of lines, providing the global pose estimation under assumption of known Data-Association. Finally, we extend the FastSLAM (FActored Solution To SLAM) algorithm for mobile robot self-localisation and mapping by considering the asynchr…
Probabilistic characterization of flood hazard using bivariate analysis based on copulas
2014
This study presents an innovative approach to obtain flood hazard maps where hydrological input (synthetic flood design event) to a 2D hydraulic model has been defined by generating flood peak discharges and volumes from a bivariate statistical analysis, through the use of copulas. Synthetic hydrographs were generated by means two different approaches: an indirect one, where rainfall were generated by a stochastic bivariate rainfall generator to be entered a distributed conceptual rainfall-runoff model that consisted of a soil moisture routine and a flow routing routine; and a direct one, where stochastic generation of flood peaks and flow volumes have been obtained via copulas, which descr…
Mediated learning materials: visibility checks in telepresence robot mediated classroom interaction
2021
Videoconferencing is increasingly used in education as a way to support distance learning. This article contributes to the emerging interactional literature on video-mediated educational interaction by exploring how a telepresence robot is used to facilitate remote participation in university-level foreign language teaching. A telepresence robot differs from commonly used videoconferencing set-ups in that it allows mobility and remote camera control. A remote student can thus move a classroom-based robot from a distance in order to shift attention between people, objects and environmental structures during classroom activities. Using multimodal conversation analysis, we focus on how partici…
Automatic segmentation of the spine by means of a probabilistic atlas with a special focus on ribs suppression
2017
[EN] Purpose: The development of automatic and reliable algorithms for the detection and segmentation of the vertebrae are of great importance prior to any diagnostic task. However, an important problem found to accurately segment the vertebrae is the presence of the ribs in the thoracic region. To overcome this problem, a probabilistic atlas of the spine has been developed dealing with the proximity of other structures, with a special focus on ribs suppression. Methods: The data sets used consist of Computed Tomography images corresponding to 21 patients suffering from spinal metastases. Two methods have been combined to obtain the final result: firstly, an initial segmentation is performe…
Bayesian metanetworks for modelling user preferences in mobile environment
2003
The problem of profiling and filtering is important particularly for mobile information systems where wireless network traffic and mobile terminal’s size are limited comparing to the Internet access from the PC. Dealing with uncertainty in this area is crucial and many researchers apply various probabilistic models. The main challenge of this paper is the multilevel probabilistic model (the Bayesian Metanetwork), which is an extension of traditional Bayesian networks. The extra level(s) in the Metanetwork is used to select the appropriate substructure from the basic network level based on contextual features from user’s profile (e.g. user’s location). Two models of the Metanetwork are consi…
An Improved Skew Angle Detection and Correction Technique for Historical Scanned Documents Using Morphological Skeleton and Progressive Probabilistic…
2017
International audience; Skew detection is a crucial step for document analysis systems. Indeed, it represents one of the basic challenges, especially in case of historical documents analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel robust skew angle detection and correction technique. Morphological Skeleton is introduced to significantly reduce the amount of data to treat by removing the redundant pixels and keeping only the central curves of the image components. The proposed method then uses Progressive Probabilistic Hough Transform (PPHT) to identify image lines. A special procedure is finally applied in order to estimate the global skew angle of the document image from these detected lines. E…
