‘Life is team play’: social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the context of Special Olympics
2022
This article provides insights from an empirical study on the meaning of social inclusion for Finnish athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) who participate in Special Olympics (SO). A further objective was to explore the athletes’ perceptions of the role SO has played in their lives regarding their personal experiences of social inclusion. Data were transcripts of five focus group interviews carried out with a total of 31 participants during the last SO World Winter Games in 2017. The content was analysed with the aim of identifying the main themes in the athletes’ conversations about social inclusion. Three main themes were identified: inclusion as a contrast to past discrimination;…
Neutral experts or passionate participants? Renegotiating expertise and the right to act in Finnish participatory social policy
2018
This article examines a case of participatory social policy in which former beneficiaries were invited as ‘experts-by-experience’ into Finnish social welfare organisations. It combines a governmentality perspective with the analytical tools of the sociology of engagements to explore as what the projects’ participants are engaged, and how the differing demands made on their ways of being are made to appear as legitimate. The article shows how different definitions of expertise are used to steer the participants’ forms of engagement, and how these definitions appear valid only within a specific frame of justifying civic participation. It concludes that the participants’ expertise is defined i…
Temporality in cosmopolitan solidarity : Archival activism and participatory documentary film as mediated witnessing of suffering at Europe’s borders
2019
This article develops and extends the idea of cosmopolitan solidarity to temporality through a case study of archival activism and participatory film-making. It examines mediated witnessing within the Italian online audiovisual archive Archivio delle memorie migranti, which documents and archives the experiences of contemporary migrants in Italy. The moral basis of Archivio delle memorie migranti is cosmopolitan solidarity, which is usually understood as a practice that crosses spatial and communal boundaries. However, the ethics of solidarity also bridges past, present and future generations. Through the case of Archivio delle memorie migranti, this article demonstrates the significance o…
Niewolnik i władca przedmiotów : człowiek wobec rzeczy w prozie realistycznej
2020
Awans „rzeczy”, jaki nastąpił w literaturze doby realizmu, miał wiele przyczyn, między innymi naukowy światopogląd epoki i zainteresowanie materialnymi uwarunkowaniami egzystencji, rozszerzenie tematyki i werystyczną opisowość, obiektywizm i rzeczowość uszczegółowionej narracji. W rozległym kompleksie prozy realistycznej można przykładowo wyróżnić cztery sposoby czy modele funkcjonowania rzeczy: (1) rzecz w znaczeniu elementu boskiego i sensownego ładu świata, zgodnie jeszcze z tradycją metafizyczno-filozoficzną (np. przypadek biedermeierowskiej twórczości Adalberta Stiftera, gdzie „rzecz” jest terminem i pojęciem kluczowym, a pedantyczne katalogowanie przedmiotów swoistą obsesją narracji);…

Molecular modes of action of cantharidin in tumor cells
2005
Cancer chemotherapy is often limited by patient's toxicity and tumor drug resistance indicating that new drug development and modification of existing drugs is critical for improving the therapeutic response. Traditional Chinese medicine is a rich source of potential anticancer agents. In particular, cantharidin (CAN), the active principle ingredient from the blister beetle, Mylabris, has anti-tumor activity, but the cytotoxic mechanism is unknown. In leukemia cells, cantharidin induces apoptosis by a p53-dependent mechanism. Cantharidin causes both DNA single- and double-strand breaks. Colony-forming assays with knockout and transfectant cells lines showed that DNA polymerase beta, but not…
Quantification of Listeria monocytogenes in salads by real time quantitative PCR
2005
Abstract A real time quantitative PCR (RTQ-PCR) was carried out purifying DNA extracts of Listeria monocytogenes using a High Pure Listeria Sample Preparation Kit and quantifying in a LightCycler system with hybridisation probes. A standard curve was constructed with serial dilutions. A range linear relationship, from 10 to 10 5 L. monocytogenes colony forming units (CFU), was observed between threshold cycle ( C t ) and logarithmic concentration of the serial dilutions. The assay was linear in a range from 10 to 10 5 L. monocytogenes CFU and the coefficient of determination ( r 2 ) was > 0.98. RTQ-PCR presented an efficiency of > 85%. The accuracy of the PCR-based assay, expressed as % bia…

Ongoing spread of colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in different wards of an acute general hospital, Italy, June to December 2011.
2012
We describe polyclonal spread of colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in an acute general hospital in Italy. Between June and December 2011, 58 colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates were recovered from 28 patients admitted to different wards, but mainly in the intensive care units. All isolates were tested for drug susceptibility and the presence of beta-lactamase (bla) genes. Clonality was investigated by repetitive extragenic palindromic (rep)-PCR and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Fifty-two isolates had minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for colistin of 6-128 mg/L, carried blaKPC3 and were attributed to sequence type ST258. The remaining six isolates were susceptible to…
Comparison of Four Commercial DNA Extraction Kits for PCR Detection of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Staphylococc…
2008
Four commercial DNA extraction methods, PrepMan Ultra (Applied Biosystems), InstaGene Matrix (BioRad), DNeasy Tissue kit (Qiagen), and UltraClean (MoBio), were tested for PCR detection of Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157: H7, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus in fresh, minimally processed vegetables. For comparative purposes, sensitivity assays with specific PCRs were carried out after DNA extraction with the four methods in green pepper, broccoli, and onion artificially inoculated with the four pathogens separately. As confirmed by statistical analysis, the DNeasy Tissue kit rendered the highest sensitivity values in the three matrices assayed for Salmonella, L. monocytoge…
