Unusual multiparasitism causes overweight in a wood mouse,Apodemus sylvaticus(Rodentia: Muridae), from a post-fire regeneration area

2016

Multiparasitism is a common ecological phenomenon, being the norm rather than the exception, in the wild. This article describes the case of a wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, originating from a post-fire regeneration area, infected with multiple helminth species and remarkable overweight. The mouse analyzed was captured at a post-fire regeneration site in the Serra Calderona Natural Park (Comunitat Valenciana, Spain). The rodent was captured and marked for the first time in the spring of 2011, weighing 22.5 g. When it was recaptured in the winter of 2012, it weighed 44.0 g. The mouse was parasitized by a total of 31 helminths belonging to seven species, including six Taenia parva metacesto…

Draft genomes of Nautella italica strains CECT 7645(T) and CECT 7321: Two roseobacters with potential pathogenic and biotechnological traits.

2015

Nautella italica is a member of the family Rhodobacteraceae described in 2009. Strain LMG 24365(T) (=CECT 7645(T), =DSM 26436(T), =CCUG 55857(T)) was isolated from a marine electroactive biofilm growing in a stainless steel cathode exposed to natural water in Genoa, Italy. Strain AD 41 (=CECT 7321) was isolated from water surrounding cultivated gilthead seabream larvae in Cadiz, Spain. The genomes of strains CECT 7645(T) and CECT 7321 were sequenced, assembled, annotated and compared. Here we describe the most relevant findings: biofilm formation, quorum sensing, resistance to multiple drugs, heavy metals and oxidative stress, cytotoxins, and poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production genes. T…

Do Brincar do Bebê ao Brincar da Criança: Um Estudo sobre o Processo de Subjetivação da Criança Autista

2018

Vibrational and Molecular Properties of Mg2+ Binding and Ion Selectivity in the Magnesium Channel MgtE

2018

Magnesium ions (Mg2+) are crucial for various biological processes. A bacterial Mg2+ channel, MgtE, tightly regulates the intracellular Mg2+ concentration. Previous X-ray crystal structures showed that MgtE forms a dimeric structure composed of a total of 10 transmembrane α helices forming a central pore, and intracellular soluble domains constituting a Mg2+ sensor. The ion selectivity for Mg2+ over Ca2+ resides at a central cavity in the transmembrane pore of MgtE, involving a conserved aspartate residue (Asp432) from each monomer. Here, we applied ion-exchange-induced difference FTIR spectroscopy to analyze the interactions between MgtE and divalent cations, Mg2+ and Ca2+. Using site-dire…

Purpose To establish a simplified three-dimensional (3D) meibomian gland culture model using a meibomian gland epithelial cell (HMGEC) line that might be a useful tool to gain deeper insights into meibomian gland dysfunction. For this purpose, 3D differentiation patterns and growth characteristics of HMGECs were studied on various membranes/scaffolds as well as in hanging drops. Methods Several types of inserts consisting of different materials (Millicell-HA, Millicell-PCF, ThinCert, and Alvetex) as well as hanging drop culture were analyzed. Culture conditions were optimized employing exposure to air (air-lift) and different cell culture media for a maximum of 28 days. To characterize cell…

The respiratory virome in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

2018

Aim: To characterize the respiratory virome in moderate/severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients using metagenomics, with healthy subjects as the reference. Patients & Methods: Sputum COPD samples were collected during stability and exacerbations with negative usual-care microbiologic analysis. Results: Eukaryotic viruses from the Anelloviridae, Herpesviridae and Retroviridae families and phages from the Shiphoviridae family were commonly found in COPD, and the respiratory virome in stability and noninfectious exacerbations showed a substantial similarity. DNA viruses with the highest relative abundance in COPD are Anelloviridae. Conclusion: These results support a …

Polyphosphate Reverses the Toxicity of the Quasi-Enzyme Bleomycin on Alveolar Endothelial Lung Cells In Vitro

2021

Simple Summary Bleomycin (BLM) is a medication introduced used to treat various types of cancer, including testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, and Hodgkin’s disease. Its most serious side effect is pulmonary fibrosis and impaired lung function. Using A549 human lung cells it is shown that, in parallel to an increased cell toxicity and DNA damage, BLM causes a marked enlargement of the cell nucleus. This effect is abolished by inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), if this physiological polymer is administered together with BLM. The detoxification of BLM is–most likely–caused by the upregulation of the gene encoding the BLM hydrolase which inactivates BLM in vitro and in vivo. This study contribute…

Ophthalmological Findings in Mucopolysaccharidoses

2019

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a heterogenous group of lysosomal storage disorders caused by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The accrual of these compounds results in phenotypically varied syndromes that produce multi-organ impairment with widespread systemic effects. The low incidence of MPS (approximately 1/25,000 live births) in conjunction with the high childhood mortality rate had limited the availability of research into certain clinical features, especially ocular manifestations. As the recent successes of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) have greatly increased life expectancy in these patients, they have served a…

De novo transcriptome assembly of a facultative parasitic nematode Pelodera (syn. Rhabditis) strongyloides

2018

Pelodera strongyloides is a generally free-living gonochoristic facultative nematode. The whole genomic sequence of P. strongyloides remains unknown but 4 small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssrRNA) gene sequences are available. This project launched a de novo transcriptome assembly with 100 bp paired-end RNA-seq reads from normal, starved and wet-plate cultured animals. Trinity assembly tool generated 104,634 transcript contigs with N50 contig being 2195 bp and average contig length at 1103 bp. Transcriptome BLASTX matching results of five nematodes (C. elegans, Strongyloides stercoralis, Necator americanus, Trichuris trichiura, and Pristionchus pacificus) were consistent with their evolutionary …

Purpose To investigate the retinal nerve fiber layer profile measured by optical coherence tomography and its relation to refractive error and axial length. Methods The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based study in Mainz, Germany. At the five-year follow-up examination, participants underwent optical coherence tomography, objective refraction and biometry. Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) was segmented using proprietary software. The pRNFL profiles were compared between different refraction groups and the angle between the maxima, i.e., the peaks of pRNFL thickness in the upper and lower hemisphere (angle between the maxima of pRNFL thickness [AMR]) was computed. Mult…
