The Origins of Northern European Autographa Gamma Individuals Evaluated Using Hydrogen Stable Isotopes
2018
1. Many insect species are migratory. As the spring progresses, adults gradually depart from their over‐wintering habitats and arrive in northern zones where they reproduce during the summer. Understanding this transgenerational and highly adaptive migratory behaviour is crucial when interpreting life cycle dynamics of many insect pests. 2. Origins of migratory silver Y moths, Autographa gamma (Linnaeus, 1758), captured from Finland, were studied with stable hydrogen analysis of their wings (δ2Hw). 3. The difference between spring and autumn generation δ2Hw values indicate different geographical natal origins. The probability surface map shows that the spring generation probably emerged in …

Kun äiti käyttää väkivaltaa : lastensuojelun sosiaalityöntekijöiden näkemyksiä
2014
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tarkastella äitien lapsiinsa kohdistamaa väkivaltaa ilmiönä. Tutkimusaineiston olen kerännyt haastattelemalla kahdessa eri kaupungissa työskenteleviä kuutta lastensuojelun sosiaalityöntekijää. Tutkielmastani valmistui ensin työn teoreettinen viitekehys, jonka jälkeen toteutin haastatteluaineiston keräämisen. Haastatteluiden tuottaman tiedon avulla yritän vastata alla oleviin asettamiini tutkimusongelmiini. Kuinka usein ja millaisena ilmiönä naisten lapsiinsa kohdistama väkivalta näkyy lastensuojelussa? Määrittyykö ilmiö yhteiskunnassa sosiaaliseksi ongelmaksi? Millaisia seurauksia väkivallasta nähdään olevan? Millaista apua naiset ja lapset tarvitsevat? Mite…
Latest results from CUPID-0
2022
International audience; CUPID-0 is a pilot experiment in scintillating cryogenic calorimetry for the search of neutrino-less double beta decay. 26 ZnSe crystals were operated continuously in the first project phase (March 2017 - December 2018), demonstrating unprecedented low levels of background in the region of interest at the Q-value of $^{82}\rm{Se}$. From this successful experience comes a demonstration of full alpha to beta/gamma background separation, the most stringent limits on the $^{82}\rm{Se}$ neutrino-less double beta decay, as well as the most precise measurement of the $^{82}$Se half-life. After a detector upgrade, CUPID-0 began its second and last phase (June 2019 - February…
Silent rain: does the atmosphere-mediated connectivity between microbiomes influence bacterial evolutionary rates?
2020
ABSTRACT Air carries a vast number of bacteria and viruses over great distances all the time. This leads to continuous introduction of foreign genetic material to local, established microbial communities. In this perspective, I ask whether this silent rain may have a slowing effect on the overall evolutionary rates in the microbial biosphere. Arguably, the greater the genetic divergence between gene ‘donors’ and ‘recipients’, the greater the chance that the gene product has a deleterious epistatic interaction with other gene products in its genetic environment. This is due to the long-term absence of check for mutual compatibility. As such, if an organism is extensively different from other…
Estimating Tree Health Decline Caused by Ips typographus L. from UAS RGB Images Using a Deep One-Stage Object Detection Neural Network
2022
Various biotic and abiotic stresses are causing decline in forest health globally. Presently, one of the major biotic stress agents in Europe is the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) which is increasingly causing widespread tree mortality in northern latitudes as a consequence of the warming climate. Remote sensing using unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) together with evolving machine learning techniques provide a powerful tool for fast-response monitoring of forest health. The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of a deep one-stage object detection neural network in the detection of damage by I. typographus in Norway spruce trees using UAS RGB images. A Scaled…
Elementary School Teachers' Experiences of Implementing the Teacher Classroom Management Method - Case Study in Finland
2023
The diversity of pupils and their different difficulties challenge teachers' skills and methods in teaching. Some behavioral challenges require rapid intervention and a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach from the teachers. An internationally recognized tool, TCM (Teacher Classroom Management), aims to support pupils' socio-emotional development, improve teacher-pupil interaction, and strengthen school-home cooperation. This pilot study examines teachers' experiences of TCM in Finnish primary school context. The study is qualitative, and the data (N=16) was collected through focus group interviews. According to the results, the teacher's strengthened group management skills wer…
S-pot - A benchmark in spotting signs within continuous signing
2014
In this paper we present S-pot, a benchmark setting for evaluating the performance of automatic spotting of signs in continuous sign language videos. The benchmark includes 5539 video files of Finnish Sign Language, ground truth sign spotting results, a tool for assessing the spottings against the ground truth, and a repository for storing information on the results. In addition we will make our sign detection system and results made with it publicly available as a baseline for comparison and further developments. peerReviewed
