Assessing Online Collaborative Problem Solving Among School Children in Finland : A Case Study Using ATC21S TM in a National Context

2018

Online collaborative problem-solving tasks were piloted in five Finnish schools participating in the Assessment and Teaching of Twenty-first Century Skills (ATC21STM) project. Process stream data from online tasks were captured from 480 Finnish students who explored dyad problem spaces. The log file data were explored to identify indicative behaviours of collaborative problem solving (CPS), which were coded into a series of dichotomous indicators. The Rasch simple logistic model was used to analyse student performance across the social and cognitive dimensions of CPS. Analysis of the Finnish data indicated that the construct can be interpreted using a two-dimensional model, matching the fin…

On-surface synthesis on a bulk insulator surface

2018

On-surface synthesis has rapidly emerged as a most promising approach to prepare functional molecular structures directly on a support surface. Compared to solution synthesis, performing chemical reactions on a surface offers several exciting new options: due to the absence of a solvent, reactions can be envisioned that are otherwise not feasible due to the insolubility of the reaction product. Perhaps even more important, the confinement to a two-dimensional surface might enable reaction pathways that are not accessible otherwise. Consequently, on-surface synthesis has attracted great attention in the last decade, with an impressive number of classical reactions transferred to a surface as…

Improved stability of black silicon detectors using aluminum oxide surface passivation

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 ESA and CNES We have studied how high-energy electron irradiation (12 MeV, total dose 66 krad(Si)) and long term humidity exposure (75%, 75 °C, 500 hours) influence the induced junction black silicon or planar photodiode characteristics. In our case, the induced junction is formed using n-type silicon and atomic-layer deposited aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which contains a large negative fixed charge. We compare the results with corresponding planar pn-junction detectors passivated with either with silicon dioxide (SiO2) or Al2O3. The results show that the induced junction detectors remain stable as their responsivity remains nearly unaffected during the electron beam…

Endocytotic uptake of HPMA-based polymers by different cancer cells: impact of extracellular acidosis and hypoxia.

2017

Daniel Gündel,1 Mareli Allmeroth,2 Sarah Reime,1 Rudolf Zentel,2 Oliver Thews1 1Institute of Physiology, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Halle (Saale), 2Institute of Organic Chemistry, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany Background: Polymeric nanoparticles allow to selectively transport chemotherapeutic drugs to the tumor tissue. These nanocarriers have to be taken up into the cells to release the drug. In addition, tumors often show pathological metabolic characteristics (hypoxia and acidosis) which might affect the polymer endocytosis.Materials and methods: Six different N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA)-based polymer structures (homopolymer as well as…

Least-squares temporal difference learning based on an extreme learning machine

2014

Abstract Reinforcement learning (RL) is a general class of algorithms for solving decision-making problems, which are usually modeled using the Markov decision process (MDP) framework. RL can find exact solutions only when the MDP state space is discrete and small enough. Due to the fact that many real-world problems are described by continuous variables, approximation is essential in practical applications of RL. This paper is focused on learning the value function of a fixed policy in continuous MPDs. This is an important subproblem of several RL algorithms. We propose a least-squares temporal difference (LSTD) algorithm based on the extreme learning machine. LSTD is typically combined wi…

A Visualizable Test Problem Generator for Many-Objective Optimization

2022

Visualizing the search behavior of a series of points or populations in their native domain is critical in understanding biases and attractors in an optimization process. Distancebased many-objective optimization test problems have been developed to facilitate visualization of search behavior in a two-dimensional design space with arbitrarily many objective functions. Previous works have proposed a few commonly seen problem characteristics into this problem framework, such as the definition of disconnected Pareto sets and dominance resistant regions of the design space. The authors’ previous work has advanced this research further by providing a problem generator to automatically create use…

Optimal Impulse Control When Control Actions Have Random Consequences

1997

We consider a generalised impulse control model for controlling a process governed by a stochastic differential equation. The controller can only choose a parameter of the probability distribution of the consequence of his control action which is therefore random. We state optimality results relating the value function to quasi-variational inequalities and a formal optimal stopping problem. We also remark that the value function is a viscosity solution of the quasi-variational inequalities which could lead to developments and convergence proofs of numerical schemes. Further, we give some explicit examples and an application in financial mathematics, the optimal control of the exchange rate…

Determining an unbounded potential for an elliptic equation with a power type nonlinearity

2022

In this article we focus on inverse problems for a semilinear elliptic equation. We show that a potential $q$ in $L^{n/2+\varepsilon}$, $\varepsilon>0$, can be determined from the full and partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. This extends the results from [M. Lassas, T. Liimatainen, Y.-H. Lin, and M. Salo, Partial data inverse problems and simultaneous recovery of boundary and coefficients for semilinear elliptic equations, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. (2021)] where this is shown for H\"older continuous potentials. Also we show that when the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is restricted to one point on the boundary, it is possible to determine a potential $q$ in $L^{n+\varepsilon}$. The authors of arXiv:2202.0…
