Parvovirus B19 nonstructural protein-induced damage of cellular DNA and resultant apoptosis.

2010

Parvovirus B19 is a widespread virus with diverse clinical presentations. The viral nonstructural protein, NS1, binds to and cleaves the viral genome, and induces apoptosis when transfected into nonpermissive cells, such as hepatocytes. We hypothesized that the cytotoxicity of NS1 in such cells results from chromosomal DNA damage caused by the DNA-nicking and DNA-attaching activities of NS1. Upon testing this hypothesis, we found that NS1 covalently binds to cellular DNA and is modified by PARP, an enzyme involved in repairing single-stranded DNA nicks. We furthermore discovered that the DNA nick repair pathway initiated by poly(ADPribose)polymerase and the DNA repair pathways initiated by …

Characterization of a cDNA encoding RP43, a CUB-domain-containing protein from the tube of Riftia pachyptila (Vestimentifera), and distribution of it…

2000

A major 43kDa protein from the protective tube of Riftiapachyptila (Vestimentifera), named RP43, was partly microsequenced after isolation by SDS/PAGE from the protein fraction of tubes collected around the hydrothermal vents at the East Pacific Rise. On the basis of the partial peptide sequences obtained, experiments using reverse-transcriptase-mediated PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends led to the complete cDNA sequence. Analysis of deduced amino acid sequence of RP43 showed the presence of CUB domains (100–110-residue-spanning domains first reported in the complement subcomponents C1r/C1s, epidermal-growth-factor-related sea urchin protein and bone morphogenetic protein 1) that se…

Towards a meta-method for the engineering of situational evaluation methods for domain-specific modeling tools

2015

Sovellusaluemallinnus (Domain-Specific Modeling, DSM) on eräs ohjelmistotuotannon lähestymistavoista, jossa sovelluskehityksen abstraktiotasoa nostetaan ohjelmoinnista sovellusaluekeskeiseen mallinnukseen. Arviointitulosten …

Theory for the stationary polariton response in the presence of vibrations

2019

We construct a model describing the response of a hybrid system where the electromagnetic field - in particular, surface plasmon polaritons - couples strongly with electronic excitations of atoms or molecules. Our approach is based on the input-output theory of quantum optics, and in particular it takes into account the thermal and quantum vibrations of the molecules. The latter is described within the $P(E)$ theory analogous to that used in the theory of dynamical Coulomb blockade. As a result, we are able to include the effect of the molecular Stokes shift on the strongly coupled response of the system. Our model then accounts for the asymmetric emission from upper and lower polariton mod…

Infracommunity level aggregation in the monogenean communities of crucian carp (Carassius carassius).

2005

Aggregation is one of the distinctive features in parasite-host relationships, which has generally been studied at the level of host communities. Parasite aggregation at the infracommunity level may nevertheless be important for intraspecific interactions such as parasite mating success and opportunities for cross-fertilization. In the present paper, we studied the infracommunity aggregation of 3 highly abundantDactylogyrus(Monogenea) species occurring on the gills of crucian carp (Carassius carassius). In line with the previous work on monogenean communities, we observed no competition between the species. At the species level, parasites were distributed unevenly on the gills showing aggre…

Tutkimusmatka pienyrittäjän työvalmiuksien ytimeen : kirjallisuuteen ja DACUM-analyysiin perustuva kartoitus

2007

This study examines the occupational competence and attitudes that small business entrepreneurs consider essential to their work. Small business entrepreneurs were given an opportunity to express their views in small focus groups of peer entrepreneurs. Consensus opinions formulated by the groups were then meticulously documented. The results expose the very core or soul of entrepreneurial competence and attitudes by determining what small business entrepreneurs feel they must be able to do. Acknowledgement and acceptance of tacit knowledge as part of one's competence and attitudes would introduce a systematic approach to the recording of such knowledge and enable its transfer to co-workers …

Agency and Learning in the Work of Software Professionals

2017

This chapter addresses software professionals’ agency and learning in work characterized by a need for innovative learning and fluency in renewing work practices. The study presented was conducted with software professionals in a medium-sized Finnish company producing digital business applications. We applied a mixed-method approach to data collection and analysis. Regarding professional agency, we found a range of opportunities to influence work-related matters. The professionals were primarily able to influence their working hours and the order of their work tasks, but had fewer opportunities to influence customer projects, or their salary. To some extent they were able to develop themsel…

Intestinal helminth communities of the long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) off the Faroe Islands.

1993

SUMMARYThe intestines of 170 long-finned pilot whales, Globicephala melas, caught off the Faroe Islands (N.E. Atlantic) were examined for helminth parasites. Eight species were detected but only 4 occurred in at least 10% of the sample. No core or recurrent group of species were identified and no correlations between abundances of species were significant. Diversity values were far below those reported for other endotherms. Colonization by helminths was random, whales not being readily colonized. These features point to largely unpredictable, isolationist infracommunities, there being little potential for inter-specific interactions. Older hosts tended to harbour more diverse infracommuniti…
