Preemptive CD8 T-Cell Immunotherapy of Acute Cytomegalovirus Infection Prevents Lethal Disease, Limits the Burden of Latent Viral Genomes, and Reduce…
1998
ABSTRACT In the immunocompetent host, primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is resolved by the immune response without causing overt disease. The viral genome, however, is not cleared but is maintained in a latent state that entails a risk of virus recurrence and consequent organ disease. By using murine CMV as a model, we have shown previously that multiple organs harbor latent CMV and that reactivation occurs with an incidence that is determined by the viral DNA load in the respective organ (M. J. Reddehase, M. Balthesen, M. Rapp, S. Jonjic, I. Pavic, and U. H. Koszinowski. J. Exp. Med. 179:185–193, 1994). This predicts that a therapeutic intervention capable of limiting the load of lat…
Inbreeding rate modifies the dynamics of genetic load in small populations
2012
The negative fitness consequences of close inbreeding are widely recognized, but predicting the long-term effects of inbreeding and genetic drift due to limited population size is not straightforward. As the frequency and homozygosity of recessive deleterious alleles increase, selection can remove (purge) them from a population, reducing the genetic load. At the same time, small population size relaxes selection against mildly harmful mutations, which may lead to accumulation of genetic load. The efficiency of purging and the accumulation of mutations both depend on the rate of inbreeding (i.e., population size) and on the nature of mutations. We studied how increasing levels of inbreeding …
Heterogeneity of HVR-1 quasispecies is predictive of early but not sustained virological response in genotype 1b-infected patients undergoing combine…
2003
ISDR mutation pattern and HVR-1 quasispecies were analyzed in HCV genotype 1b-infected patients treated with either PEG- or STD-IFN plus ribavirin, in order to find virological correlates of therapy outcome. ISDR region analysis, performed at baseline (T0) and at 4 weeks of therapy (T1), indicated that ISDR mutation pattern was not predictive of response to treatment. Moreover, no selection of putative resistant strains in the first month of therapy was observed. Viral load was not correlated with any parameter of HVR-1 heterogeneity. Among the HVR-1 heterogeneity parameters considered, complexity was inversely correlated to viral load decline at T1. In univariate analysis, complexity, prop…
Fuel Load and Potential Flight Ranges of Passerine Birds Migrating through the Western Edge of the Pyrenees
2011
Abstract. The estimation of fuel load and the potential flight ranges of migrant birds are crucial to understanding the ecological and evolutionary significance of bird migration strategies. The movement of migrant birds between Iberia and the rest of Western Europe is thought to be shaped by the Pyrenees and nearby seas. Because of this area's unique geography, the routes of migrants that move to (autumn migration) or from (spring migration) Iberia tend to pass through the western and eastern edges of the Pyrenees. Fuel-load analyses and the assessment of potential flight ranges from these edges can provide insights about the extent of Iberia's use as a consistent stopover and fuelling are…
Patterns of migration and wintering of RobinsErithacus rubeculain northern Iberia
2010
The aim of this study was to analyse the patterns of migration and wintering of European Robins Erithacus rubecula in northern Iberia (Plaiaundi Ecological Park, Irun, N Spain). Overall, 185 Robins were ringed at weekly trapping sessions from September 2004 to April 2005. The temporal distribution of abundance and recaptures indicated that the autumn migration period lasted from September to November, the winter period from November to February, and the spring migration from March to April. Some wintering Robins arrived earlier than most of the migrants which passed through the area in autumn, whilst most left the area before the majority of spring migrants appeared. First‐winter Robins wer…
New geo-portal for MODIS/SEVIRI image products with geolocation-based retrieval functionality
2015
A large number of remote sensing data sets have been collected in recent years by Earth observation instruments such as the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra/Aqua satellite and the spinning enhanced visible and infrared imager (SEVIRI) aboard the geostationary platform Meteosat Second Generation. The advanced remote sensing products resulting from the analysis of these data are useful in a wide variety of appli- cations but require significant resources in terms of storage, retrieval, and analysis. Despite the wide availability of these MODIS/SEVIRI products, the data coming from these instruments are spread among different locations and retrieved from d…
A path analysis model of self-rated health among older people.
1999
The aim of this study was to examine the structure of self-rated health among 75-year-old men and women. The study was part of the Evergreen project, comprising all the 75-year-old residents (N = 382) of Jyväskylä, in central Finland, in 1989. The data were collected by interviews, questionnaires and laboratory examinations, focusing on different domains of health and functional capacity. Of the target group, 91.6% (119 men and 231 women) participated in the interview, and 77.2% (104 men and 191 women) took part in the clinical and laboratory examinations. Path analysis models (LISREL 8) were used to examine the structure of self-rated health. About half the participants self-rated their he…
Oral health care activities performed by caregivers for institutionalized elderly in Barcelona-Spain
2013
Objectives: To describe the frequency of brushing teeth and cleaning of dentures, performed by caregivers, for institutionalized elderly people. Methods: A cross-sectional study in a sample of 196 caregivers of 31 health centers in Barcelona. The dependent variables were frequency of dental brushing and frequency of cleaning of dentures of the elderly by caregivers. The independent variables were characteristics of caregivers and institutions. We performed bivariate and multivariate descriptive analyses. Robust Poisson regression models were fitted to determine factors associated with the dependent variables and to assess the strength of the association. Results: 83% of caregivers were wome…
A high dietary glycemic index increases total mortality in a Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk
2014
© 2014 Castro-Quezada et al. Objective: Different types of carbohydrates have diverse glycemic response, thus glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) are used to assess this variation. The impact of dietary GI and GL in all-cause mortality is unknown. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between dietary GI and GL and risk of all-cause mortality in the PREDIMED study. Material and Methods: The PREDIMED study is a randomized nutritional intervention trial for primary cardiovascular prevention based on community-dwelling men and women at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Dietary information was collected at baseline and yearly using a validated 137-item food freque…
Job demand and control in mid-life and physical and mental functioning in early old age: do childhood factors explain these associations in a British…
2014
ObjectivesAdverse work-related exposures have been linked with decreased physical and mental functioning in later life, however, whether childhood factors explain the associations between work exposures and functioning is unknown. Our aim was to investigate if job demand and control in mid-life were related to self-reported physical and mental functioning in early old age and whether childhood factors explained these associations.DesignProspective cohort study.SettingEngland, Scotland and Wales.Participants and outcome measuresData come from the UK Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development, a cohort with follow-up since birth in 1946. 1485 occupationally active stud…
