Niveles de Salud Psicosocial en función del Nivel de Experiencia en Residencias [Psychosocial health levels depending on experience in workers in res…

2015

Scientific literature has paid little attention to the direct care staff residences for people with disabilities. However, their workload is considerable and it has higher risk of stress than other social service workers. The main objective of this study is to analyze the relationships between experience and the psychosocial health levels in workers who look after people with disabilities in residences. A transversal study with 100 participants was made. Results show that workers who are working more time in residences with disable people have lower levels in some health variables (hypertension, headache, back pain, stomachache, GHQ-total and GHQ-depression) and in psychosocial variables (e…

Allostatic Load and Children’s Disease

2021

Abstract Allostatic (over)load appears to be a substantial cause of morbidity for adults. For children, new aspects emerge. They are particularly significant for their repercussions in childhood and adult life: obesity, metabolic syndrome, arterial hypertension, insulin resistance, or eating disorder. It is desirable to identify clusters relevant for certain diseases to prevent long-time and irreversible consequences of allostatic load.

Workload, job satisfaction and occupational stress in Polish midwives before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

2021

Background The aim of this study was to describe, explain, and compare the correlations between workload, job satisfaction, and occupational stress levels in Polish midwives working before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods This study was cross-lagged in nature and conducted in 2 phases at public health facilities. The first phase took place between March and August 2018 before the current pandemic, and the second in February 2021. In total, 133 midwives working before the COVID-19 pandemic and 92 midwives working during the pandemic were surveyed. Results Analysis revealed that working during the pandemic, personal SARS-CoV-2 infection and workload were positive predict…

Neuroendocrine indicators of allostatic load reveal the impact of environmental acidification in fish

2020

Abstract When mobilized from surrounding soils and binding to gills at moderately low pH, aluminum (Al) cations can adversely affect fish populations. Furthermore, acidification may lead to allostatic overload, a situation in which the costs of coping with chronic stress affects long-term survival and reproductive output and, ultimately, ecosystem health. The brain's serotonergic system plays a key role in neuroendocrine stress responses and allostatic processes. Here, we explored whether sublethal effects of Al in acidified water affects serotonergic neurochemistry and stress coping ability in a unique land-locked salmon population from Lake Bygelandsfjorden, in southern Norway. Fish were …

Effects of waterborne iron overload and simulated winter conditions on acute physiological stress response of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus

2003

Two-year-old whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) were exposed for 30 days to episodic iron overload in iron-rich humic water (5%) supplemented with inorganic iron (5 mg FeL(-1)). Two parallel laboratory exposures were performed, one under conditions simulating winter and the other under conditions simulating spring. After exposure, some of the fish were subjected to acute handling stress in the form of a short air challenge to reveal possible modification of the primary and secondary stress responses. In whitefish sampled without additional handling, iron accumulated in the liver (under spring conditions) and gills (under winter and spring conditions); plasma catecholamine and beta-estradiol (b…

Effects of repeated short episodes of environmental acidification on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from a landlocked population

2020

Abstract Chronic or repeated exposure to environmental contaminants may result in allostatic overload, a physiological situation in which the costs of coping affect long-term survival and reproductive output. Continuous measurements in Otra, the largest river in southern Norway, show the occurrence of repeated 24–48 h episodes of acidification. This work investigates the impact of repeated short acidification episodes on a unique land-locked population of normally anadromous Atlantic salmon (“Bleke”). This was done by recording physiological measures of stress and allostatic load in fish exposed for 7 days to continuous or repeated episodes of simulated environmental acidification or untrea…

Increased Parasite Abundance Associated with Reproductive Maturity of the Clam Anodonta piscinalis

1999

Several studies on vertebrates have demonstrated that reproductive activities may increase the parasite load, but this has not been shown in invertebrate hosts. We studied abundance of a potentially harmful gill parasite, the ergasilid copepod Paraergasilus rylovi, from the freshwater bivalve host Anodonta piscinalis in relation to reproductive maturity of the host in the field. Prevalence of this previously unstudied parasite varied from 90 to 100%, and the mean parasite abundance from 16.3 to 28.8 among 3 study populations. Abundance of P. rylovi increased with host size. In the maturating age groups (3-5 yr) the length-adjusted mean parasite abundance among mature, reproducing female cla…

Muscle resting and TGF-β inhibitor treatment prevent fatty infiltration following skeletal muscle injury

2019

Background/Aims: Skeletal muscle injuries are the most common type of injury occurring in sports, and investigating skeletal muscle regeneration as well as understanding the related processes is an important aspect of the sports medicine field. The process of regeneration appears to be complex and precisely orchestrated, involving fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) which are a muscle-resident stem cell population that appears to play a major role in abnormal development of fibrotic tissue or intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). Our present study aims to investigate whether muscle resting or endurance exercise following muscle injury may change the behavior of FAPs and subsequently impact t…
