The non-random walk of stock prices: The long-term correlation between signs and sizes

2007

We investigate the random walk of prices by developing a simple model relating the properties of the signs and absolute values of individual price changes to the diffusion rate (volatility) of prices at longer time scales. We show that this benchmark model is unable to reproduce the diffusion properties of real prices. Specifically, we find that for one hour intervals this model consistently over-predicts the volatility of real price series by about 70%, and that this effect becomes stronger as the length of the intervals increases. By selectively shuffling some components of the data while preserving others we are able to show that this discrepancy is caused by a subtle but long-range non-…

Search for decays of stopped, long-lived particles from 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

2012

New metastable massive particles with electric and colour charge are features of many theories beyond the Standard Model. A search is performed for long-lived gluino-based R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31 pb[superscript −1]. We search for evidence of particles that have come to rest in the ATLAS detector and decay at some later time during the periods in the LHC bunch structure without proton–proton collisions. No significant deviations from the expected backgrounds are observed, and a cross-section limit is set. It can be interpreted as excluding gluino-based R-hadrons with masses less than 341 GeV at the 95 % …

Radiative decays in bottomonium beyond the long wavelength approximation

2019

We revisit the nonrelativistic quark model description of electromagnetic radiative decays in bottomonium. We show that even for the simplest spectroscopic quark model the calculated widths can be in good agreement with data once the experimental masses of bottomonium states and the photon energy are properly implemented in the calculation. For transitions involving the lower lying spectral states this implementation can be easily done via the Long Wave Length approximation. For transitions where this approximation does not apply we develop a new method of implementing the experimental energy dependencies.

Deceleration in the Expansion of SN 1993J

1997

A rarity among supernova, SN 1993J in M81 can be studied with high spatial resolution. Its radio power and distance permit VLBI observations to monitor the expansion of its angular structure. This radio structure was previously revealed to be shell-like and to be undergoing a self-similar expansion at a constant rate. From VLBI observations at the wavelengths of 3.6 and 6 cm in the period 6 to 42 months after explosion, we have discovered that the expansion is decelerating. Our measurement of this deceleration yields estimates of the density profiles of the supernova ejecta and circumstellar material in standard supernova explosion models.

Core-shifts and proper-motion constraints in the S5 polar cap sample at the 15 and 43 GHz bands

2018

We have studied a complete radio sample of active galactic nuclei with the very-long-baseline-interferometry (VLBI) technique and for the first time successfully obtained high-precision phase-delay astrometry atQband (43 GHz) from observations acquired in 2010. We have compared our astrometric results with those obtained with the same technique atUband (15 GHz) from data collected in 2000. The differences in source separations among all the source pairs observed in common at the two epochs are compatible at the 1σlevel betweenUandQbands. With the benefit of quasi-simultaneousUandQband observations in 2010, we have studied chromatic effects (core-shift) at the radio source cores with three d…

Wisps in the Galactic center: Near-infrared triggered observations of the radio source Sgr A* at 43 GHz

2016

Context. The compact radio and near-infrared (NIR) source Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) associated with the supermassive black hole in the Galactic center was observed at 7 mm in the context of a NIR triggered global Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) campaign. Aims. Sgr A* shows variable flux densities ranging from radio through X-rays. These variations sometimes appear in spontaneous outbursts that are referred to as flares. Multi-frequency observations of Sgr A* provide access to easily observable parameters that can test the currently accepted models that try to explain these intensity outbursts. Methods. On May 16-18, 2012 Sgr A* has been observed with the VLBA at 7 mm (43 GHz) for 6 hours each…

Imaging strong blazars with space VLBI

2020

Abstract The RadioAstron mission has obtained a series of detailed multi-frequency images of the brightest blazars of the radio sky concentrated in three key science programs. We present here results of the program on powerful jets in blazars. In the first two years of the mission, observations of compact relativistic jets in 0836+710, 3C 345, 3C 273, and 4C +69.21 were made at λ λ  18, 6, and 1.3 cm. The resulting images have revealed compact emitting regions with brightness temperature in excess of 10 13  K and a complex jet structure that can be explained by plasma instability developing in a relativistic outflow. We present here some highlights of these space-VLBI observations, designed…

The Static Stability of the Tropopause Region in Adiabatic Baroclinic Life Cycle Experiments

2011

Abstract The tropopause inversion layer (TIL) is a region of enhanced static stability just above the WMO-defined thermal tropopause. It is a ubiquitous feature in midlatitudes and is well characterized by observations. However, it is still lacking a satisfactory theoretical explanation. This study utilizes adiabatic baroclinic life cycle experiments to investigate dynamical mechanisms that lead to TIL formation. As the baroclinic wave grows, a strong TIL forms above anticyclonic anomalies, while no TIL is found above cyclonic anomalies; this is consistent with previous results. However, during the early growth phase there is no TIL in the global or zonal average: positive and negative anom…

Coherence loss in phase-referenced VLBI observations (Corrigendum)

2011

fat = K ν √ Δt sin θ, (2) where K ∼ 0.012 h0.5 GHz−1. This new equation implies a different value of the constant k1 in Eq. (4). The original value reported for k1 was ∼63, while the correct value is ∼1.3 × 104. Although Eq. (3) (together with the constants K and k1) was incorrectly written in the text, we emphasize that all the figures in the paper were generated, indeed, using the correct equations and constants.
