Social support provided by adolescents following a disaster and perceived social support, sense of community at school, and proactive coping.

2012

Heightened levels of support provision are systematically observed in adults immediately following natural disasters, yet knowledge about adolescents' social support provision is less extensive. This longitudinal study of 262 adolescents assessed their help-providing behaviors during and after a flood. It was hypothesized that social support provided by adolescents would relate to subsequent perceptions of their relationships with others and perceptions of the self. Descriptive analyses demonstrated that the majority of respondents reported that they provided tangible, emotional, and informational support to others in need. A series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated tha…

Teachers' Behavior and Pupils' Achievement Motivation as Determinants of Intended Helping Behavior in Physical Education

2013

The present two-wave longitudinal study examined the extent to which physical education (PE) teachers' democratic and socially supportive behavior, pupils' goal orientations, and the perceived motivational climate in PE explained differences in pupils' intended helping behavior by gender in PE classes. The results of 105 boys and 109 girls based on structural equation modeling revealed at both time points that the PE teachers' democratic and socially supportive behavior was positively related to pupils' concurrent perceptions of the motivational climate as task-involving as well as their higher concurrent intended helping behavior in PE. Pupils' prior perceptions of the motivational climate…

MK801 blocks hypoxic blood-brain-barrier disruption and leukocyte adhesion.

2008

The aim of the present study was to examine the signaling pathways of hypoxia followed by reoxygenation (H/R)-induced disruption of the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) in a co-culture of astrocytes and brain endothelial cells (BEC) in vitro. We analyzed the possible stabilizing effect of MK801, a highly selective N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, on BBB integrity. Levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), glutamate (Glut) release and monocyte adhesion were measured under normoxia and H/R. BBB integrity was monitored measuring the trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TEER). TEER values dropped under H/R conditions which was abolished by MK801. Glut release from astrocytes, but n…

Contemporary differences between men and women with acute coronary syndromes: CIAM multicenter registry.

2019

AIM Differences exist in the diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) between men and women. However, recent advancements in the management of ACSs might have attenuated this sex gap. We evaluated the status of ACS management in a multicenter registry in 10 tertiary Spanish hospitals. METHODS We enrolled 1056 patients in our study, including only those with type 1 myocardial infarctions or unstable angina presumably not related to a secondary cause in an 'all-comers' design. RESULTS The women enrolled (29%) were older than men (71.0 ± 12.8 vs. 64.0 ± 12.3, P = 0.001), with a higher prevalence of hypertension (71.0 vs. 56.5%, P < 0.001), insulin-treated diabetes (13.7 vs. 7.9…

Behavioral Effects of GABAA Receptor Stimulation and GABA-Transporter Inhibition

2000

Abstract The present analysis addressed behavioral changes after treatment with 4.5 mg/kg or 18.5 mg/kg of the GABA-uptake inhibitor tiagabine combined with either the benzodiazepine diazepam (1.5 mg/kg) or the imidazopyridine zolpidem (0.05 mg/kg), the latter two acting differentially on GABA A receptor subtypes. The study included 97 male PVG/OIaHsd rats. A standard open field, an enriched open field, and an elevated plus-maze was used to study rat behavior. Treatment with the low dose of tiagabine alone induced no specific behavioral effects, whereas the high dose had an anxiolytic-like potential. Furthermore, diazepam but not zolpidem displayed anxiolytic-like effects. Combination of ea…

Successful in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer after limited surgical treatment for tubal adenocarcinoma.

1989

A 29-year-old woman with tubal adenocarcinoma stage IA was treated only with bilateral salpingectomy, pelvic lymphadenectomy, and omentectomy. Two years later the patient successfully underwent in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, and at 39 weeks gave birth to a healthy son by cesarean section. The result of oncologic follow-up 3 years after surgery is negative.

Predicting how equipotent doses of chlorpromazine, haloperidol, sulpiride, raclopride and clozapine reduce locomotor activity in mice

2000

Distinguishing the specific effects of neuroleptics on one particular behaviour from its non-specific effects on motility is not easy. In this study, the effects of five neuroleptics on spontaneous motor activity were compared and the ED(50) values of these drugs to impair activity were calculated. Male and female mice were evaluated in an actimeter or in a shuttle-box used as an open field after the administration of chlorpromazine (0.4, 1.2, 3.6 mg/kg), haloperidol (0.1, 0.3, 0.9 mg/kg), raclopride (0.1, 0.3, 0.9 mg/kg), sulpiride (10, 30, 90 mg/kg) and clozapine (0.4, 1.2, 3.6 mg/kg), and two automatic and two observational activity measures were obtained. A very high correlation between…

Modifications of head turning and circling movement following sulpiride microinjections into nucleus accumbens in the rat

1995

The aim of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists between nucleus accumbens D2 receptors, circling behavior, and its first stage, the head turning. Rats were unilaterally lesioned in the substantia nigra with 6-hydroxydopamine and afterward treated with d-amphetamine IP following bilateral intraaccumbens microinjections (1, 5, 10 micrograms/0.5 microliters) of sulpiride, a D2 receptor antagonist. Computer-assisted video analysis allowed the study of some parameters (number of turns, type of turn, head turning duration, degree and speed) characterizing rotatory activity. Sulpiride microinfusion resulted in a dose-dependent decrease of the number of turns and head rotation …

Testing and using Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire: Mental health in relation to home nursing, home help, and family care among older, care-de…

2009

The aims of this study were to test the Norwegian version of Goldberg's 30-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-30) in a group of older, care-dependent individuals living at home; to describe self-reported mental health; and to relate mental health to receiving home nursing, home help, and family care. A sample of 234 home nursing patients in Norway aged 75 years and older was interviewed. Mental state was assessed using the GHQ-30. Reliability and validity were calculated with Spearman's rank correlations, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and Mann-Whitney U-test. The factor analysis was performed using the principal components analysis with varimax rotation and Kaiser normalization. Demogra…

Transmission of HIV Drug Resistance and the Predicted Effect on Current First-line Regimens in Europe

2016

Transmitted human immunodeficiency virus drug resistance in Europe is stable at around 8%. The impact of baseline mutation patterns on susceptibility to antiretroviral drugs should be addressed using clinical guidelines. The impact on baseline susceptibility is largest for nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
