Zur Bedeutung fachsprachlicher Anteile im Auslandsgermanistikstudium
2012
The amendment to the Polish university law provides, among other things, for the abrogation of the official list of study courses with compulsory study programs. In return, universities will be given more flexibility, with one of the priorities for the forthcoming years residing in a better adjustment of their programs to the changing needs on the labor market. In view of this and due to the fact that students’ interest in classical Germanic studies has drastically decreased in the past few years and will probably continue decreasing in the years to come, foreign Germanistics will have to break new ground. In this context, there will probably be a necessity for a stronger cooperation with r…
An LSP Framework for Translation and Interpreting Pedagogy
2021
In this article, we present a pedagogical framework for foreign language teaching in undergraduate translation and interpreting programmes. Within Translation Studies, many scholars support the idea that TILLT (Translation- and Interpreting-oriented Language Learning and Teaching) should be framed within the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP), as students will use language as a professional tool in their professional lives. Based on insights from LSP research and practice, the area of Translation Studies dedicated to the development of language competence and expertise research, we have selected and described the key aspects for the development of professional language use in…
Language for International Communication: Linking Interdisciplinary Perspectives (2nd international symposium)

This collection contains papers delivered at the 2nd international symposium "Language for International Communication: Linking Interdisciplinary Perspectives" held at the University of Latvia, Latvia, on 23-24 May 2013.
An international genome-wide meta-analysis of primary biliary cholangitis: Novel risk loci and candidate drugs.
2021
[BACKGROUND & AIMS] Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intra-hepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology. We undertook the largest GWMA of PBC to date, aiming to identify additional risk loci and prioritise candidate genes for in silico drug efficacy screening. [METHODS] We combined new and existing genotype data for 10, 516 cases and 20, 77…
Towards early risk biomarkers: serum metabolic signature in childhood predicts cardio-metabolic risk in adulthood
2021
Summary: Background: Cardiovascular diseases may originate in childhood. Biomarkers identifying individuals with increased risk for disease are needed to support early detection and to optimise prevention strategies. Methods: In this prospective study, by applying a machine learning to high throughput NMR-based metabolomics data, we identified circulating childhood metabolic predictors of adult cardiovascular disease risk (MetS score) in a cohort of 396 females, followed from childhood (mean age 11·2 years) to early adulthood (mean age 18·1 years). The results obtained from the discovery cohort were validated in a large longitudinal birth cohort of females and males followed from puberty to…
Maternal Iodine Status During Pregnancy Is Not Consistently Associated with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or Autistic Traits in Children
2020
Background: Severe iodine deficiency during pregnancy can cause intellectual disability, presumably through inadequate placental transfer of maternal thyroid hormone to the fetus. The association between mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency and child neurodevelopmental problems is not well understood. Objectives: We investigated the association of maternal iodine status during pregnancy with child attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autistic traits. Methods: This was a collaborative study of 3 population-based birth cohorts: Generation R (n = 1634), INfancia y Medio Ambiente (n = 1293), and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (n = 2619). Exclusion criteria were…
Polymer-metal plasmonic waveguide : passive and active components for integrated photonics
2009
Dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) enable transmission at a sub-wavelength scale of both electrical and plasmonic (optical waves at the interface between a metal and a dielectric) signals in the same circuitry. Moreover, the use of a polymer as the dielectric load enables the functionalization of DLSPPWs. Therefore, this configuration is of great interest for integrated photonic applications. However, DLSPPWs suffer strong losses due to dissipation into the metal film. We address here the possibility of compensating the losses using a configuration analogous to an optical amplifier. We first set theoretical (effective index model), numerical (differential metho…
