Impact of Plastic Debris on the Gut Microbiota of Caretta caretta From Northwestern Adriatic Sea
2021
Plastic pollution is nowadays a relevant threat for the ecological balance in marine ecosystems. Small plastic debris (PD) can enter food webs through various marine organisms, with possible consequences on their physiology and health. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), widespread across the whole Mediterranean Sea, is a “flagship species,” useful as indicator of the general pollution level of marine ecosystems. Ingested PD accumulate in the final section of turtles’ digestive tract before excretion. During their transit and accumulation, PD also interact with the residing microbial community, with possible feedback consequences on the host’s health. To explore the possible relati…
Physicochemical and Rheological Characterization of Different Low Molecular Weight Gellan Gum Products and Derived Ionotropic Crosslinked Hydrogels
2021
A series of four different low molecular weight gellan gum products was obtained by alkaline hydrolysis with the aim to investigate the impact of the molecular weight on the rheological properties of the polysaccharide aqueous dispersions and on the physicochemical characteristics of derived ionotropic crosslinked hydrogels. In particular, thermo-rheological analysis was conducted on aqueous dispersions to study the influence of molecular weight on the thermogelation properties typical of the native polysaccharide while strain sweep experiments were conducted to establish if aqueous dispersion shows a viscoelastic behavior. The effect of different Ca2+ on the rheological properties of hydro…
Caffeine as a Gelator
2016
Caffeine (a stimulant) and ethanol (a depressant) may have opposite effects in our body, but under in vitro conditions they can “gel” together. Caffeine, being one of the widely used stimulants, continued to surprise the scientific community with its unprecedented biological, medicinal and physicochemical properties. Here, we disclose the supramolecular self-assembly of anhydrous caffeine in a series of alcoholic and aromatic solvents, rendering a highly entangled microcrystalline network facilitating the encapsulation of the solvents as illustrated using direct imaging, microscopy analysis and NMR studies. Editorial debate: Challenges we oncologists, working within a universal healthcare system, have to face in these hard times
2020
I have been very much impressed by the clarity, pragmatism and good medical judgement of the article by Camilo Porta,1 a respected and dedicated ESMO faculty member and friend, giving his personal perspective on real issues many oncologists working in a public system are eventually facing during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. I understand Professor Porta is voicing what many oncologists from countries deeply affected by the pandemic, such as Italy or Spain, may think. Although I concur with most of his approaches and comments, I would like to complement some of these statements with some additional thoughts. Medicine was created more than 2500 years ago as a profession aiming at alleviating suffe…
Predictores de duelo complicado
2008
Pilar.
Productidinid brachiopods (Strophomenata, Productida), including Martinezchaconia luisae, new genus and new species of Linoproductidae, from the Carb…
2018
We describe three brachiopod species of the Suborder Productidina from the Ixtaltepec Formation, Carboniferous of the north of Oaxaca State, southern Mexico, found in peri-reef deposits. Stegacanthia bowsheri and Undaria sp. are members of the families Sentosiidae and Monticuliferidae respectively and were found in strata of the Visean (Middle Mississippian). Martinezchaconia luisae, new genus and species of the Family Linoproductidae, was recollected in Bashkirian-Moscovian (Lower-Middle Pennsylvanian) strata. The respective ages are inferred from the index species of brachiopods associated with the productidines herein described.
Occupational cognitive complexity and episodic memory in old age
2021
The aim of this study was to investigate occupational cognitive complexity of main lifetime occupation in relation to level and 15-year change in episodic memory recall in a sample of older adults (≥ 65 years, n = 780). We used latent growth curve modelling with occupational cognitive complexity (O*NET indicators) as independent variable. Subgroup analyses in a sample of middle-aged (mean: 49.9 years) men (n = 260) were additionally performed to investigate if a general cognitive ability (g) factor at age 18 was predictive of future occupational cognitive complexity and cognitive performance in midlife. For the older sample, a higher level of occupational cognitive complexity was related to…
Outcomes of Patients With Advanced NSCLC From the Intergroupe Francophone de Cancérologie Thoracique Biomarkers France Study by KRAS Mutation Subtypes
2020
Abstract Introduction KRAS mutations are detected in 20% to 30% of NSCLC. However, KRAS mutation subtypes may differently influence the outcome of patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods In the Biomarkers France study, 4894 KRAS mutations (26.2%) were detected in 4634 patients from the 17,664 enrolled patients with NSCLC. Survival and treatment data on noncurative stage III to IV NSCLC were available for 901 patients. First- and second-line treatment effects on progression-free survival and overall survival were analyzed according to the KRAS mutations subtype. Results Over 95% of patients with KRAS mutation were smokers or former smokers who were white (99.5%), presenting with adenocarcinoma…
Management of Spinal Bone Metastases With Radiofrequency Ablation, Vertebral Reinforcement and Transpedicular Fixation: A Retrospective Single-Center…
2022
Spine is a frequent site of bone metastases, with a 8.5 months median survival time after diagnosis. In most cases treatment is only palliative. Several advanced techniques can ensure a better Quality of Life (QoL) and increase life expectancy. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) uses alternating current to produce local heating and necrosis of the spinal lesion, preserving the healthy bone. RFA is supported by vertebral reinforcement through kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty in order to stabilize the fracture with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) injection, restoring vertebral body height and reducing the weakness of healthy bone. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy and advantages of …
