Testicular tumors in childhood: a national report

The authors report preliminary data of an Italian multicentric, retrospective study of primary testicular tumors (PTT) in childhood involving 20 Italian departments of pediatric surgery. Forty cases of PTT were observed during a 10-year period (1977–1987), with yolk-sac tumors being the most frequent (45%). Most testicular tumors were first perceived as a unilateral testicular mass. Scrotal ultrasonography represents the main diagnostic investigation, together with serum marker levels.

Bi-homogeneity and integrability of rational potentials

Abstract In this paper we consider natural Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom for which Hamiltonian function has the form H = 1 2 ( p 1 2 + p 2 2 ) + V ( q 1 , q 2 ) and potential V ( q 1 , q 2 ) is a rational function. Necessary conditions for the integrability of such systems are deduced from integrability of dominate term of the potential which usually is appropriately chosen homogeneous term of V. We show that introducing weights compatible with the canonical structure one can find new dominant terms which can give new necessary conditions for integrability. Periodic Discrete Splines

Periodic discrete splines with different periods and spans were introduced in Sect. 3.4. In this chapter, we discuss families of periodic discrete splines, whose periods and spans are powers of 2. As in the polynomial splines case, the Zak transform is extensively employed. It results in the Discrete Spline Harmonic Analysis (DSHA). Utilization of the Fast Fourier transform (FFT) enables us to implement all the computations in a fast explicit way.

AbstractIn this study, an innovative procedure is presented for the analysis of the static behavior of plates at the micro and nano scale, with arbitrary shape and various boundary conditions. In this regard, the well-known Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory is used to appropriately model small length scale effects. The proposed mesh-free procedure, namely the Line Element-Less Method (LEM), only requires the evaluation of simple line integrals along the plate boundary parametric equation. Liver transplantation and combined liver-heart transplantation in patients with familial amyloid polyneuropathy: A single-center experience

Liver transplantation (LT) is the only curative option for patients with familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) at present. Twenty patients with FAP underwent LT between May 1998 and June 2007. Transthyretin mutations included predominantly the Val30Met mutation but also 10 other mutations. Seven patients received a pacemaker prior to LT, and because of impairment of mechanical cardiac function, 4 combined heart-liver transplants were performed, 1 simultaneously and 3 sequentially. The first patient, who underwent simultaneous transplantation, died. Seven patients died after LT, with 5 dying within the first year after transplantation. International audience; Let $\Omega$ be a smooth, convex, unbounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$. Denote by $\mu_1(\Omega)$ the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue of the Hermite operator in $\Omega$; we prove that $\mu_1(\Omega) \ge 1$. The result is sharp since equality sign is achieved when $\Omega$ is a $N$-dimensional strip. Our estimate can be equivalently viewed as an optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality for functions belonging to the weighted Sobolev space $H^1(\Omega,d\gamma_N)$, where $\gamma_N$ is the $N$% -dimensional Gaussian measure.
D-Pseudo-Bosons, Complex Hermite Polynomials, and Integral Quantization

The D-pseudo-boson formalism is illustrated with two examples. The first one involves deformed complex Hermite polynomials built using finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the group GL(2, C) of invertible 2 × 2 matrices with complex entries. It reveals interesting aspects of these representations. The second example is based on a pseudo-bosonic generalization of operator-valued functions of a complex variable which resolves the identity. We show that such a generalization allows one to obtain a quantum pseudo-bosonic version of the complex plane viewed as the canonical phase space and to understand functions of the pseudo-bosonic operators as the quantized versions of functions…
