Antioxidant effects of resveratrol in cardiovascular, cerebral and metabolic diseases.

2013

Resveratrol-a natural polyphenolic compound-was first discovered in the 1940s. Although initially used for cancer therapy, it has shown beneficial effects against most cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. A large part of these effects are related to its antioxidant properties. Here we review: (a) the sources, the metabolism, and the bioavailability of resveratrol; (b) the ability of resveratrol to modulate redox signalling and to interact with multiple molecular targets of diverse intracellular pathways; (c) its protective effects against oxidative damage in cardio-cerebro-vascular districts and metabolic disorders such as diabetes; and (d) the evidence for its efficacy and toxicity…

Resveratrol and stroke: from chemistry to medicine.

2014

Stroke is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases and is known as a leading cause of death in the world. Despite to its high prevalence, there are limited effective therapeutic strategies for stroke till now. However, oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of stroke and therefore, antioxidant therapy could be used as a new therapeutic strategy. Among the antioxidants, some natural compounds are very interesting due to their low adverse effects. Resveratrol (3, 5, 4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a natural polyphenolic antioxidant found in grape skin, grape products, and peanuts as well as in red wine. In recent years, much attention has been paid to resveratrol due to …

Indicaxanthin Dietetics: Past, Present, and Future

2015

The betalamic acid derivatives of betalain pigments (purple-red betacyanins and yellow betaxanthins) are dietary compounds occurring in a few plant foods including beets (Beta vulgaris) and cactus pears (Opuntia spp.). Belonging to betaxanthins, indicaxanthin is rich in yellow cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica L., Mill). High dietary bioavailability of indicaxanthin in humans, as well as its physicochemical properties, radical-scavenging and antioxidant activities in various experimental models suggest this molecule as a promising nutraceutical agent and open perspectives for its applications. Life-long modulatory activity at the epigenetic level now appears as the new frontier to shed ligh…

Betanin inhibits the myeloperoxidase/nitrite-induced oxidation of human low-density lipoproteins

2007

Production of nitrogen dioxide by the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) in the presence of nitrite is now considered a key step in the pathophysiology of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. This study shows that betanin, a phytochemical of the betalain class, inhibits the production of lipid hydroperoxides in human LDL submitted to a MPO/nitrite-induced oxidation. Kinetic measurements including time-course of particle oxidation and betanin consumption, either in the presence or in the absence of nitrite, suggest that the antioxidant effect is possibly the result of various actions. Betanin scavenges the initiator radical nitrogen dioxide and can also act as a lipoperoxyl radical-scaven…

"Role of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Nutrient Uptake and Growth of Durum Wheat"

Soil microbiome is involved at different levels in the food web, in bio-geochemical nutrient cycles and in several interactions with plants. Based on its key role in the agro-ecosystem processes, the soil microbiome has been identified as one of the principal factors in an agriculture addressed to the ecological intensification. Among the several relationships established between plants and soil microorganisms, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is the most widespread. Two out of three of all plant taxa (among others the main crops) are involved in the AM symbiosis which takes place between the plant root system and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), a monophyletic group of fungi belong…

3D Matrix-Based Visualization System of Association Rules

2017

With the growing number of mining datasets, it becomes increasingly difficult to explore interesting rules because of the large number of resultant and its nature complexity. Studies on human perception and intuition show that graphical representation could be a better illustration of how to seek information from the data using the capabilities of human visual system. In this work, we present and implement a 3D matrix-based approach visualization system of association rules. The main visual representation applies the extended matrix-based approach with rule-to-items mapping to general transaction data set. A novel method merging rules and assigning weight is proposed in order to reduce the …

The influence of thin hard coatings on frictional behaviour in the orthogonal cutting process

2000

New knowledge about the tribological response deriving from the interaction of the substrate/coating-chip system, with special attention to the orthogonal cutting process when chatter-free end turning using natural contact tools, is developed. In order to evaluate the frictional behaviour of this process under modified contact conditions, experimental investigations including the contact temperature, the contact loads, friction and the frictional heat flux per unit area were carried out. In contrast to the most obvious approach, the coefficient of sliding friction versus the cutting speed, the contact temperature, the normal pressure and the interface control factor is considered. A number …

Efficient techniques for energy saving in data center networks

2018

Data centers are constructed with a huge number of network devices to support the expanding cloud based services. These devices are used to achieve the highest performance in case of full utilization of the network. However, the peak capacity of the network is rarely reached. Consequently, many devices are set into idle state and cause a huge energy waste leading to a non-proportionality between the network load and the energy consumed. In this paper, we propose a new approach to improve the efficiency of data centers in terms of energy consumption. Our approach exploits the correlation in time of the inter-node communication traffic and some topological features to maximize energy saving w…

Taxonomic categorisation of motivic patterns

2009

The issue of pattern description in computational models for motivic analysis is closely related to the cognitive debate on categorisation, in which are traditionally opposed “well-defined” and “ill-defined” categorisations. The ill-defined conceptualisation has been considered as a suitable framework for the formalisation of musical categorisation as it takes into account motivic variations. It seems that computational models rely rather on well-defined categorisation, due to its better controllability. The computational model we previously presented (Lartillot & Toiviainen, 2007) strikes a balance by developing a new flexible framework allowing the taking into account of unrestricted…

A New Scalable and Cost-Effective Congestion Management Strategy for Lossless Multistage Interconnection Networks

2005

In this paper, we propose a new congestion management strategy for lossless multistage interconnection networks that scales as network size and/or link bandwidth increase. Instead of eliminating congestion, our strategy avoids performance degradation beyond the saturation point by eliminating the HOL blocking produced by congestion trees. This is achieved in a scalable manner by using separate queues for congested flows. These are dynamically allocated only when congestion arises, and deallocated when congestion subsides. Performance evaluation results show that our strategy responds to congestion immediately and completely eliminates the performance degradation produced by HOL blocking whi…
