Stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis was used in a fish-farming impacted Mediterranean area (the Gulf of Gaeta, Central Tyrrhenian) to determine the predominant carbon sources available to bivalve molluscs cultivated around fish cages. Wether the organic matter generated by fish farming was taken up by the bivalve molluscs was also investigated. Protecting entanglement by adjusting the velocities of moving qubits inside non-Markovian environments

Efficient entanglement preservation in open quantum systems is a crucial scope towards a reliable exploitation of quantum resources. We address this issue by studying how two-qubit entanglement dynamically behaves when two atom qubits move inside two separated identical cavities. The moving qubits independently interact with their respective cavity. As a main general result, we find that under resonant qubit-cavity interaction the initial entanglement between two moving qubits remains closer to its initial value as time passes compared to the case of stationary qubits. The end-to-end available bandwidth of an Internet path is a desirable information that can be exploited to optimize system performance. Several tools have been proposed in the past to estimate it. However, existing measurement techniques were not designed for large-scale deployments. In this paper we show that current tools do not properly work where multiple probing processes share a portion of a path. Traffic monitoring is a key enabler for several planning and management activities of a Smart City. However, traditional techniques are often not cost efficient, flexible, and scalable. This paper proposes an approach to traffic monitoring that does not rely on probe vehicles, nor requires vehicle localization through GPS. Adaptable data models for scalable Ambient Intelligence scenarios

In most real-life scenarios for Ambient Intelligence, the need arises for scalable simulations that provide reliable sensory data to be used in the preliminary design and test phases. This works present an approach to modeling data generated by a hybrid simulator for wireless sensor networks, where virtual nodes coexist with real ones. We apply our method to real data available from a public repository and show that we can compute reliable models for the quantities measured at a given reference site, and that such models are portable to different environments, so as to obtain a complete, scalable and reliable testing environment.

In recent years, the increasing diffusion of malicious software has encouraged the adoption of advanced machine learning algorithms to timely detect new threats. A cloud-based approach allows to exploit the big data produced by client agents to train such algorithms, but on the other hand, poses severe challenges on their scalability and performance. We report on a computational key-project in astrophysics. The project is aimed at studying the interaction of a supernova shock wave with interstellar clouds. We describe the numerical code used, namely FLASH, a multi-dimensional astrophysical hydrodynamics code for parallel computers developed at the FLASH center (The University of Chicago); our team collaborates with, and contributes to, the FLASH project. We discuss the resources required for the whole project, the I/O management, the performance and the scalability of the code on IBM/Sp4 at CINECA.
