Tracking student teachers' technology-enhanced collaborative problem solving: Combining objective assessment data with subjective verbal reporting
2016
In spite of increasing interest, technology-enhanced formative assessment practices reflecting 21st century skills are not yet much studied, particularly in teacher education context. Also, studies that combine both objective and subjective data around these practices are still rare. This study responds to these challenges in exploration of student teachers’ collaborative problem solving (CPS) processes. Relevant events in CPS tasks are tracked through process data acquired via ATC21S™ portal, and complemented with students’ interpretations of these processes as cued retrospective reports. The broader aim is to provide student teachers with hands-on experiences of using novel, technology-en…

Student experiences of project-based learning in an analytical chemistry laboratory course in higher education
2020
Abstract This study describes students’ experiences in project-based learning (PjBL) incorporated as part of a revised undergraduate analytical chemistry laboratory course. We examined which phases were the easiest as well as the most challenging and what student skills developed during the research project. The research data were collected between 2016 and 2018 via two questionnaires. They were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. One questionnaire focused on the whole course (in 2016–2018, n = 127) of which only the answers on the research project questions were analyzed. The other questionnaire focused on only the research project (in 2018, n = 42). Based on the results of our…
Collaborative professional practice for strengthening teacher educator identities in Eritrea

The paper reports on findings from an action-research informed study of a semester-long series of professional development seminars and an interview study with individu…
Developing inclusive pre-service and in-service teacher education : Insights from Zanzibar primary school teachers
2017
Developing inclusive teacher education to improve learning and schooling for all children is attracting increasing interest worldwide. This study examined teachers’ insights into the development of inclusive teacher education by drawing on collaborative action research conducted by 20 primary school teachers in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and self-reflective journals kept by the teachers and the first author. The qualitative thematic content analysis revealed: (1) the need to embed inclusive education and action research into pre-service and in-service teacher education curricula and (2) both school-based organisational learning and school–…

Miesjohtajien isyysdiskurssit
2019
Tutkimuksen aineisto tuotettiin haastattelemalla 29 miesjohtajaa. Aineisto analysoitiin diskurssianalyysin keinoin. Tuloksena tulkittiin neljä isyysdiskurssia: ansaitsija-isyys -dis…

The Role of Surface Acting in the Relationship between Job Stressors, General Health and Need for Recovery Based on the Frequency of Interactions at …
2022
The aim of the study was to verify whether the frequency of face-to-face interactions with the public at work can reveal differences in how people react to emotional regulation demands. In particular, we investigated the mediating role of surface acting (a strategy of dealing with emotional dissonance) in the relationship between two typical job stressors (workload and mental load) and two outcomes closely related to work-related well-being: employees’ general health and the need for recovery. Prior studies investigating the detrimental effects of emotional dissonance mostly focused on service workers. However, in light of a survey conducted by the European Agency for Safety and Health at W…
