Experimental and Numerical Study on the Flow Field and Friction Factor in a Pressurized Corrugated Pipe

An experimental campaign including measurement of pressure drops and velocity profiles was conducted on the pressurized flow in a commercial corrugated pipe. The results show that the empirical graphs suggested by Morris in the fifties may produce inaccurate assessments of the friction factor, in particular, for low Reynolds numbers. The experimental data was then reproduced by means of a numerical model with the large eddy simulation (LES) technique. The friction factor behavior for low and relatively high Reynolds numbers was thus investigated. Green analytical chemistry principles were introduced to undergraduate students in a laboratory experiment focused on determining the mercury concentration in cow and goat milk. In addition to traditional goals, such as accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and limits of detection in method selection and development, attention was paid to the evaluation of green parameters of the analytical methods. Milk samples were evaluated by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) and the wastes were minimized by co-precipitation with Fe(III).

We studied the microhabitat selection and male sexual signalling behaviour in the wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata (Ohlert). Males strike dry leaves with their abdomen, producing an audible sexual drumming signal, and females use this signal to choose mating partners. In the field we followed male drum- ming rate and microhabitat selection using both the mark-recapture method and direct observations. Experimental Analysis of Horizontal Turbulence of Flow over Flat and Deformed Beds

Abstract Laboratory experiments in a straight flume were carried out to examine the evolution of large-scale horizontal turbulent structures under flat-bed and deformed-bed conditions. In this paper, the horizontal turbulence of flow under these conditions is analyzed and compared. The conditioned quadrant method is applied to verify the occurrence of turbulent events. The distributions of horizontal Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy are also presented and discussed. Results show the occurrence of an “initial” sequence of horizontal vortices whose average spatial length scales with the channel width. Under deformed-bed conditions, this spatial length does not change.

Colonies of the ant Temnothorax crassispinus inhabit mostly cavities in wood and hollow acorns. Typically in the field, nest sites that can be used by the ant are a limited resource. In a field experiment, it was investigated whether the ants prefer a specific size of nest, when different ones are available. In July 2011, a total of 160 artificial nests were placed in a beech-pine forest. Four artificial nests (pieces of wood with volume cavities, ca 415, 605, 730, and 980 mm3, respectively) were located on each square meter of the experimental plot. Excessive CO2 in the present-day ocean-atmosphere system is causing ocean acidification, and is likely to cause a severe biodiversity decline in the future, mirroring effects in many past mass extinctions. Fossil records demonstrate that organisms surviving such events were often smaller than those before, a phenomenon called the Lilliput effect.
