MRI-visible perivascular spaces: relationship to cognition and small vessel disease MRI markers in ischaemic stroke and TIA.

2013

Background MRI-visible perivascular spaces (PVS) are potential neuroimaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, but their functional significance and mechanisms remain uncertain. We investigated the association between PVS and cognitive impairment, and other MRI markers of small vessel disease, in a patient cohort of ischaemic stroke/transient ischaemic attack (TIA) referrals. Methods Data were collected from a prospective observational database. Standardised detailed neuropsychological testing was performed. A validated visual rating scale on T-2-weighted MRI was used to categorise PVS severity; validated scales were used to assess white matter hyperintensities (WMH), cerebral microb…

Dysarthria and lacunar stroke

1996

We investigated the supranuclear tracts involved in speech production in 8 patients with dysarthria associated with a single lacunar stroke.Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the lesion site in 7 out of 8 patients. We tested corticobulbar tract function using transcranial magnetic stimulation and demonstrated impairment of the corticolingual projections in all the patients and in 5 patients impairment of the corticofacial projections. Sensory function in the oral cavity was impaired in 1 out of 8 patients.99m Tc hexamethyl-propylene amine oxime-single-photon emission computerized tomography (HMPAO-SPECT) imaging, performed in 5 patients, showed cerebellar diaschisis in 1, suggesting additi…

La dote, il ius singulare e il ‘sistema didattico’ di Gaio

2016

This paper discusses the idea that the gap regarding the dowry in Gaius’ Institutes is due to the fact that Gaius intentionally did not deal with this subject because he considered it as 'ius singulare' and that this omission was filled in by a 'liber singularis' outside the Institutes. The existence of a "didactic system" made up of the Gaius’ Institutes and four 'libri singulares' for the classical age of Roman Law is also disputed.

Isolated dysarthria due to extracerebellar lacunar stroke: a central monoparesis of the tongue

1999

OBJECTIVES—The pathophysiology of dysarthria can preferentially be studied in patients with the rare lacunar stroke syndrome of "isolated dysarthria". METHODS— A single study was carried out on seven consecutive patients with sudden onset of isolated dysarthria due to single ischaemic lesion. The localisation of the lesion was identified using MRI. The corticolingual, cortico-orofacial, and corticospinal tract functions were investigated using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Corticopontocerebellar tract function was assessed using 99mTc hexamethylpropylene amine oxime-single photon emission computerised tomography (HMPAO-SPECT) in six patients. Sensory functions were evaluated clinically…

Lacunar fractal photon sieves

2007

We present a new family of diffractive lenses whose structure is based on the combination of two concepts: photon sieve and fractal zone plates with variable lacunarity. The focusing properties of different members of this family are examined. It is shown that the sieves provide a smoothing effect on the higher order foci of a conventional lacunar fractal zone plate. However, the characteristic self-similar axial response of the fractal zone plates is always preserved.

Polyadic devil's lenses.

2009

Devil’s lenses (DLs) were recently proposed as a new kind of kinoform lens in which the phase structure is characterized by the “devil’s staircase” function. DLs are considered fractal lenses because they are constructed following the geometry of the triadic Cantor set and because they provide self-similar foci along the optical axis. Here, DLs are generalized allowing the inclusion of polyadic Cantor distributions in their design. The lacunarity of the selected polyadic fractal distribution is an additional design parameter. The results are coined polyadic DLs. Construction requirements and interrelations among the different parameters of these new fractal lenses are also presented. It is …

Lacunary Bifurcation of Multiple Solutions of Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems

1991

In order to describe the type of nonlinear eigenvalue problems we are going to discuss, consider a densely defined closed linear operator T in a real Hilbert space H and let H1 be the Hilbert space which consists of the domain of T together with the graph norm. Also, let H 1 * be the dual space of H1 and denote the dual operator corresponding to T: H1 → H by T’:H → H 1 * . Since H1 is dense in H, we may view H as a subspace of H1, and then the scalar product (·,·) on H and the dual pairing on H1 × H 1 * coincide on H1 × H.

Axial behaviour of Cantor ring diffractals

2003

Cantor ring diffractals describe rotationally symmetric pupils constructed from a one-dimensional polyadic Cantor set. The influence on the axial irradiance of several fractal descriptors of such pupils, including fractal dimension, number of gaps and lacunarity, are investigated. It is shown that, contrary to their transversal response, the axial behaviour of these pupils does not resemble the fractal structure of the aperture. The sensitivity of such pupils to the spherical aberration is also analysed.

Clustering statistics in cosmology

2002

The main tools in cosmology for comparing theoretical models with the observations of the galaxy distribution are statistical. We will review the applications of spatial statistics to the description of the large-scale structure of the universe. Special topics discussed in this talk will be: description of the galaxy samples, selection effects and biases, correlation functions, Fourier analysis, nearest neighbor statistics, Minkowski functionals and structure statistics. Special attention will be devoted to scaling laws and the use of the lacunarity measures in the description of the cosmic texture.
