S9-Fibronectin, EGF-R, HB-EGF:biomarkers of urothelial damage during intravesical adjuvant therapy?

2013

Intravesical chemotherapy and immunotherapy with BCG represent the standard therapy to prevent recurrence after transurethral resection (TUR) of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMI-BC). Maintenance for at least one year is considered the best regimen. Noteworthy, a relevant number of patients do not complete the planned treatment due to local toxicity of the drug given intravesically1, 2. A major challenge for the urologists is to identify an early urothelial damage biomarker to prevent severe local toxicity requiring treatment interruption and to improve patient's compliance. The preliminary purpose of our research was to verify the possible correlation between urothelial damage induce…

PROPHYLACTIC BLADDER INSTILLATIONS WITH IALURIL (R) MAY REDUCE SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE RADIATION CYSTITIS IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING RADIOTHERAPY FOR PELVIC TU…

2012

Introduction: Acute radiation cystitis (RC) is a common and debilitating problem in patients undergoing radiotherapy for urogenital malignancies. Acute RC symptoms include painful micturition, urgency, frequency, and nicturia We studied the feasibility and efficacy of intravesical instillations with Ialuril® (sodium hyaluronate and chondroitin sulfate sterile solution) to reduce acute radiation cystitis in men and women undergoing pelvic radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The single-arm study was performed between September 2010 and June 2011 and included 15 patients who met the following criteria: primary or adjuvant radiotherapy for pelvic cancer. Exclusion criteria were: bladder cancer…

THE ROLE OF PERI-OPERATIVE BLOOD TRANSFUSION ON CANCER SPECIFIC AND OVERALL MORTALITY AFTER RADICAL CYSTECTOMY FOR BLADDER CANCER

2014

Only few studies investigated the impact of the peri-operative blood transfusion (PBT) rate on both cancerspecific (CSM) and overall mortality (OM) after radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer (Bca). To date, no study has taken into account the possible prognostic role of the pre-operative hemoglobin level (Hb). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of both pre-operative Hb level and PBT rate on CSS and OS of patients who underwent RC. Materiali e metodi The study cohort included 1575 patients treated with RC for BCa between 1990 and 2012 at a single tertiary referral center. Complete clinical, pathological and follow up-data was available for all the patients. Kaplan- Meier …

Topological Devil's staircase in atomic two-leg ladders

2019

Abstract We show that a hierarchy of topological phases in one dimension—a topological Devil’s staircase—can emerge at fractional filling fractions in interacting systems, whose single-particle band structure describes a topological or a crystalline topological insulator. Focusing on a specific example in the BDI class, we present a field-theoretical argument based on bosonization that indicates how the system, as a function of the filling fraction, hosts a series of density waves. Subsequently, based on a numerical investigation of the low-lying energy spectrum, Wilczek–Zee phases, and entanglement spectra, we show that they are symmetry protected topological phases. In sharp contrast to t…

Is vaginal fractional CO2 laser treatment effective in improving overactive bladder symptoms in post-menopausal patients? Preliminary results

2016

To evaluate the role of vaginal fractional CO2 laser treatment in the relief of Overactive Bladder (OAB) symptoms in post-menopausal women.Post-menopausal women who complained of one or more symptoms related to vulvo-vaginal atrophy (VVA), who experienced symptoms of OAB and who underwent vaginal treatment with fractional CO2 laser were enrolled in the study. At baseline (T0) and 30 days post-treatment T1), vaginal status (using Vaginal Health Index - VHI), subjective intensity of VVA symptoms (using a visual analog scale - VAS) and micturition diary were evaluated. OAB symptoms were also assessed using a validated questionnaire.Thirty patients were enrolled. A statistically significant imp…

Difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy and preoperative predictive factors

2021

AbstractLaparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the standard technique for treatment of gallbladder disease. In case of acute cholecystitis we can identify preoperative factors associated with an increased risk of conversion and intraoperative complications. The aim of our study was to detect preoperative laboratory and radiological findings predictive of difficult LC with potential advantages for both the surgeons and patients in terms of options for management. We designed a retrospective case–control study to compare preoperative predictive factors of difficult LC in patients treated in emergency setting between January 2015 and December 2019. We included in the difficult LC group the surge…

Genome-wide Association Study and Meta-Analysis Identify ISL1 as Genome-wide Significant Susceptibility Gene for Bladder Exstrophy

2015

The bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) represents the severe end of the uro-rectal malformation spectrum, and is thought to result from aberrant embryonic morphogenesis of the cloacal membrane and the urorectal septum. The most common form of BEEC is isolated classic bladder exstrophy (CBE). To identify susceptibility loci for CBE, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 110 CBE patients and 1,177 controls of European origin. Here, an association was found with a region of approximately 220kb on chromosome 5q11.1. This region harbors the ISL1 (ISL LIM homeobox 1) gene. Multiple markers in this region showed evidence for association with CBE, including 84 markers with…

Robot-Assisted, Laparoscopic, and Open Radical Cystectomy: Pre-Operative Data of 1400 Patients From The Italian Radical Cystectomy Registry.

2022

The Italian Radical Cystectomy Registry (RIC) is an observational prospective study aiming to understand clinical variables and patient characteristics associated with short- and long-term outcomes among bladder cancer (BC) patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). Moreover, it compares the effectiveness of three RC techniques - open, robotic, and laparoscopic. From 2017 to 2020, 1400 patients were enrolled at one of the 28 centers across Italy. Patient characteristics, as well as preoperative, postoperative, and follow-up (3, 6, 12, and 24 months) clinical variables and outcomes were collected.Preoperatively, it was found that patients undergoing robotic procedures were younger (p.001) a…

The effect of Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin (KLH) on the rat bladder

1977

Immunostimulation with agents such as BCG or KLH may represent an adjuvant therapy in treating patients with bladder cancer. To investigate the effects of direct instillation and injection of KLH into the bladder of sensitized and nonsensitized rats, KLH was injected submucosally into the bladder. Histologically, a marked inflammatory reaction was seen without ulcerations.

Role of the Ha-ras gene in the malignant transformation of rat liver oval cells.

1997

We have shown that the oval cell line OCICDE 22 can be transformed by the highly carcinogenic fiord-region diol epoxides of benzo[c]phenanthrene. Mutational activation of the ras proto-oncogene family has been proposed to be a critical event in the formation of tumors induced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Therefore, we investigated whether in the earlier transformed OCICDE 22 cells any point mutations were detected in the ras proto-oncogene. The results indicate that the malignant transformation of OCICDE 22 cells by the 4 stereoisomeric benzo[c]phenan-threne diol epoxides in vitro is independent of activation of the Ha-ras proto-oncogene. In addition, Northern and Western blot analy…
