. Successful oral litholytic and other non-operative therapies of gallstones require exact determination of the stone components. Since computed tomography (CT) provides highly sensitive measurement of density, we performed a study to evaluate whether CT measurement of stone density allows a prediction of the composition of radiolucent gallstones. Overall, the prevalence of urinary incontinence approaches 55% among women aged over 55 years. Long-term outcomes are of special concern in children after urinary diversion. In a single institution study we evaluated retrospectively the long-term outcomes of urinary diversion in children, in whom the ileocecal segment had been used, in respect to complications of the efferent segment.The Mainz pouch was used in 107 children for continent urinary diversion. Indications were neurogenic bladder (53%, 57/107), exstrophy-epispadias complex (25%, 27/107), malignancy (13%, 14/107), and others (9%, 9/107). From 1967 to 1985, 246 cystectomies for treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder were performed. Perioperative mortality decreased from 15% in the early years to 0% in 1985. Preoperative radiotherapy was not given. Patients who underwent cystectomy immediately following the diagnosis of invasive bladder carcinoma had a significantly better prognosis than those having cystectomy after recurrence of a transurethrally resected invasive carcinoma in spite of identical G and T criteria. Kinins are biologically active peptides that act through specific receptors, B1 and B2. Here we describe the localization of the bradykinin B2 receptor in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells and in the uterus and urinary bladder of rat or human origin. We discuss the suitability of anti-peptide antibodies to assess the tissue distribution of bradykinin B2 receptors.

This review article discusses the medical need for improved medical treatments of overactive bladder syndrome, and the hurdles and research required to address that need. Currently, few overactive bladder syndrome patients stay on long-term treatment, largely because efficacy expectations are not met, and tolerability is considered insufficient for the chronic treatment of a non-life-threatening condition. Therefore, a medical need exists for improved tolerability and, even more importantly, improved efficacy.
