Plagiochasma appendiculatumLehm. & Lindenb. (Marchantiales, Aytoniaceae), a species new to the European bryophyte flora

2005

Abstract The liverwort Plagiochasma appendiculatum Lehm. & Lindenb. is reported for the first time in Europe from Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). The species is described and illustrated and its distribution and ecology are discussed. Plagiochasma appendiculatum differsfromP. rupestre (J. R. Forst. & G. Forst.) Steph., the only species of the genus known at present in Europe, by characters such as the bright green or green-yellowish thallus and the orbicular and obtusescale appendages which are markedly constricted and folded at the base.

Discovery of a Lochkovian flora (Lower Devonian) in the Iberian Peninsula

2011

ABSTRACT The Lower Devonian represents an important episode in plant life history, which was marked by the diversification of land plants. Unfortunately, remains of early Devonian plants in the Iberian Peninsula are scarce. In the present paper, we describe a small assemblage of early land plants from the Lochkovian (Lower Devonian) of the Teruel Province in Spain. The main element consists of Taeniocrada-like sterile stems that are predominandy dichotomous and ribbon-like with a narrow central strand. An unidentified fossil formed by dichotomous axes together with an uncertain globular structure were also observed. This finding increases our knowledge of the palaeogeographical distribution…

Land management impacts on soil properties and initial soil erosion processes in olives and vegetable crops

2020

Abstract This research aims to assess the impacts of soil use management on runoff, soil losses, and their main soil controls in vegetable cropland (CROP), tilled olives (OT), and grass-covered olive orchards (OGC) on Leptosol in Croatia. Soil analysis and rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to quantify runoff (Run), soil, and nutrient losses. Bulk density (BD) was significantly higher at OT plots, in addition to the CROP plots. Water-stable aggregates (WSA), mean weight diameter (MWD), and soil organic matter (OM) were significantly higher in OGC plots compared to the other land uses. Run and soil loss (SL) were significantly higher in CROP and OT plots compared to the OGC plots…

Apatite and clinopyroxene as tracers for metasomatic processes in nepheline clinopyroxenites of Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes in the Ural Mountains,…

2013

Clinopyroxene and apatite are found to trace metasomatic processes in nepheline-bearing clinopyroxenites (tilaites) from the igneous, mafic-ultramafic Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes of Kytlym and Nizhny Tagil, Ural Mountains, Russian Federation. The clinopyroxenites consist predominantly of coarse-grained, partially to totally altered clinopyroxene phenocrysts in a matrix of fine-grained olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and nepheline. Apatite occurs as idiomorphic inclusions (2O-, Na2O-, and Al2O3-bearing fluid. During conversion of the plagioclase, CaO and SiO2 were partitioned into the fluid. Altered areas in the clinopyroxene phenocrysts are characterized by the redistrib…

Multi-temporal tectonic evolution of Capo Granitola and Sciacca foreland transcurrent faults (Sicily channel)

2019

Highlights • Seismic reflection profiles evidence tectonic inversion and active strike-slip faults offshore SW Sicily foreland • Pliocene-Quaternary transpressional inversion of Late Miocene extensional basins • Transpressional fold growth rates were high in Latest Miocene-Pliocene and decreased during Quaternary Joint analysis of high-penetration multi-channel and high-resolution single-channel seismic reflection profiles, calibrated by deep well boreholes, allowed a detailed reconstruction of the Late Miocene to Recent tectonic history of the Capo Granitola and Sciacca fault systems offshore southwestern Sicily. These two fault arrays are part of a regional system of transcurrent faults t…

Scavenging in the realm of senses: smell and vision drive recruitment at carcasses in Neotropical ecosystems

2022

Social information, acquired through the observation of other individuals, is especially relevant among species belonging to the same guild. The unpredictable and ephemeral nature of carrion implies that social mechanisms may be selected among scavenger species to facilitate carcass location and consumption. Here, we apply a survival-modelling strategy to data obtained through the placement and monitoring of carcasses in the field to analyse possible information transmission cascades within a Neotropical scavenger community. Our study highlights how the use of different senses (smell and sight) within this guild facilitates carcass location through the transmission of social information bet…

Effects of high-pressure processing on fungi spores: Factors affecting spore germination and inactivation and impact on ultrastructure.

2020

Food contamination with heat-resistant fungi (HRF), and their spores, is a major issue among fruit processors, being frequently found in fruit juices and concentrates, among other products, leading to considerable economic losses and food safety issues. Several strategies were developed to minimize the contamination with HRF, with improvements from harvesting to the final product, including sanitizers and new processing techniques. Considering consumers' demands for minimally processed, fresh-like food products, nonthermal food-processing technologies, such as high-pressure processing (HPP), among others, are emerging as alternatives to the conventional thermal processing techniques. As no …

Optical sensing responses of CrIIICl(TPP)(H2O)-based coatings obtained by an atmospheric pressure plasma method – Application to the detection of vol…

2014

Food spoilage processes are a considerable concern for both the food industry and the consumer, due to financial, food quality and food safety aspects. A primary issue is the prevention/monitoring of the formation of biogenic and volatile amines, such as occurring in fish and in other microbiologically unstable food items rich in proteins, produced by e.g. oxidative decarboxylation of amino acids. One strategy for their monitoring is the development of films with colorimetric sensing properties that are able to indicate food spoilage. The aim of this investigation was the development of a novel metalloporphyrin-based coating allowing the sensitive detection of typical volatile amines, such …
