Design, construction and operation of the ProtoDUNE-SP Liquid Argon TPC
2022
The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) that was constructed and operated in the CERN North Area at the end of the H4 beamline. This detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), which will be constructed at the Sandford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, U.S.A. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector incorporates full-size components as designed for DUNE and has an active volume of 7 × 6 × 7.2 m3. The H4 beam delivers incident particles with well-measured momenta and high-purity particle identification. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation between 2018 and 2020 demons…
Combined sensitivity of JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA to the neutrino mass ordering
2022
This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of ∆m231 between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a 5σ determination of the neutrino mass orderi…
Eos: conceptual design for a demonstrator of hybrid optical detector technology
2023
Abstract Eos is a technology demonstrator, designed to explore the capabilities of hybrid event detection technology, leveraging both Cherenkov and scintillation light simultaneously. With a fiducial mass of four tons, Eos is designed to operate in a high-precision regime, with sufficient size to utilize time-of-flight information for full event reconstruction, flexibility to demonstrate a range of cutting edge technologies, and simplicity of design to facilitate potential future deployment at alternative sites. Results from Eos can inform the design of future neutrino detectors for both fundamental physics and nonproliferation applications. This paper describes the conceptual design and po…
Radioactivity control strategy for the JUNO detector
2021
JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collabo…

In-flight recoil separators RITU and MARA and the standard detector setups
2023
In-flight recoil separators RITU and MARA at Jyväskylä Accelerator Laboratory are complementary devices to separate the fusion-evaporation residues from the primary beam and other reaction products. The nuclear-structure-research program at Jyväskylä utilizes these separators and the detector setups shared between the separators to identify weak reaction channels and extract nuclear-structure information via decay experiments and in-beam spectroscopic studies. For example the very weak N∼Z nuclei are studied in-beam by using 𝛽-decay tagging method (Tuike scintillator) enhanced with the mass selection (MARA) and charge particle-evaporation veto (JYTube). peerReviewed
Electron spectroscopy with the SAGE spectrometer
2016
A device called the SAGE (Silicon And GErmanium) spectrometer, designed for in-beam electron spectroscopy, is introduced in this work. A detailed description to the technical aspects of the device is given along with several examples of analytical procedures related to work done with the device. The radial ltering method and veto/add-back algorithms are tools for improving the quality of the electron-gamma data whilst the time-gate selection procedure helps in determining absolute internal conversion coe cients without reference points. Two very di erent types of experiments with results obtained from the electron data are introduced and analysed. Coulomb excitation is used to probe 154Sm a…
Euclid preparation : XVIII. The NISP photometric system
2022
Euclid will be the first space mission to survey most of the extragalactic sky in the 0.95–2.02 µm range, to a 5 σ point-source median depth of 24.4 AB mag. This unique photometric dataset will find wide use beyond Euclid’s core science. In this paper, we present accurate computations of the Euclid YE, JE, and HE passbands used by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP), and the associated photometric system. We pay particular attention to passband variations in the field of view, accounting for, among other factors, spatially variable filter transmission and variations in the angle of incidence on the filter substrate using optical ray tracing. The response curves’ cut-on and …
Kohti inklusiivista opettajuutta ja musiikkioppilaitosta
2016
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää Musiikin erityispedagogiikan osaamiskeskittymä (MEOK) -hankkeen täydennyskoulutukseen osallistuneiden musiikkipedagogien näkemyksiä inkluusiosta. Pedagogien näkemyksiä inkluusiosta tarkasteltiin kolmen teeman kautta: asenne erilaisia oppijoita kohtaan, kokemukset täydennyskoulutuksesta inklusiivisen opettajuuden vahvistajana sekä näkemykset musiikkioppilaitoksen tarpeesta kehittyä inklusiiviseksi. Tutkimus on laadullinen fenomenografinen tapaustutkimus, jonka tutkimusmateriaali kerättiin puolistrukturoiduilla yksilöhaastatteluilla. Haastateltavia pedagogeja oli neljä. He työskentelivät kaikki samassa musiikkioppilaitoksessa ja osallistuivat MEOK-t…
