Indacaterol vs tiotropium in COPD patients classified as GOLD A and B
2015
SummaryIntroductionAccording to current GOLD strategy, patients with COPD classified as groups A and B may be treated with inhaled bronchodilators, either long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) or long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA). However, there is little guidance on which class of agent is preferred and a lack of prospective data to differentiate the two.MethodsIn this study, we performed post-hoc analyses of pooled data from two prospective, controlled clinical trials comparing the LABA indacaterol and LAMA tiotropium in 1422 patients with moderate airflow limitation and no history of exacerbations in the previous year. This population fits the definitions of GOLD A and B groups and could …
GOLD 2017 treatment pathways in ‘real life’: An analysis of the DACCORD observational study
2017
Abstract Introduction The 2017 update to the Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) strategy document includes recommendations for treatment intensification or step-down in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), although recognises that limited supporting information is available. DACCORD is an ongoing observational, non-interventional study, recruiting patients following COPD maintenance treatment change or initiation, a subset of whom were receiving a long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) plus a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) fixed-dose combination (FDC) on entry. Since there were no requirements in terms of prior medication (and no washout before commencing LABA/L…
Is seed availability enough to ensure colonization success?
2006
Abstract We tested the hypothesis that seed availability is a limiting factor for plant colonization of road embankments under Mediterranean climate conditions. Experimental sowing on 10 road embankments was carried out to compare the colonization success of plants that successfully colonize the road embankment and species that appear only occasionally in the road embankments. After sowing, we measured plant establishment, biomass production, and reproductive capacity of the species. The species that appear only occasionally in the road embankments had lower emergence rates (l.l ± 0.3%) than species that were successful colonizers (18.8 ± 2.9%). None of the species of the former group survi…
Hydroseeding application on degraded slopes in the southern Mediterranean area (Sicily)
2013
Abstract. Hydroseeding is a technique increasingly used to establish vegetation on degraded areas in order to provide environmental protection. The objective of this article was to evaluate the effectiveness of four different hydroseeding methods (bonded fiber matrix hydroseeding, thick hydroseeding, reinforced hydroseeding plus water retention, and reinforced hydroseeding) on a degraded artificial slope in the southern Mediterranean area determining total vegetation cover, hydroseeding vegetation cover, hydroseeding success index (HSI), natural and hydroseeded vegetation height. The test area does not allow the use of any operating machinery for soil and vegetation management, and the only…
La drammatica
2014
The drammatica is a theatrical declamatory system that has been completely neglected since the dawn of the twentieth century; nevertheless it formed the foundation of the Italian national theatre and played a remarkable role in the history of eighteenth-and-nineteenth-century European theatre. It featured a scale of intonations and gestures which were represented by symbols of notation. Some of those symbols are still preserved and readable in the actors’ prompt books. My identification of the symbols demostrates the skilful craft of nineteenth-century Italian actors; but it also reveals the origins of an emerging resistance to the declamation, especially in the age of naturalism. Some of t…
Captivity and infection by the fungal pathogen batrachochytrium salamandrivorans perturb the amphibian skin microbiome
2019
The emerging fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) is responsible for the catastrophic decline of European salamanders and poses a threat to amphibians globally. The amphibian skin microbiome can influence disease outcome for several host-pathogen systems, yet little is known of its role in Bsal infection. In addition, many experimental in-vivo amphibian disease studies to date have relied on specimens that have been kept in captivity for long periods without considering the influence of environment on the microbiome and how this may impact the host response to pathogen exposure. We characterized the impact of captivity and exposure to Bsal on the skin bacterial and fung…
Monochamus spp. un citu skujkoku saproksilo vaboļu (Coleoptera) sugu sabiedrības un to ievākšanas metodikas efektivitātes novērtējums kaitīgo organis…
2018
Kopš 1999. gadā Portugālē ieviesās priežu koksnes nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, Eiropā Monochamus ģints koskngraužu nozīmība kā meža kaitēkļiem ievērojami pieauga, jo tie ir šīs nematodes galvenie vektori. B. xylophilus izraisa priežu vīti, kuras dēļ iet bojā liels koku daudzums. Latvijā nav pētīta Monochamus ģints sastopamība un feromonu lamatu efektivitāte, kas ir svarīga informācija, ja nākotnē būs vajadzība kontrolēt B. xylophilus riska zonās – teritorijās, kurās ir augstāka varbūtība kaitīgā organisma ieviešanās riskam. Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot Monochamus ģints koksngraužu sastopamību Latvijā riska zonu vietās un feromonu lamatu efektivitāti skujkoku saproksilo vaboļu ķeršanai…
Redescription and phylogenetic analysis of the type species of the genus Panagrellus Thorne, 1938 (Rhabditida, Panagrolaimidae), P. pycnus Thorne, 19…
2021
Abstract The identity of Panagrellus pycnus, the type species of the genus Panagrellus, is discussed after studying specimens from a cultured population collected in Italy that fits the original material of the species. A new characterization is consequently provided as follows: body 0.93–1.32 mm long, lip region continuous with the adjoining body, stoma with gymnostom very reduced, pharynx with not swollen metacorpus, neck 161–203 µm long, excretory pore at level of the metacorpus, post-vulval uterine sac 99–162 µm long or 2.6–3.8 times as long as the body diameter divided in a short tubular proximal part and a long swollen distal part, vulva post-equatorial (V = 63–69), female tail conica…
Apoptotic activity of isoespintanol derivatives in human polymorphonuclear cells
2016
Background: Inflammation is a complex physiopathologic response to different stimuli. Recently, some pharmacological strategies have been proposed that could be used for resolution of inflammation by enhancing apoptosis of inflammatory cells. Objectives: To study in vitro apoptotic activity of isoespintanol [ISO] and of two semi-synthetic derivatives, bromide isoespintanol [BrI] and demethylated isoespintanol [DMI], in human polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells. Methods: PMN were exposed to the different concentrations of ISO, BrI and DMI for 30 min in phosphate-buffered saline pH 7.4 containing 1 mg/mL glucose, 0.4 mM Mg2+, and 1.20 mM Ca2+. Viability was assessed by dimethylthiazol diphenyl tetr…
Economic impact of mepolizumab in uncontrolled severe eosinophilic asthma, in real life
2021
Abstract Background and aims Severe asthma is burdened by frequent exacerbations and use of oral corticosteroids (OCS) which worsen patients’ health and increase healthcare spending. Aim of this study was to assess the clinical and economic effect of adding mepolizumab (MEP) for the treatment of these patients. Methods Patients >18 years old, referred to 8 asthma clinics, starting MEP between May 2017 and December 2018, were enrolled and followed-up for 12 months. Information in the 12 months before mepolizumab were collected retrospectively. The evaluation parameters included: OCS use, number of exacerbations/hospitalizations, concomitant therapies, comorbidity, and annual number of workin…
