Insights from a Computer Simulation Model of a Landslide Disaster

2015

Disasters do not follow scripts and the management of disasters requires that responders act as "emergent organizations". We argue that a computer simulation model of the management of a major landslide suggests a disequilibrium-experimenting-emergence process in terms of feedback loops (Performance adjustment, Cognitive load causes errors, Communication mismatch causes errors, and Learning). Arguably, improvement of the drivers of such feedback could help improve the management of disasters.

Displacement Evolution of a Large Landslide in a Highly Fissured Clay

2019

The paper presents an analysis and modelling of the reactivation mechanism of a large landslide caused by rainfall, located in Cerda (Sicily, Italy). The study is based on data collected by means of a field investigation, carried out in order to assess the geotechnical properties of the involved material, and a three-year monitoring programme implemented to measure rain and pore water pressures as well as deep and superficial displacements. Three distinct landslides, evolving at variable rates in different directions, were recognized within the overall landslide area. The data clearly show the mechanical role of pore water pressures in the stability of the slope and point out the dependence…

Rainfall Induced Landslides in Puerto Rico

2009

Landslides are a major geologic hazard in the United States, typically triggered by rainfall, earthquakes, volcanoes and human activity. Rainfall-induced landslides are the most common type in the island of Puerto Rico, with one or two large events per year. We performed an island-wide determination of static landslide susceptibility and hazard assessment as well as dynamic modeling of rainfall-induced shallow landslides in a particular hydrologic basin. Based on statistical analysis of past landslides, we determined that reliable prediction of the susceptibility to landslides is strongly dependent on the resolution of the digital elevation model (DEM) employed and the reliability of the ra…

A Landslide in Overconsolidated Clays that Has Involved an Important Road of Access to an Internal Mountain Town

2019

The paper presents a case study on the interference of a landslide in overcosolidated clays, triggered in autumn 2004 - winter 2005 by high pore water pressures, on the usability of an important provincial road of an internal town. In the period of 2004–2019 the landslide suffered several mobilisations that led to temporary closures of the road and continuous interventions on the roadway for its use, that caused significant inconvenience for the population and damage to the commercial, sanitary, touristic, agricultural and other activities. In 2018 a study has allowed to identify the kinematic characters of the landslide and the depth of the sliding surface. The study has confirmed that the…

Cyber-Security in Digital Metering Value Chain for Mountain Landslide Warning

2021

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) are initiating a digitalization process that involves the use of a digital metering value chain and cloud computing. The main objective of this study is to investigate how NVE can ensure cyber-security in digital meters and the cloubased metering value chain for mountain landslide warning. The study is based on a qualitative approach including methods like document analysis and semi structured interviews used as input to a risk analysis based on the ISO 31000 standard. The risk analysis covered three different scenarios from NVE. Those three scenarios were internal, external Norwegian, and transnational value chains for metering lan…

Computation of run-up heights for landslide-generated tsunami. An attempt of hazard assessment in the North Sicily continental margin

2014

The North Sicily continental margin is a very active region located in a transitional area between the Sicilian- Maghrebian Chain to the south and the southern Tyrrhenian Sea to the north. Strong seismicity, active tectonics and volcanism, fluid escape, high sediment supply and widespread mass movements exposed this region to marine geohazards, with a potential for tsunami generation (e.g. Messina 1908, Stromboli 2004 events). In recent years, high resolution swath mapping and high resolution to high penetration seismic reflection profiles have been collected during several oceanographic cruises, in the frame of the MaGIC and CARG projects. Morphobatymetric and geoseismic analysis evidenced…

A scenario-based assessment of the tsunami hazard in palermo, northern sicily, and the southern tyrrhenian sea

2020

Palermo is a populous city situated on the northern coast of Sicily, bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea. This central part of the Mediterranean Sea features dramatic bathymetry, numerous subaqueous landslides and is also the epicentre to many subaqueous earthquakes. As such, the region is an area prone to tsunamis. This investigation uses the Cornell Multi-Grid Coupled Tsunami (COMCOT) tsunami modelling package to simulate five near-field landslides, and five near-field earthquakes regarded as worst-case credible scenarios for Palermo. The seismic simulations produced waves on a very small scale, the largest being c. 5 cm at its maximum height, and none of the earthquake-generated tsunami waves…
