Foreign language anxiety : the case of young learners of English in Swedish primary classrooms

Although foreign language anxiety is a widely studied construct assumed to develop from negative experiences of language instruction, few researchers have focused on young learners in this regard. This multiple case study investigates levels and triggers of language anxiety in Swedish primary classrooms under rather favorable learning conditions with a supportive, non-competitive atmosphere, and without formal knowledge requirements or grades. Uttalet i läroböcker i svenska som andraspråk från begriplighetsperspektiv

I denna artikel studerar jag hur uttal presenteras i finska gymnasieläroböcker (n=10) i svenska som andra språk. Syftet är att undersöka vilka uttalsdrag som tas upp i läroböckerna och relationen mellan dessa drag och begriplighet. Metoden som jag använder är kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Prosodiska drag har ansetts ha en stor betydelse för begriplighet. Vad det gäller svenska är speciellt satsrytm viktig. Analysen visar dock att uppmärksamheten oftast fästs vid enskilda segment (språkljud) och ord. W artykule podjęty został temat rangi szkolnego nauczania języka polskiego jako ojczystego na tle uczenia języków obcych. Stwierdzono, że nie tylko w polityce językowo-edukacyjnej państwa polskiego, ale także w przekonaniach społecznych i działaniach uczelni wyższych widoczne jest preferowanie języków obcych i niedoszacowanie potrzeb rozwijania kompetencji językowej i komunikacyjnej w zakresie języka polskiego. Tämän kvantitatiivisen proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia vanhempien tietämystä kielikylpyopetuksesta sekä heidän halukkuuttaan tarjota sitä englanninkielisenä lapsilleen. Tarkoitus oli selvittää, tietävätkö vanhemmat kielikylvystä entuudestaan ja olisivatko he kiinnostuneita laittamaan lapsensa kielikylpyopetukseen. Tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin myös vanhempien käsityksiä siitä, miten kielikylpy vaikuttaa esim. kielelliseen kehitykseen tai muiden aineiden oppimiseen. Tutkielma tarjosi vanhemmille kahta kielikylpymallia, osittaisen ja totaalisen, joista vanhemmat saivat valita mieluisemman. Tarinat ja tarinankerronta ovat keskeisiä käsitteitä kielen tutkimuksessa ja kielten ilmenemisessä jokapäiväisessä elämässä. Rakenteena tarinat näkyvät paitsi kulttuurissamme ja historiassamme, myös sosiaalisissa kanssakäymisissämme ja siinä miten jäsennämme tietoa. Tarinoilla ja tarinankerronalla on myös perinteisesti ollut keskeinen rooli opetuksessa jossa niiden käytön on havaittu tuovan monia hyötyjä. Investigating Syntactic Complexity in EFL Learners' Writing across Common European Framework of Reference Levels A1, A2, and B1

Abstract The study investigates the linguistic basis of Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels in English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing. Specifically, it examines whether CEFR levels can be distinguished with reference to syntactic complexity (SC) and whether the results differ between two groups of EFL learners with different first languages (Sindhi and Finnish). This sheds light on the linguistic comparability of the CEFR levels across L1 groups. Informants were teenagers from Pakistan (N = 868) and Finland (N = 287) who wrote the same argumentative essay that was rated on a CEFR-based scale.
