From canon to chaos management : blogging as a learning tool in a modern Finnish literature course
2015
This article is based on the teaching experiment implemented in summer 2013 in a modern Finnish literature course organised by the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) and the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre. In order to break away from the traditional conception of literature and text, students’ independent blogging was chosen as the final course assignment instead of a traditional final project. Our aim has been to determine what blogging as an activity can add to second-language learning (i.e. learning the language in a country where it is spoken as a native language) in the context of modern Finnish literature. Our special interest is how new learning environments and approa…

The goal of this study is to analyze and compare aspects of language learning games in the context of Finnish and Hungarian high-school teaching of German as a foreign language (GFL). First, the practices of using games in GFL are investigated. Secondly, the subjective theories of teachers on language learning games are analyzed. Thirdly, the differences between the Finnish and Hungarian contexts are discussed. The data for this study was gathered with a written questionnaire (48 Finnish, 49 Hungarian GFL teachers) and through semi-standardized interviews (8 Finnish, 5 Hungarian GFL teachers). In addition, Hungarian and Finnish national curricula are analyzed. Through triangulation, both qua…
Learning English through video games : Finnish learners' experiences
2018
Peterson, 2013; Reinhardt & Sykes, 2012).

Students’ choice of language and initial motivation for studying Japanese at the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre
2015
Elective language courses, particularly those starting from the beginner level, constitute their own special group within the communication and language course offerings of universities. The elementary courses of less commonly taught languages (LCTL), such as Japanese, provide students with the opportunity to acquire, among other benefits, a proficiency that distinguishes them from other job applicants. Ordinary language skills, commonly limited to English only, are today regarded as the default and not as any unique international asset. Even partial knowledge of a less commonly taught language and culture broadens one’s worldview and increases cultural understanding. The many years of expe…
Languages as objects of learning: language learning as a case of multilingualism
2011
This paper considers multilingualism from the point of view of language learning and teaching. We discuss the ‘monological’ thinking in linguistics and in the research of language learning and teaching and argue that the monological stand, more often than not, also embeds a monolingual bias. As an alternative to monologism, we discuss dialogical notion of language and argue that this inherently involves a multilingual stand. peerReviewed
Building self through foreign language learning : a case study of four adult language learners' emerging identities
2015
2003
This article discusses written narratives about foreign language learning. The stories were collected in a contest organised by KVS Foundation (Kansanvalistusseura), a Finnish organisation for adult education. Over 500 texts were sent for the contest, representing writers of both sexes, various language backgrounds and many professions. The age of writers varied from 8 to 80. In this article we discuss the nature of the data and the creation of a data base. Some preliminary observations are reported and a case study discussed. The relation between the academic and everyday views of language learning is also dealt with. peerReviewed
