The aim of this study is to discuss the needs of learners who stutter (LWS) in the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning based on their levels of anxiety, and their experiences as individuals who stutter in the process of learning this language. This article presents a triple case study of African immigrants’ beliefs about Finnish language learning and support of the work community in the cleaning industry. Cleaning does not require a high language proficiency and it is therefore a typical first job for immigrants, a so-called entrance job. The theoretical framework of the study combines dialogical and sociocultural perspectives on language learning. Learners’ beliefs about work-related affordances and scaffolding are analysed using a dialogical analysis of beliefs. Enjoyment is among the achievement emotions encountered in school and university settings. While often identified with a sense of belonging not necessarily connected with learning (Lumby, 2011), foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in SLA has been found to correlate with teachers’ professional and affective skills, and the existence of a supportive peer group. Students’ perspectives on English medium instruction within higher education. Exploring gender differences in Norway and Finland

This study aims to explore gender differences in students’ perspectives on language use within higher education (HE), using data from a survey distributed to students at two universities in Norway and Finland. Analysing responses concerning language use in HE, I found that most students were positively inclined towards English medium instruction (EMI). However, while there in both countries were only small differences in attitudes towards EMI between male and female students, in Finland, female students were less confident in their English skills than male students were. Artikkelissa kuvaamme lyhyesti suomalaisen viittomakielen taitotasokuvainten ja arviointikriteereiden kehittämistä ja siihen liittyvää validointiprosessia Soveltavan kielentutkimuksen keskuksessa. Suomalaisessa viittomakielessä ei aiemmin ole ollut yhtenäisiä, teoreettisesti määriteltyjä kuvauksia viittomakielen taidon kehittymisestä. Nyt kehitetyissä taitotasokuvaimissa ja arviointikriteereissä viittomakielen taito on kuvattu kuusiportaisella asteikolla kolmessa eri osataidossa: viittomakielen ymmärtämisessä, viittomakielen itsenäisessä tuottamisessa ja viittomakielisessä keskustelussa. Digitaalisen koealustan pilotointi Yleisissä kielitutkinnoissa

Yleiset kielitutkinnot ovat siirtymässä asteittain digitaaliseen muotoon. Tässä artikkelissa esitellään lyhyesti tätä muutosprosessia sekä kerrotaan maahanmuuttajille järjestetystä digitaalisen koealustan pilotoinnista ja sen tuloksista. Pilotti toteutettiin Lahdessa kotoutumiskoulutukseen osallistuvien maahanmuuttajien kielitaidon testauksella. Heidän kielitaitonsa vaihteli kielten yleiseurooppalaisen viitekehyksen tasojen A1 ja B1 välillä. Pilotissa testattiin digitaalisen alustan toimintaa ja käytettävyyttä koulutustaustaltaan hyvin heterogeenisella osallistujajoukolla.
