Retrospective Cohort Study of Cancer Mortality at the Minsk Leather Tannery

2006

The cohort of 768 workers who were actively employed for a minimum of 6 months and died was retrospectively followed from 1 January 1953 to 31 December 2000. There were 328 women and 440 men observed. Proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) were calculated using the Minsk-city population mortality proportions to generate expected numbers. The significant excess of pancreatic cancer (PMR=366%; 95%CI=134-800) and melanoma and skin cancer (PMR=455%; 95% CI=123-1,164) in women-workers of Dyeing and stuffing workshops was shown. The significantly high mortality from pancreatic cancer among Dyeing and stuffing workshops' female workers hired and discharged between 1958 and 1984 (PMR=1,024%; 95% CI=…

Food supplementation reveals constraints and adaptability of egg quality in the magpie Pica pica

2015

Differences in the deposition of limited maternal resources to eggs can reflect the optimal allocation to manipulate offspring phenotype, or constraints caused by maternal condition. We examined multiple maternal substances transferred to eggs in the magpie Pica pica to test the hypothesis that certain substances represent constraint and some optimal allocation. We did this by supplementary feeding magpies prior to egg-laying and then comparing the effect of food on maternal substances in conjunction with laying order relative to a control group. Certain substances such as carotenoids, immunoglobulins and avidin responded positively to food supplementation, whereas others, such as testoste…

A statistical model for predicting the inter-annual variability of birch pollen abundance in Northern and North-Eastern Europe

2018

The paper suggests a methodology for predicting next-year seasonal pollen index (SPI, a sum of daily-mean pollen concentrations) over large regions and demonstrates its performance for birch in Northern and North-Eastern Europe. A statistical model is constructed using meteorological, geophysical and biological characteristics of the previous year). A cluster analysis of multi-annual data of European Aeroallergen Network (EAN) revealed several large regions in Europe, where the observed SPI exhibits similar patterns of the multi-annual variability. We built the model for the northern cluster of stations, which covers Finland, Sweden, Baltic States, part of Belarus, and, probably, Russia and…

Modeling temporal and spatial colony‐site dynamics in a long‐lived seabird

2003

We studied the determinants of colony site dynamics in Audouin's gull, Larus audouinii, breeding in a small archipelago of the western Mediterranean. Data on island occupation were available for a series of 25 years, since first colonization of the archipelago in 1973. Group behavior was studied in relation to the components of dispersal: permanence or abandonment (extinction) on an island previously occupied and permanence or occupation (colonization) of another island. Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) were used to identify the relative contribution of each explanatory variable to the probability of colony abandonment. Gulls showed a low probability (3%) of abandoning one of the isl…

Prostate cancer incidence and mortality in the Baltic states, Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine

2019

BackgroundProstate cancer incidence varies internationally largely attributable to differences in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) use. The aim of this study was to provide the most recent detailed international epidemiological comparison of prostate cancer incidence and mortality in six north-eastern European countries (Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Russian Federation and Ukraine).MethodsThe number of incident prostate cancer cases was obtained from the countries national cancer registries. Prostate cancer mortality and corresponding population data were extracted from the WHO Mortality Database. Age-specific and age-standardised incidence and mortality rates were calculated (Eur…

Helminth Communities in Audouin's Gulls, Larus audouinii from Chafarinas Islands (Western Mediterranean)

1999

A survey of intestinal helminth communities of Audouin's s gulls Larus audouinii, from their breeding colonies in Chafarinas Islands, western Mediterranean, Spain was conducted to determine the abundance and species diversity of intestinal parasites of these birds. The sample of 58 gulls harbored intestinal helminth infracommunities composed of species that are gull generalists, including the digeneans Cardiocephalus longicollis, Knipowitschiatrema nicolai, Condylocotyla pilodora, and Aporchis massiliensis, and the cestode Tetrabothrius cylindraceus. Two nematodes are waterfowl generalists (Cosmocephalus obvelatus and Paracuaria adunca), whereas the digenean Acanthotrema armata is an Audoui…

Ring species – Do they exist in birds?

2007

Abstract According to current theory, the splitting of a single species into two is best observed by a ring of intergrading populations which occupy a ring-shaped distribution area and whose terminal populations not only meet but overlap and co-occur without or with only little hybridization. The three most discussed examples in birds are revisited here. The great tit complex ( Parus major s. l.) turned out to be an assemblage of four subspecies groups forming a secondary ring of population. The herring gull/lesser black-backed gull complex ( Larus argentatus s. l.) forms a circumpolar circle of intergrading populations, but lacks the crucial cornerstone, the geographical overlap. The green…

Ķīnas attiecības ar Baltkrieviju un Ķīnas attiecības ar Poliju 2006.-2016.g.: salīdzinājums

2017

This Master thesis shows the relations between Belarus and China in comparison to the relations between Poland and China. In the first chapter the author describes the political and economic situation in the three countries. The second chapter states about the political relations between Poland – the People’s Republic of China, Belarus and China, the New Silk Road and 16+1 formats. The third chapter covers the topic of the economic relations between the states. In the chapter no. 4 the author writes about the military cooperation issues. The last chapter shows the future plans and recommendations for the further cooperation.

Odpamiętywanie przeszłości. Historia Białorusi w powieściach Uładzimira Karatkieviča

2020

The main goal of U. Karatkevič’s work has always been an attempt to revive and strengthen the sense of national identity of Belarusians. There was no writer in Belarusian literature who devoted all his work to the history of his own nation. In his works, the writer described the ups and downs of Belarusians, showed their attempts to achieve independence, shaped in his reader the basis of Belarusian national identity. In the 1950s and 1960s in the USSR, it was not easy to promote the true history of Belarus, beauty Belarusian language and Belarusian national identity. Karatkevič was often stigmatized and punished for his actions in this field. The article presents the influence of the writer…
