Cell and tissue response to nanotextured Ti6Al4V and Zr implants using high-speed femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures

2019

In this paper, the effect of femtosecond laser nanotexturing of surfaces of Ti6Al4V and Zr implants on their biological compatibility is presented and discussed. Highly regular and homogeneous nanostructures with sub-micrometer period were imprinted on implant surfaces. Surfaces were morphologically and chemically investigated by SEM and XPS. HDFa cell lines were used for toxicity and cell viability tests, and subcutaneous implantation was applied to characterize tissue response. HDFa proliferation and in vivo experiments evidenced the strong influence of the surface topography compared to the effect of the surface elemental composition (metal or alloy). The effect of protein adsorption fro…

Phased laser diode array permits selective excitation of ultrasonic guided waves in coated bone-mimicking tubes

2017

This paper validates simulation predictions, which state that specific modes could be enhanced in quantitative ultrasonic bone testing. Tunable selection of ultrasonic guided wave excitation is useful in non-destructive testing since it permits the mediation of energy into diagnostically useful modes while reducing the energy mediated into disturbing contributions. For instance, it is often challenging to distinguish and extract the useful modes from ultrasound signals measured in bone covered by a soft tissue. We show that a laser diode array can selectively excite ultrasound in bone mimicking phantoms. A fiber-coupled diode array (4 elements) illuminated two solid tubes (2-3mm wall thickn…

Expanding Two-Photon Intravital Microscopy to the Infrared by Means of Optical Parametric Oscillator

2010

Chronic inflammation in various organs, such as the brain, implies that different subpopulations of immune cells interact with the cells of the target organ. To monitor this cellular communication both morphologically and functionally, the ability to visualize more than two colors in deep tissue is indispensable. Here, we demonstrate the pronounced power of optical parametric oscillator (OPO)-based two-photon laser scanning microscopy for dynamic intravital imaging in hardly accessible organs of the central nervous and of the immune system, with particular relevance for long-term investigations of pathological mechanisms (e.g., chronic neuroinflammation) necessitating the use of fluorescent…

Optical fiber diffusive tip designs for medical laser-lightguide delivery systems

1994

Medical laser radiation delivery instruments with diffusive tips on the distal ends of plastic-clad silica optical fibers have been designed, tested, and manufactured. The instruments are optimized for endoscopic, therapeutic, dermatologic and surgical laser treatment. The diffusive tips provide radial, cylindrical and aside-conical spatial distributions of the output radiation. Optical schemes concerning each type of the tip and the corresponding spatial distribution functions of the output radiation are presented and analyzed. Designs of the lightguide instruments for surgical and dermatological procedures demanding local high-power laser irradiation are also discussed.

Mid-infrared 2000-nm bandwidth supercontinuum generation in suspended-core microstructured Sulfide and Tellurite optical fibers

2012

International audience; In this work, we report the experimental observation of supercontinua generation in two kinds of suspended-core microstructured soft-glass optical fibers. Low loss, highly nonlinear, tellurite and As2S3 chalcogenide fibers have been fabricated and pumped close to their zero-dispersion wavelength in the femtosecond regime by means of an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a Ti:Sapphire laser. When coupled into the fibers, the femtosecond pulses result in 2000-nm bandwidth supercontinua reaching the Mid-Infrared region and extending from 750 nm to 2.8 mu m in tellurite fibers and 1 mu m to 3.2 mu m in chalcogenide fibers, respectively.

Theoretical study of cascade laser in erbium-doped chalcogenide glass fibers

2010

International audience; A theoretical investigation of an innovative cascade laser source is performed. The main goal of the work is the design of a continuous-wave (CW) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) laser, based on an erbium-doped chalcogenide glass. Due to the comparable lifetimes of the 4I13/2, 4I11/2 and 4I9/2 erbium energy levels, the simultaneous emissions at the wavelengths close to 2.7 μm and 4.5 μm are obtained with a pump wavelength close to 806 nm (direct pumping into the level 4I9/2). This scheme could be useful to develop high efficiency, high beam-quality and compact Near-IR and Mid-IR oscillators with single-mode output for applications not only in surgery but also in spectros…

Actively mode-locked all-fiber laser by 5 MHz transmittance modulation of an acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter

2018

Active mode-locking of an all-fiber ring laser by transmittance modulation of an in-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF) is reported. Cavity loss modulation is achieved by full acousto-optic mode re-coupling cycle induced by standing flexural acoustic waves. The modulator permits the implementation of 28 dB of nonresonant light suppression, 1.4 nm of modulation bandwidth, 74% of modulation depth and 4.11 dB of optical loss in a 72.5 cm-long all-fiber configuration. The effects of the modulated AOTBF on the laser performance are investigated. Transform-limited optical pulses of 8.8 ps temporal width and 6.0 W peak power were obtained at 4.87 MHz repetition rate.

Time-domain fiber laser hydrogen sensor.

2004

We report a novel scheme for a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor based on an erbium-doped fiber laser with a palladium-coated tapered fiber within the laser cavity. The tapered fiber acts as a hydrogen-sensing element. When the sensing element is exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere, its attenuation decreases, changing the cavity losses and leading to a modification of the laser transient. The hydrogen concentration is obtained by simple measurement of the buildup time of the laser. This technique translates the measurement of hydrogen concentration into the time domain, and it can be extended to many intensity-based fiber sensors. Relative variations in the buildup time of up to 55% at an increase o…
