Prospective study of the 532 nm laser (KTP) versus diode laser 980 nm in the resection of hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the resection of hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa comparing the 532nm laser (KTP), versus diode 980nm laser, considering pain, scarring, inflammation and drug consumption that occurred postoperatively with each lasers. Material and Methods A prospective study of consecutive series of 20 patients in two groups that presents hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa. C- and Aδ-fiber components of heat-evoked cerebral potentials in healthy human subjects

Feedback-controlled laser heat was used to stimulate the hairy skin of the hand dorsum and forearm, and heat-evoked cerebral potentials were recorded at midline (Fz, Cz, Pz) and temporal (T3, T4) scalp positions. Based on data from primary afferent electrophysiology a stimulus level (40 degrees C) was chosen, which is above C-fiber heat threshold, but clearly below A delta-nociceptor heat threshold in order to excite selectively C-fibers without concomitant excitation of A delta-fibers. Inward currents in primary nociceptive neurons of the rat and pain sensations in humans elicited by infrared diode laser pulses

Radiant heat is often used to study nociception in vivo. We now used infrared radiation generated by a diode laser stimulator (wavelength 980 nm) to investigate transduction mechanisms for noxious heat stimuli in acutely dissociated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of rats in vitro. The laser stimulator offered the unique opportunity to test whether the same stimuli also elicit pain sensations in humans. Intraocular pressure after excimer laser myopic refractive surgery

The aim of this study was to determine whether intraocular pressure (IOP), as measured by Goldmann applanation or non-contact tonometry, shows systematic changes in patients who have undergone photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). IOP was measured by central Goldmann and non-contact tonometry in 54 patients pre and post-PRK, and in 43 patients pre- and post-LASIK. An interval of 12 months was allowed after surgery. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of high-frequency (HF) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left primary motor cortex (M1) on subjective pain and evoked responses induced by laser stimulation (LEPs) of the contralateral hand and supraorbital zone in a cohort of migraine patients without aura during the inter-critical phase, and to compare the effects with those of non-migraine healthy controls. The cortical potentials evoked by cutaneous application of a laser stimulus (laser evoked potentials, LEP) often include potentials in the primary somatic sensory cortex (S1), which may be located within the subdivisions of S1 including Brodmann areas 3A, 3B, 1, and 2. Effect of luminance on photopic visual acuity in the presence of laser speckle

Visual acuity in coherent and incoherent light has been determined by using square-wave gratings of 100% contrast. Luminance was varied from 3 to 400 cd/m2. Coherent illumination resulted in a 40% loss of visual acuity. This is probably due to the masking effect of coherent spatial noise (speckle). However, the most interesting finding is the change in shape of the photopic visual-acuity-luminance function. With coherent illumination, the function is vertically displaced and of a different gradient. An increase in luminance produces a decrease in visual acuity.
