This research deals with the evolution of two of the main ciuitates of the Lugdunensis prima province. It explores their territorial organisation, social and economic structures between the emergence of the Gallic Empire (260 AD) and the end of the kingdom of the Burgundians (530 AD).After tackling the methodological, archeological and historical issues raised by the study of the two ciuitates, it focuses on the city of Autun, on its small neighbouring towns (including Chalon), rural areas and religious practices. 1° In Limousin, our knowledge of ancient monumentalfuneral architecture has been given a new impetus forresearch during the past fifteen years thanks to the inventoryof large-stone blocks reused in civil and religious constructionsor even in later funeral arrangements.2° It is from this standpoint that the Châteauponsac sitehas been included where, in an urban landscape, a largeconcentration of examples of ancient architecture areconserved.
