Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Low Subcondylar Fractures of Mandible Through High Cervical Transmasseteric Anteroparotid Approach

2009

Purpose The aim of the present study was to evaluate the functional and radiologic results of low subcondylar fracture fixation with modus TCP plates (Medartis, Basel, Switzerland) using a high cervical transmasseteric anteroparotid approach. Materials and Methods A prospective study was designed, enrolling all minimum-aged 15-year-old echomorphology patients presenting with displaced low subcondylar fracture with occlusion disturbances during a 41-month period. All fractures were fixed with modus TCP plates using high cervical transmasseteric anteroparotid approach. All patients underwent immediate physiotherapy and a 6-week liquid and semiliquid feeding period. Clinical and radiologic exa…

Intraoperative C-arm CT imaging in angular stable plate osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures

2013

The purpose of this study was to analyze the practicability and benefit of intraoperative C-arm computed tomography (CT) imaging in volar plate osteosynthesis of unstable distal radius fractures. During a 1 year period, intraoperative three dimensional (3D) imaging with the ARCADIS Orbic 3D was performed in addition to standard fluoroscopy in 51 cases. The volar angular stable plate oesteosyntheses were analyzed intraoperatively and, if necessary, improved immediately. The duration of the scan and radiation exposure dose were measured. On average, performance of the scan and analysis of the CT dataset took 6.7 minutes. In 31.3% of the surgeries a misplacement of screws was detected and cor…

Childhood methylphenidate treatment of ADHD and response to affective stimuli

2009

Neural correlates of emotional dysregulation in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and persisting influence of Methylphenidate (MPH) still remain insufficiently understood. Decreased activation in the subgenual cingulate and the ventral striatum were found during the perception of positive and negative affective pictures in drug-naïve males with ADHD during childhood (n=10). Males with ADHD during childhood treated with MPH (n=10) did not show any significant differences compared to healthy controls (n=10). Further prospective studies need to clarify direct and indirect mechanisms of MPH treatment that may contribute to emotional processing, which is dysfunctional in males with…

Verbal suppression and strategy use: a role for the right lateral prefrontal cortex?

2015

Verbal initiation, suppression and strategy generation/use are cognitive processes widely held to be supported by the frontal cortex. The Hayling Test was designed to tap these cognitive processes within the same sentence completion task. There are few studies specifically investigating the neural correlates of the Hayling Test but it has been primarily used to detect frontal lobe damage. This study investigates the components of the Hayling Test in a large sample of patients with unselected focal frontal (n = 60) and posterior (n = 30) lesions. Patients and controls (n = 40) matched for education, age and sex were administered the Hayling Test as well as background cognitive tests. The sta…

Effects of Particulate Matter on the Incidence of Respiratory Diseases in the Pisan Longitudinal Study

2020

The current study aimed at assessing the effects of exposure to Particulate Matter (PM) on the incidence of respiratory diseases in a sub-sample of participants in the longitudinal analytical epidemiological study in Pisa, Italy. Three hundred and five subjects living at the same address from 1991 to 2011 were included. Individual risk factors recorded during the 1991 survey were considered, and new cases of respiratory diseases were ascertained until 2011. Average PM10 and PM2.5 exposures (&micro

Metastatic instability at the proximal end of the femur

1994

A retrospective study was performed of the surgical treatment of metastatic lesions of the proximal femur in 50 patients. In 25 consecutive cases a megaprosthesis was implanted; compound plate osteosynthesis was performed in another 25 consecutive patients. Indications for surgical treatment were pathological fractures or, for prophylactic treatment, lesions of the femoral cortex exceeding 2.5 cm in diameter or affecting half the diameter of the bone or more. In all patients capable of walking preoperatively mobility was regained. Immediate full weight-bearing stability was obtained in all patients. Group analysis showed that the functional rating of the hip joint was unchanged, i.e., good …

Socio-economic and other correlates of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus seroprevalence among older adults in Sicily.

2009

The virus that causes Kaposi sarcoma, KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV, also known as human herpesvirus 8) has an unusual distribution and poorly characterized modes of transmission. To clarify these issues, socio-demographic correlates of KSHV seroprevalence were examined in a population-based study. In 1,154 randomly sampled adults (aged 32- 92, mean 71 years) throughout Sicily, KSHV antibodies were detected with four assays and a conservative algorithm. Seroprevalence was re-weighted to the population. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (OR, CI) from multivariate logistic regression were used to estimate associations of seroprevalence with interview data. KSHV seroprevalence was 8.…

Inhibition of thromboxane biosynthesis by triflusal in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

2004

Abstract Triflusal is an antiplatelet drug related to aspirin, with different pharmacological properties and a lower haemorrhagic risk. We aimed at comparing their effects on platelet and endothelial activation in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In a randomized, double-blind, parallel group study, we compared the effects of three daily regimens (300, 600, and 900mg) of triflusal, and aspirin (100mg/day) on urinary 11-dehydro-thromboxane (TX)B 2 , index of in vivo platelet activation, ex vivo platelet function using the analyzer PFA-100, plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF), P-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and serum nitrite a…

Long-term results of the use of silicone sheets after diskectomy in the temporomandibular joint: clinical, radiographic and histopathologic findings

1999

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term results of a group of patients who had the disk of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) removed and permanently replaced by a silicone sheet. The study group comprised 48 patients, treated in the period from 1983 to 1993. In eight patients, the implants had to be removed after an average interval of 5.6 years and they were submitted for histopathological examination. Twenty-five of the 40 patients with silastic implants in place, and five of the 8 patients who had their implants removed, were available for long-term follow-up (mean interval of 7.0 years, SD 2.8 years). Clinical function was rated according to the Helkimo Dysfunction In…
