2018

[full article, abstract in English; abstract in Lithuanian] In this paper the author continues to explore the translation scene in 20th century Latvia (Veisbergs 2016a). The period under discussion covers 1945–1953, the years of Stalin’s rule after WWII until his death in 1953. The translation situation is described by discussing nationalisation and centralisation of publishers, book liquidation, censorship, ideologisation and politicisation, russification, Latvian émigré translations and other aspects of importance in an attempt to present the translation scene of the period from different angles. At the end of the article an extensive list of references is provided that can serve as an in…

SYNCRETISM OF THE SEASONAL RITUALS IN THE LATGALIAN BORDERLAND

2010

<p>German written sources are representing information on masquerade traditions in Latvia already in the 17th century - Latvian mask parades in 1636 are described by the Kurzeme and Zemgale Superintendent, P. Einhorn. (Jansons 2010: 49). Information about the Latvian masquerade traditions from the Christian Church sources in the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century have been negative, which is analyzed in 30-ties of the 20th century by ethnologist Jānis Alberts Jansons in his work "The Latvian mask parades”, but through a field study at the beginning of 21st century conclusion can be drawn that these traditions have been explicitly significant within the ru…

Mycotoxins in cereals and pulses harvested in Latvia by nanoLC-Orbitrap MS

2021

Twenty-seven mycotoxins in unprocessed cereals (n = 110) and pulses (n = 23) harvested in Latvia were analysed by nanoflow liquid chromatography combined with Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. One or more mycotoxins were found in 99% of the cereals and 78% of the pulses. Deoxynivalenol, zearalenone and T-2 and HT-2 toxins were prevalent in 9 to 86% of the cereals, mostly below their maximum levels as set by the European regulations. Non-regulated type A and B trichothecenes were prevalent in 5 to 87% of the cereals, at concentrations of 0.27–83 µg kg−1 and 1.7–4,781 µg kg−1, respectively. Quantification of emerging mycotoxins was also provided. Enniatins were detected in 94% of th…

Alvis Hermanis: “To Be Everything and Nothing at All”

2021

This chapter is about the oeuvre of Alvis Hermanis, a Latvian stage and opera director and artistic leader of New Riga Theatre. It focuses on the road Hermanis took from the 1990s, as a young and rebellious postmodern director, into the second decade of the twenty-first century. In such productions as Long Life (2003), Inspector General (2006), The Sound of Silence (2007) and Brodsky/Barishnikov (2015), he approaches psychological theatre on a new, innovative level, exploring it as a kind of time machine in order to study people and history. In 2013, Hermanis entered the world of opera. In his productions including Alois Zimmerman’s Die Soldaten (2013), Leos Janacek’s Jenufa (2014) and so o…

The Development of Territorial Cohesion Policies in Latvia

2011

Abstract This article examines how territorial cohesion policies have taken shape in Latvia in response to European debates on the subject. It argues that the conceptualization of territorial cohesion in Latvia is closely linked to the country's historical development path and primarily reflects national concerns with social cohesion. While Latvian national and regional level institutions rely on open processes of policy-making and stakeholder involvement, which were developed during the period of post-soviet transition when the country's planning system and regional policy approach were reformulated, the same open and consultative approach is not always evident during the drafting or consi…
