Rapid determination of baicalin and total baicalein content in Scutellariae radix by ATR-IR and NIR spectroscopy

2013

In this study methods for the quantification of baicalin and total baicalein in Scutellariae radix with near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and attenuated-total-reflectance mid-infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy in hyphenation with multivariate analysis were developed and compared. The reference analysis was performed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). Different pretreatments like standard normal variate (SNV), multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), first and second derivative Savitzky-Golay were applied on the spectra to optimize the calibrations. A principal component analysis was performed with both spectroscopic methods to distinguish wild …

Respiratory Effects of Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollutants During Exercise

2020

Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is increasing worldwide. Habitual physical activity is known to prevent cardiorespiratory diseases and mortality, but whether exposure to TRAP during exercise affects respiratory health is still uncertain. Exercise causes inflammatory changes in the airways, and its interaction with the effects of TRAP or ozone might be detrimental, for both athletes exercising outdoor and urban active commuters. In this Mini-Review, we summarize the literature on the effects of exposure to TRAP and/or ozone during exercise on lung function, respiratory symptoms, performance, and biomarkers. Ozone negatively affected pulmonary function after exercise, especially after co…

Rotenoids, Flavonoids, and Chalcones from the Root Bark of Millettia usaramensis.

2015

Five new compounds, 4-O-geranylisoliquiritigenin (1), 12-dihydrousararotenoid B (2), 12-dihydrousararotenoid C (3), 4'-O-geranyl-7-hydroxyflavanone (4), and 4'-O-geranyl-7-hydroxydihydroflavanol (5), along with 12 known natural products (6-17) were isolated from the CH2Cl2/MeOH (1:1) extract of the root bark of Millettia usaramensis ssp. usaramensis by chromatographic separation. The purified metabolites were identified by NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analyses, whereas their absolute configurations were established on the basis of chiroptical data and in some cases also by X-ray crystallography. The crude extract was moderately active (IC50 = 11.63 μg/mL) against the ER-negative…

Circulating hemocytes and pharyngeal explants of Styela clava release hemagglutinin in vitro

1997

Tunicate blood cells are a mixed population, thus experiments that assay their immunodefense responses, such as release of hemagglutinins, were done to isolate different functional hemocytic types. Two sources of hemocytes from Styela clava were used, the hemolymph and the pharynx (the hemopoietic organ). Hemolymph centrifuged through a discontinuous Percoll gradient yielded four distinct bands of hemocytes. After incubation at 15°C, circulating hemocytes and those from pharyngeal cultures released hemagglutinin after 2 and 30 days. Highest titers were found in B1 (hyaline and compartment cells), B3 (hyaline cells and eosinophil granulocytes), and B4 (hyaline cells and debris). Hemagglutina…
