Speciation of tetraalkyllead compounds by flow injection — atomic absorption spectrophotometry

1990

The on-line demetallation of alkyllead compounds, with iodine, and further emulsification, provides a fast determination of total lead content in liposoluble matrices, such as gasolines. It can be carried out in a double channel manifold, using a magnetically well stirred dilution chamber for the emulsification of the samples, previous to their analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. On the other hand, the different behaviour of tetraethyllead (TEL) and tetramethyllead (TML) can be employed for speciation of both compounds in the sample. The effect of the flow injection parameters on the sensitivity and accuracy has been studied and the figures of merit of the proposed method…

Effect of pruning-derived biochar on heavy metals removal and water dynamics

2014

Biomass-derived biochar is considered as a promising heavy metal adsorbent, due to abundance of polar functional groups, such as carboxylic, hydroxyl, and amino groups, which are available for heavy metal removal. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of an orchard pruning-derived biochar in removing some heavy metals (through the evaluation of isotherms) and to study water dynamics at the solid-liquid interface as affected by heavy metal adsorption (through an innovative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry approach). Both isotherms and NMR spectra revealed that Pb and Cr showed a good affinity for the biochar surface (Pb > Cr), while Cu was less affine. Accordi…

Distribution of Cr and Pb in artificial sea water and their sorption in marine sediments: an example from experimental mesocosms

2016

The uptake of two heavy metals (chromium and lead) in sediments in experimental mesocosms under exposure to different metal concentrations was evaluated by monitoring their concentrations over time both in seawater and in sediment. Two separate experiments under laboratory-controlled conditions were carried out for the two metals. Sediments were collected from a protected natural area characterized by low anthropic influence and were placed in mesocosms that were housed in aquaria each with seawater at a different metal concentration. At pre-established time intervals, seawater and sediment samples were collected from each mesocosm for chemical analyses. Quantification of chromium and lead …

Determination of heavy metal content and lipid profiles in mussel extracts from two sites on the moroccan atlantic coast and evaluation of their biol…

2012

Mussels may concentrate pollutants, with possibly significant side effects on human health. Therefore, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from two sites of the Moroccan Atlantic coast (Jorf Lasfar [JL], an industrial site, and Oualidia [OL], a vegetable-growing area), were subjected to biochemical analyses to quantify the presence of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, and Pb) and to establish the lipid profile: fatty acid, cholesterol, oxysterol, phytosterol and phospholipid content. In addition, mussel lipid extracts known to accumulate numerous toxic components were tested on murine pancreatic β-cells (MIN6), and their biological activities were measured with various flow cytometric and biochemical m…

Statistical characterisation of heavy metal contents inParacentrotus lividusfrom Mediterranean Sea

2014

This work focuses on the estimation of Hg, As, Cr, Ni, Cu, V, Cd and Pb by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in 135 adult specimens of Paracentrotus lividus collected in different coastal areas of Sicily (Gela, Punta Secca, Ragusa (RG), Siracusa, Priolo, Catania, Messina, Milazzo, Brolo and Filicudi), in order to monitor the Mediterranean marine ecosystem by use of sea urchin as bioindicator. Moreover, the paper deals with the statistical classification of the tested samples according to the sampling area based on metal concentrations. The descriptive statistics findings were obtained and, a starting multivariate matrix was built. Data-sets were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis test t…

Cadmium and lead in infant cereals — electrothermal-atomic absorption spectroscopic determination

1999

Because infant cereals are an important component of the infant diet from the fourth month of life onwards and therefore contribute to the dietetic intake of metals by infants, cadmium and lead were measured in samples of cereals commercially available in Spain. For this purpose an electrothermal atomic absorption (ET-AAS) method for determining cadmium and lead in these products was studied. The ET-AAS instrumental conditions and temperature/time furnace program were selected. The analytical parameters of the method (linearity, detection and quantification limits and precision) show its usefulness in measuring cadmium and lead in infant cereal products. The method was applied to eight diff…

3,4-trans-4-Aryl-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates—new group of potential cardiotonic drugs

2005

Abstract 3,4- trans -4-Aryl-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates 6 – 11 were prepared by a Michael reaction of N -acetonylpyridinium chloride with 3-aryl-2-cyanothioacrylamides or by a one-pot three-carbon condensation of N -acetonylpyridinium chloride, aromatic aldehyde and 2-cyanothioacetamide, and their cardiotonic properties were studied. 3,4- trans -5-cyano-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolate 8 was considered as a lead compound in this series since it in vitro experiments (spontaneously beating rat atria) showed a cardiotonic activity similar to that of milrinone 2 , however compound 8 induced activity at lover co…

Promoting Leadership Skills in Teachers with Coaching

2023

Today, the acquisition of additional skills by the teacher is a central fac tor in addressing contemporary changes in educational practices. Parallel to this, teaching profession requires an identity and practical teaching skills to improve the ability to help the younger generation in their self-realization. As a result, the teacher is no longer just a disseminator of knowledge, but a professional committed to consolidating his/her profile through paths of training and cultural growth, participation in experiences that intertwine teaching activity, with multi disciplinary design, educational research and ongoing training. Taking a closer look at how coaching can support teachers’ developme…

Crossing Boundaries: Why Physics Can Help Understand Economics

2019

Socio-economic systems can often successfully be treated as complex systems in the statistical physics sense. This means that the complexity resides in the emerging dynamical behaviour, not in a complicated composition. In order to understand why physics can help to understand socio-economic phenomena with complex behaviour in this sense, I argue that it is necessary to adopt a structural perspective. Accordingly, one has to modify the notion of mechanistic explanations, partly by broadening it. One crucial tool for finding mechanistic explanations in such a structural sense, are minimal models, i.e. models that abstract from micro details in a drastic way. I will show why mechanistic expla…
